On April 18—the International Day for Monuments and Sites, China Daily’s digital employee Yuanxi and Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes’ official virtual cartoon figure Jiayao together introduced an interactive digital platform that hosts a virtual copy of the Mogao Grottoes’ Library Cave(藏经洞) to the world.
The platform was developed jointly by the Dunhuang Academy and the Chinese tech firm Tencent. It uses gaming technologies to show the historical scenes of the Library Cave in the digital world.
The Library Cave in Mogao Grottoes was discovered in 1900, with more than 60,000 cultural relics dating from the 4th century to the 11th century unearthed. It was one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the 20th century.
On the platform, visitors can role-play and “time travel” to ancient dynasties and talk with eight historical figures. The public can enter the platform through the Digital Dunhuang website and its WeChat mini program.
In the digital age, the model of “culture+technology” has been introduced to promote the development of Chinese culture. The digitalization rate of China’s precious cultural relics is now over 70 percent, according to the 2022 China Digital Collection Industry Research Report released by iResearch.
Institutions such as the Palace Museum have also started online digital services of their own. Artificial intelligence (AI) technology allows the public to view the interior of the buildings through the Palace Museum’s WeChat mini program.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has also encouraged the development and transformation of cultural intellectual property(知识产权) by digital means. China Central Television has created a series of digital collections with different Dunhuang themes, such as the Dunhuang divine deer(神鹿) Youyou. It was created based on the image of the nine-colored deer from Dunhuang murals(壁画). The public can see the divine deer on CCTV’s own digital platform.
Digital collections cater to the consumption habits of young people, who grow up in the information age. They not only protect the intellectual property of the collections but also bring the public closer to China’s “excellent traditional culture”, noted Dunhuang Art Institute.
Su Bomin, director of the Dunhuang Academy, told Xinhua that more efforts will be made to explore new forms for showing cultural relics and offer the public greater cultural experiences to develop Dunhuang culture.

Be My Eyes, which went live in 2015, establishes a direct video connection between visually impaired users and sighted volunteers. The assumption is simple: Many people who are blind don't need any actual assistance in completing their daily tasks, but merely need a little help.
A sighted volunteer might be asked to help identify which of two cans contains tomatoes. In this case, the visually impaired user can cook a meal just fine on his/her own- -all he/she needs is a quick confirmation that he/she has the correct can. The model appears to be working; more than 540.000 volunteers and nearly 40.000 people with low vision are registered on the app.
“An elderly woman can now help a visually impaired technician set up his computer.” says founder Hans Wiberg, who has very low vision. “She doesn't need to know a thing about computers. She only needs to read what is presented on the screen. Then he can do the rest. ”
Early assistive technology centered on dedicated devices(专用设备), because of the niche market(小众市场) , which sold for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. But the Smartphone, multipurpose and near-universal, has completely changed the economy of scale. “There are larger market forces driving high-powered computation, high-quality engineering and high-quality battery management in the smartphone market than those in a specialty product.” says Aaron Stcinfeld, a research professor at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.
“The reality is most sighted people don't know somebody who is bind.” Becker says.” They think the solutions that a blind person needs are far more expansive. It turns out they need to be. “I think these apps are enabling sighted people to see that blind people just need some simple clues to help them do any number of things in their lives.”
1. What is the first paragraph used for in the text?A.Giving one example. | B.Showing the main idea. |
C.Making a conclusion. | D.Introducing the topic. |
A.By creating a video link between the visually disabled and sighted volunteers. |
B.By recognizing which of two cans has tomatoes that can be cooked. |
C.By establishing high-quality engineering and computation. |
D.By flashing the everyday tasks of the technician and volunteers. |
A.Slight assistance can help the blind free from some troubles. |
B.Volunteers should be very familiar with high-tech computers. |
C.Only people with low vision are registered to use the app. |
D.Joann Becker thinks it hard to find a bus stop using Be My Eyes. |
A.The smartphone becomes a special app. |
B.Fine devices have changed the economy. |
C.Cost matters when it comes to assistive technology. |
D.Smartphone market has great economic potential. |

Now I know what most of you might be thinking: That’s ridiculous. Only crappy(糟糕的)parents rely on the screen to care for their kids. Then again, experts suggest parents limit media use. And while I do not doubt experts, there are things they fail to consider.
Like most 6-year-olds, my daughter gets worked up and excited easily and watching a cartoon gives her a chance to shut off her mind. And there are other reasons— more selfish reasons. I am a work-from-work mom, and giving her screen time gives me “me”time. I’m able to write while she watches TV. And while this may sound bad, I believe I am helping my daughter realize she should rely on herself. When Mommy works, she gets her own snacks, drinks and toys.
There are other benefits, too. TV has also taught my daughter. Thanks to “super Why”,she knew her alphabet at 2, and thanks to “Sesame Street”, she was able to count to 20 by age 3. And I use the screen as a great incentive. My daughter earns “tablet time” when she completes tasks, e.g., making her bed earns 15minutes while doing her homework gets her 30.
Of course, I have a few rules. During meals, the TV is off; all programs must be supervised; on weekdays, she is limited to two hours maximum. So remember: It doesn’t matter what our kids watch; it matters what they do, what they say, what they feel and how they act, and only you know what is best for them.

Instead of attending virtual school from 8 am to 3 pm as usual, dozens of students at Kensington High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (KCAPA) declined to participate in classes.
Leilani Ferrara and her classmates didn't want to shirk work. “In fact, the logoff was designed to catch up on missed or incomplete assignments, and organized around the fact that the current school schedule is unworkable,” said Ferrara, 15, a strong student whose grades are now falling.
“We are all breaking down every day,” Ferrara said. “I barely eat. I'm sleeping all the time. You just can’t be online every day from 8 am to 3 pm. It's too much.”
Philadelphia School District students have not seen the inside of their classrooms since March when schools closed because of COVID-19. Social studies teacher Ismael Jimenez has seen students grow increasingly stressed. They worry about too much work, not enough time to complete it and a lack of one-on-one time with teachers.
KCAPA attendance has been declining — last week, it was under 50 percent. KCAPA students are expected to be in classes for seven hours, with 10 minutes between classes and a lunch break. The students have taken their concerns to Principal Patricia McDermott-Fair, who has not made meaningful changes to the schedule.
District leaders did not make McDermott-Fair available for comment. In a statement, Malika Savoy-Brooks, the district's Chief of Academic Support, said she understood remote learning is challenging for some. “We encourage anyone who has concerns about this matter to work with their school leaders with the final goal of creating an environment where students, progress comes first,” Savoy-Brooks said.
Students say they're overwhelmed (压垮的) by hours of work followed by homework. Junior Kayla Reynolds, 18, wants to finish high school. But now she's getting mostly Ds and Fs. “I'm not a good learner when it comes to virtual — I'm not slow, but I just need face-to-face learning,” she said. “Some of us are thinking about dropping out of school.”

The 30 finalists in this year's competition traveled to Washington, D. C. and also showed off their research projects.
Sharanya Chudgar, 14 years old, is one of the finalists in the competition and built a trash-collecting robot. The wheeled machine of the robot uses sensors to spot litter and a pan to pick it up. The robot's metal-detecting sensor helps it sort garbage from recyclables. And a light sensor can let the robot's solar panel angle itself toward the sun, collecting as much energy as possible.
Sharanya got the idea to build her trash collector by participating in litter cleanups. "When I signed up to volunteer at our local trash cleanup, I saw how much litter poliution there was and I knew that I had to fix this problem," Sharanya says. "People do have very limited time and resources, right? But robots don't. So it was then that my project idea formed in my head."
"Building the robot is my favorite part of this project," Sharanya says. "Ever since first grade, I've loved building Legos and building my robot felt just like building a Lego. But this project was a completely new experience since I hadn't ever had any experience in robotics before. Throughout the project, I had to use tons of power tools and I even had to cut pieces of metal to certain lengths. Whenever I needed to use a power tool, I had to turn to my dad who was always there to help out if necessary."
"It might seem difficult at times, but sticking to this and changing just one variable at a time gets you the best results," Sharanya says. This middle school scientist is solving global problems of litter pollution. For some, a science project might be an assignment or a fun hobby. But for Sharanya, doing research can also be a chance to help others and make the world a better place.

The material’s inventors say it has a number of possible uses and some day could provide a more environmentally friendly alternative(可替代的) to plastic. The material, made from shrimp shells and proteins produced from silk, is called “shrilk”. It is thin, clear, flexible(柔韧性的) and strong.
A major benefit of the material is its biodegradability. Plastic’s toughness and flexibility represented a revolution in materials science during the 1950s and 1960s. Decades later, however, plastic’s durability(耐用性) is raising questions about how appropriate it is for one-time products such as plastic bags, or short-lived consumer goods, used in the home for a few years and then cast into a landfill where they will degrade for centuries. What is the point of making something that lasts 1,000 years?
Shrilk not only will degrade in a landfill, but its basic components are used as fertilizer, and so will enrich the soil. Shrilk has great potential, the inventors said. Materials from which it is made are plentiful in nature, found in everything ranging from shrimp shells, insect bodies to living plants. That makes shrilk low cost, and its mass production possible if it should be used for products demanding a lot of material.
Work on shrilk is continuing in the lab. The inventors said the material becomes flexible when wet, so they’re exploring ways to use it in wet environments. They’re also developing simpler production processes, which could be used for non-medical products, like for computer cases and other products inside the home. They’re even exploring combining it with other materials, like carbon fibers, to give it new properties.

The first, a World Natural Heritage, is composed of a series of migratory bird sanctuaries (候鸟保护地) along the coast of the Yellow Sea in Yancheng, East China’s Jiangsu Province. The second, the Liangzhu Archaeological Site in Hangzhou, East China’s Zhejiang Province, was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site.
China began the application process for the bird sanctuaries in 2017. It only took two years to successfully complete the process. The migratory bird sanctuaries are the central node of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway and many endangered species, especially threatened migratory birds including red-crowned cranes and flamingos, go there to hunt for food during the migration season. The birds usually take a month to finish their migration. At about 10 days into their migration, they must stop and find food in order to have the energy to continue their journey.
Compared to the short turnaround for the World Natural Heritage’s application, the Liangzhu application was far more complicated. The application team spent six years making their dream a reality. The site in Liangzhu is evidence of the existence of an early regional state in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River during the late Neolithic period in China, which helps fill in the gaps in the history of the rice-cultivating civilizations of China and East Asia more than 5000 years ago. The site was one of the 20th century’s most important archaeological discoveries in China.
With these two new additions, China now has 55 World Heritage sites, the highest number in the world. The successful application means greater responsibility and obligations (义务). Protecting these places is much more important and is our future work.

He holds a piece of camel leather, a sheet of paper with some drawings on it, and a small cutter. In front of him are a few bottles of paints that he will use to create jointed puppets(皮影人偶). Ozek, one of the most influential contemporary Turkish puppeteers, hopes to appeal to a younger audience and boost the culture of Turkish shadow theater.
“There might be around 50 people, more or less, who do shadow theater in Turkey today, but only five or six of them are real professionals who are completely devoted to it," says Ozek while he works on a figure of Karagoz, the most famous figure in Turkish shadow theater---so famous is the character that the art itself is often called Karagoz.
To date, scholars have not been able to determine where this type of theater began to exist. Suggestions range from China to Central Asia, and from India to Byzantine Greece. Some scholars have focused on Bursa, the first capital city of the Ottoman Empire(奥斯曼帝国), and believe that the two main characters, Hacivat and Karagoz, were real people who lived in that city at the time. The two men were construction workers who often told jokes to amuse their co-workers, resulting in delays in the completion of their work. In the end, they were sentenced to death. However, the people of Bursa missed them so much that they began to tell their stories in the form of puppetry.
Ozek wants to open a Karagoz museum in his city in order to keep this art alive. He’s also developing new characters to catch the attention of children. "We first try to attract them with modern characters that they know, and while they’re watching, suddenly we bring out Karagoz," Ozek says. "We introduce him to them once again. When they watch it, they are satisfied, and we are happy as well. And like that, Karagoz survives in a way."

Shaolin Wushu (Shaolin Martial Art) is one of the most influential types of Chinese martial art, and it’s named after the Shaolin Temple located in Dengfeng County, Henan Province. The monks in the Shaolin Temple began to study martial art during the Southern and Northern Dynasties and this tradition was popular during the Sui and the Tang dynasties (581-907).
Shaolin Wushu is famous both at home and abroad as a highly effective method of self-defense and health-building. Combining both external and internal, and “hard” and “soft” exercises, Shaolin Wushu involves various methods of fighting techniques, consisting of barehanded boxing and weaponry combat. The Shaolin boxing has compactly designed routines. Its movements are quick, powerful and flexible; both practical for defense and attack.
The most outstanding characteristic of Shaolin boxing is that the practitioner works on one straight line. It means that his movements of advancing, retreating, turning around, sideways, or jumping are restrained on one line. His arms are kept slightly bent so that he can stretch out to attack or withdraw freely for self defense. Another characteristic of Shaolin Wushu is to maintain the body in perfect balance, as stable as a mountain. The practitioners should keep a calm and peaceful mind but strike with great force and speed. He should be good at “borrowing” force from the opponent. That is, he should not meet the opponent’s strikes head-on, but take advantage of the striker’s force and go along with it to bring him to avoid a force of a thousand weights. The practitioner should know how to make false strikes and when striking, hit the vital parts of the opponent. The movements should be as skillful in physical movements as a cat, the shaking as a tiger, the moving as a dragon, the advancing as lightning and the yelling as thunder.
Shaolin Wushu is a very convenient sport, for the practice does not need a large space and is not affected by weather or the kind of weapons used.
There are many routines. External exercises include Minor Hong Boxing, Greater Hong Boxing, Old Hong Boxing, Chaoyang Boxing, Chang Boxing, Plum Blossom Boxing, Cannon Boxing, Luohan Buddha Boxing, Tongbei Boxing, Seven-star Boxing, Dragon-out-of-the-sea Boxing and Shooting-star Boxing; for internal exercises there are Xingyi Boxing and Juji Boxing. Shaolin boxing can be practiced singly or in pairs. The double routines include: Banshou Liuhe Boxing, Yaoshou Liuhe Boxing and Kick and Strike Liuhe Boxing.
