Every fall, my family and I would mark dead trees, cut them down, haul (拉拽)the wood and store it in the basement. On Christmas eve, the basement was half full of dry wood.As usual, my sister Shelly and I were home from school, and she did as either of us had done a thousand times before: checked the stove in the hall, tossed a few more logs and slammed the stove door shut.

My ten-year-old self loved summertime. The best part of summer was the community pool. Everyone was there.

The second man fumbled with his hands as he stood behind his friend. I realized the second man was mentally deficient. I held my tears as I stood there with them.

The very next practice he presented me with a T-shirt made out of a black garbage bag. “Put it on,” he said, pointing out the holes for my head and arms. “Start running around the practice field.” “Koop going, Fireplug (消防栓),” other players would shout. “Fireplug” was the new name they gave me. Although no one ever explained it to me, I figured it had something to do with me being shaped like it.
Every day in practice, I had to run in that stupid garbage bag. My short fat legs weren’t exactly comfortable, and often I’d trip and fall. The other players would laugh. At that moment, I asked myself, “Why? Was I being punished for something? In fact, I wasn’t prepared for the answer. Later, I knew that her mother, who worked in a supermarket, was in poor health. She constantly stayed at home with no income. I didn’t know what to do. So I did the most obvious thing. I went home and told my mom that my lunch wasn’t enough and I still felt hungry after eating it. My mom started packing a bigger lunch. And in school, I’d tell Kate that my mom had packed me a lunch too big, so could she please help me finish it? Then I asked her what her favorite dish was. “Naan,” she whispered.

He stood the paper up against a backing, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. Only his head would move. He would visit her whenever he could and paint for her. All the while he would tell her, “See, you can do anything you set your mind to,”
