There’s just a 1-in-3,700,000 chance that a person will be killed by     1     shark, but the fear is still enough to have swimmers worrying about     2     (be) seen as prey (捕获物). Now, new research supports the long-standing theory     3     when great whites go in for a bite, it’s a case of “mistaken identity”.

A team of biologists     4     (compare) videos of seals swimming with those of humans swimming. They then edited the clips to simulate a great white’s vision and found that from the ocean inhabitant’s point     5     view, humans do indeed have a strong resemblance to seals.

“Usually, great white sharks     6     (regard) as ‘mindless killers’ and fond of human flesh. However, this does not seem to be the case; we just look like     7     (they) food,” Laura Ryan, lead author of the study, told Live Science.

“They eat seals every day and bites on people are     8     (extreme) rare,” said Catherine MacDonald, a marine scientist at the University of Miami. “So if they’re not solving the problem visually, then how do we think they’re solving it?     9     (hit) the right targets, sharks could be relying on other senses, like the scent. If that’s the case,     10     (addition) studies on how great whites use those senses could help prevent further attacks.”

Scientists: Hungry Polar Bears Eating Food Waste to Survive

Scientists from the U.S. and Canada say Arctic warming is reducing the food supply for polar bears. The animals are forced     1    (search) for food at waste sites. That is causing problems for     2    the bears and humans.

With the usual food running low, the bears are coming off the ice and onto land. They get    3    (close) to areas where humans place waste, including bones from whale hunts and used food packages.

The bears often end up     4    (eat) the food packaging when trying to get to the food inside. Since their bodies cannot break down the material, the bears can develop blockages that can result     5     sickness and even death. In     6    (add), people living close to the area     7    (occasional) shoot the bears because they fear the animals might hurt people.

Up to now the bears     8    (find) at garbage collection places in Russia and in the American state of Alaska. The problem will only get worse for the bears as more humans move into their territory. One area where the bears live is Nunavut, Canada. The human population there    9    (expect) to increase by over 50 percent by 2043.

As more humans move in, the waste becomes more of a problem because it is hard to manage in frozen lands. The ground is frozen,    10    means the garbage cannot be buried. It is costly to send the waste out on trucks.

Living Jewels

Before I went to the British Koi Keepers Annual Show, I didn’t understand     1     people could take fish so seriously. However, the more I learned about koi, the more interested became. As one expert told me, "Collecting koi is far more addictive than you might think. They’re as beautiful as butterflies and very calming to watch." Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen, would have agreed the pool in his specially-built Japanese garden was home to 89 koi,    2     cost up to $10,000 each.

At the show I met koi enthusiast Jean Kelly. “Koi are getting more and more expensive,” she told me. “One recently sold for $250,000.” I was shocked that's almost as much as I paid for my house. Well, that was a record,    3    (admit) Jean. The normal price is nowhere near as high as that.

Nevertheless, serious collectors can pay up to $15,000 for a fully     4    (grow) koi, which is nearly as expensive as a new luxurious car, and the bigger they are, the more they cost. The cheapest I     5     find was $75 each, but they were only about twice as big as my goldfish.

Jean wasn’t impressed by one of the koi on sale either. “Actually, these koi aren’t any nicer than     6    ,” she commented. “    7     they are slightly bigger than the ones I’ve got, I paid considerable less than this.”

I wasn’t quite as enthusiastic as Jean, but I did consider    8    (buy) one. Then I remembered that all but 5 of Freddie Mercury's koi died when someone accidentally turned off the electricity supply to their pool. Jean assured me that with all the new equipment available the survival rate was getting better and better, and that looking     9    koi was no harder than taking care of any other pet. However, in the end I decided to stick with my goldfish. They’re not nearly as beautiful as koi ——but they’re a great deal cheaper     10    (replace) !
