Martín Ramírez from Argentina

I think it is okay for scientists to grow genetically-engineer food because they can develop better food and this can help with the hunger problem all around the world. Scientists can help us to have more and better meats to eat by cloning only the superior animals. I don’t think that we should worry so much about genetically-engineered food.

Angela Fernandez from Mexico

I don’t know whether the tomatoes we find in supermarkets are genetically manipulated or not. What I do know is that they are very bad! A tomato grown with sun and soil is much better. In the case of strawberries, actually, most strawberries we can find are very tasty. I guess, however, they have been genetically manipulated, too.

Vera Sorokina from Russia

If we manipulate vegetable genes, we can also do with human genes. So, it may be possible that a substance which is left in food could get into a human body while the person is eating. Then, is it possible that this substance could modify the person’s genetic structure?

Pinar Müfftler from Turkey

I don’t agree with the idea that scientists should not grow genetically-engineered food because it is not safe. If they want to make progress, they should do experiments. It’s important to keep trying. If they don’t keep trying, they will never be able to develop new technologies. Maybe these technologies won’t be successful in the beginning, but if scientists keep trying, they will develop new ways.

A.developing such food is a better way to solve world hunger
B.experimenting on such food shouldn’t be allowed
C.new technologies will make such food safer to eat
D.this kind of food is much better and tastier
3. What do we infer about Martín Ramírez?

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍的是2022年卡塔尔世界杯虽然没有中国足球队出征,但是中国元素以及中国产品随处可见。

【推荐1】At the Qatar 2022 World Cup, is there a Chinese soccer team? No. But one can’t miss Chinese elements (元素) in and around the stadiums in this desert state. One can take a nap in a “mobile hotel” built by Chinese engineers, drink water from ponds dug by Chinese engineers, charge one’s mobile phone with electricity produced at the photovoltaic (光电的) power stations built by Chinese companies, and take a bus made in China to move between hotels and stadiums.

Did we forget something? Yes, even some stadiums are built by Chinese companies, while the souvenirs (纪念品) one can buy there, too, are made in China.

That’s how China has taken part in this World Cup and earlier events, and may do so in the upcoming ones too: by providing products and services to the athletes and audiences alike, thus impressing the world with its technology and products.

While “Made in China” has left its stamp on earlier soccer World Cups and other sports events, what makes the Qatar World Cup unique is the kind of technology China is providing. For example, the Stadium 974, built by Chinese companies, is the first movable and redeployable (可重构体系的) “green stadium”. It can recycle rainwater for future use and turn the garbage collected from the stadium into fertilizer (肥料). Besides, China has built an 800 MW photovoltaic station that continually turns the rich sunshine in the Middle East into electricity for the stadium.

Another reason that has made it possible for Chinese firms to perform well in the World Cup is that China has achieved good economic growth despite a global economic slowdown. While the whole world suffers because of the COVID-19 pandemic and other reasons, Chinese companies have largely continued to function normally.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了电影制作人是如何把恐龙变成现实的。

【推荐2】In all of the Jurassic Park movies, dinosaurs (恐龙) are the stars of the show. The way the dinosaurs look and move is amazing — they seem so real. But dinosaurs haven’t lived on our planet for the last 65 million years. So how do filmmakers bring them to life? They ask paleontologists (古生物学家) for help.

Paleontologist Tyler Lyson has been interested in dinosaurs since he was a child. He grew up in the countryside in the western United States and found his first dinosaur fossil (化石) when he was only six years old. Lyson says the best way to learn about dinosaurs is to look at fossils. Fossils and footprints help scientists understand how dinosaurs looked, moved, and lived.

Filmmakers use fossils and other research from paleontologists to build dinosaurs for their movies. But they also have to imagine. The dinosaur builders have to decide what color the dinosaurs are, what patterns (图案) the dinosaurs have, how long their tails are...

Another very important thing that helps bring dinosaurs to life is the computer. After dinosaur builders make dinosaur models, they put pictures of them into a computer, and then use CGI — computer-generated imagery (计算机生成影像) to make them move. Filmmakers have used CGI for all the dinosaurs in the Jurassic Park movies.

Paleontologists still have a lot of questions about dinosaurs. What did they sound like? How did they look for food? What did they eat? The answers to these questions will help filmmakers create even more realistic dinosaurs than ever before.

1. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.The Jurassic Park movies.B.Paleontologists.
C.The last 65 million years.D.Dinosaurs.
2. What does Lyson think is the best way to learn about dinosaurs?
A.Reading books.B.Looking at fossils.
C.Watching movies.D.Going to the countryside.
3. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.Why CGI is popular.B.Why filmmakers build dinosaurs.
C.How dinosaur models are brought to life.D.What questions paleontologists still have.
4. What can we know from the passage?
A.Lyson’s interesting dinosaurs started young.
B.Some paleontologists also make dinosaur movies.
C.Dinosaurs appeared on our planet 65 million years ago.
D.Paleontologists already know what dinosaurs sounded like.

3】An American company has developed a new technique (技术) to make bread stay fresh for 60 days.

Scientists found that a kind of mould (霉菌) caused bread to go bad. The new technique kills the mould and keeps the food for longer time. This means there will be less waste of food in the world in future.

Food waste is a big problem in most developed countries. In the US, an average (普通的) family throws away 40% of the food they buy, which adds up to $165bn every year, about 330 million tons in weight. Bread takes a larger part. In the UK, 32% of the bread they buy is thrown away as waste when they can still be eaten.

The bread usually goes mouldy (发的) in around 10 days, but the American company says the new technique will keep the bread free from mould for two months.

”We treated a piece of bread in a special machine. At 60 days it had the same amount of mould as it was first made,“ says Mr. Stull, the leader of the company.

Although there are a lot of bread makers interested in the new technique, few customers like the idea. They say they don’t think a piece of bread which lasts for 60 days tastes good.

”We’ll have to make our customers accept the idea. But it will take some time,“ says Mr. Stull.

1. What is the key point of the new technique?
A.It can prevent the world from wasting food.
B.It kills the mould and keeps bread fresh for longer time.
C.It keeps the same amount of mould.
D.It makes bread taste good.
2. How much of the bread is wasted in the UK?
A.Nearly half.B.A quarter.C.More than half.D.About one-third.
3. What can we know from the passage?
A.Food waste can be reduced immediately (立刻) with the new technique.
B.We will buy bread that can last longer.
C.Few customers are sure about the technique.
D.Poor countries are in great need of food.
4. What is mainly talked about in the passage?
A.A new technique has been invented to keep bread fresh longer.
B.There is great waste of food in developed countries.
C.There is a kind of mould that causes food to go bad.
D.Customers don’t like food that lasts for two months.
