When Kevin Durant gave his tearful MVP speech m 2014, the NBA star made sure to thank one person who had been there with him from the very beginning: his mother. His heartfelt words about the sacrifices she made for Durant and his brother led to a lifetime movie about her journey as a single parent, The Real MVP: The Wanda Durant Story.
Today, the NBA superstar’s mom travels the country as a motivational speaker and philanthropist (慈善家). On Monday, she spoke at Thomson Reuters’ in New York about her personal struggles to achieve financial stability and shared the financial advice she gave her son when he entered the league with CNBC.
“I wanted him to realize he has worked hard,” she says, “And it is OK for him to enjoy himself because of his hard work. But it is also imperative that he prepares for his future.” While she advised him to enjoy the rewards of his labor, she also wanted to make sure that her son knew the importance of financial planning.
She told the audience that when she found herself a single parent to two children at 21, she couldn’t follow the financial principles. Rather than planning for the future, she focused only on how her money could make ends meet for that moment.
Recently, Durant has teamed up with Laurene Powell Jobs for a new philanthropic program called College Track which is aimed at helping disadvantaged kids attend college. As part of the program, Durant has committed to donating $10 million to his hometown’s public school system.
Durant’s mom says that in addition to his financial decisions, she is proud of his philanthropic work and his desire to help the community, “I thought giving back was always very important, and so we talked about that and he had seen that from us as a family and it’s one of the things that I taught him,’’ she says.

Seaman-Graves learned that the town’s reservoir could hold enough solar panels (面板) to power all city buildings. And that would save the city more than $500,000 each year.
Floating solar panel projects have seen quick growth as a new form of clean energy in the United States and Asia. Floating solar panels are sought after not just for their clean power, but also because they save water by preventing evaporation (蒸发).
A recent study found that more than 6,000 cities in 124 countries could potentially produce all of their electricity demand using floating solar panels. It also found that the panels could spare the cities enough water each year to fill 40 million Olympic-sized swimming pools.
The idea of floating solar panels is simple: attach panels on structures that float on water. The panels serve as a cover that reduces evaporation to nearly zero. The water keeps the panels cool. This permits them to produce power more effectively than land-based panels, which lose efficiency when they get too hot.
One of the floating solar farms in the U.S. is the 4.8-megawatt project in Healdsburg, California. It was built by the company Ciel & Terre, which has built 270 projects in 30 countries. Floating solar panels cost 10 to 15 percent more than land solar ones at first. But the technology saves money in the long term. Deeper water can increase setup costs, and the technology cannot operate on fast-moving water, on the open ocean or on coastlines with very large waves.
Problems can come up if the solar panels cover too much of a water body’s surface. That could change the water temperature and harm underwater life. But Seaman-Graves said he believes his town’s floating solar panel project can serve as an example for other American cities.

In the next 26 seconds, the man was knocked down twice more before the referee pronounced his opponent victorious.
The defeated fighter, Ma Baoguo, is a traditional martial arts practitioner who claims to be a "master of Hunyuan tai chi". But when his skills were tested in May, he was knocked out by an ordinary fighter.
Yet his popularity has risen after that failure as he delivered a short address to audiences via video and some of his words were picked out and spread on social networks and he has become something of a social media sensation.
Just by wearing traditional clothes and giving the discipline, Ma came up with a name. Actually, Ma is far from being a traditional martial arts "master". On the contrary, he is harming traditional martial arts. Not surprisingly, it took just one punch from an amateur to knock the mask off. He blamed his younger competitor for lacking the martial arts virtues, but he is the one that lacks them.
Some people say this is not a problem because people can tell what sort of person Ma is and just treat him like a clown. But it is a problem because others seek to profit from it.
Worse than his own deeds are what has happened around him. Obviously, there are some who seek commercial profit. Young people who are not mature enough to distinguish right from wrong might really worship Ma as a "master". That's something we must warn people to pay attention to.
1. How many times was Ma Baoguo knocked down by his competitor?A.Just one. | B.Two times. | C.Three times. | D.Many times. |

31-year-old Su made history in the Tokyo Olympics by setting the new Asian record for men’s 100mat 9.83 seconds in the semifinal and finishing sixth in the final at 9.98 seconds. There used to be the biased view that no Asian sprinter can finish 100m within 10 seconds. Su proved people wrong with his performance. “I never thought we couldn’t do it, but there have been some problems with our concept of training the whole time. Now we did it by finishing at 9.83 seconds. That’s best proof to beat such prejudice,” said Su to CNS.
Su Bingtian of China celebrates after finishing men’s 100msemifinal at 9.83 seconds in the Tokyo Olympics at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, Japan, August I, 2021./CFP
Su believes scientific training plays a key role in his success. “I realized that running as much as possible does not necessarily help you run faster. Scientific training attaches more importance to applying of technique and requires you to do it right instead of doing it a lot. In that way, athletes can save more strength in training and recover faster,” said Su.
According to Su, he did not understand some of the moves coaches asked him to do when he went to train abroad at the beginning. It took him years to realize the importance of scientific training, especially stamina allocation (耐力分配), as well as how to do it on the field. “That’s why I chose to change how I started off at the end of 2014 and acquired a new running pace,” said Su.
Su and his American coach Randy Huntington began to cooperate in 2017. Huntington made detailed analysis of Su’s condition based on “champion model” from the start before arranging specific training sessions for Su to work on. Su said that played a key role in the process of him making breakthrough.
When asked if there will be another “Su Bingtian” in the future, Su’s answer was “Yes, 100 percent.” “People in the future can definitely do what I can do. I’m looking forward to seeing if they can do it better than me. All records are to be broken,” said Su.

Although it was frustrating for the youngster, she was not deterred. She continued to work hard and develop her skills to prove she could compete with the boys.
It didn’t take long for her to make a name for herself. In 1984, she became the first girl to play in the famed Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament.

He always sat alone at the lunch table with his phone listening to music. People just walked past him without caring. And in class whenever he was asked a question, he would take a long time to answer it. The whole class would get annoyed and whenever he got an answer wrong, the whole class would laugh. I didn’t know why but I didn’t care enough to know.
On Nov. 17, I walked into band class and was ready to play my flute. Mr. Kohler began the class. We played music for a little while then he asked us to tune our instruments. I saw Nathan. He was just walking around like usual looking for something. There is nothing surprising about that; he does that in every class. He doesn’t just sit the whole class period. He walks around looking for a tissue or anew reed (簧片) for his instrument. He plays clarinet (单簧管) by the way.
So then Mr. Kohler asked the class to tell what note it was just by hearing the pitch (音高). Nobody raised their hand except for Nathan. The moment I saw him, I laughed but not out loud. I thought he couldn’t do anything properly. How could he possibly guess the note when the pitch is played? But he could. He guessed every pitch right, even when Mr. Kohler played 2 and 3 pitches at the same time.
At that moment I got goosebumps (起鸡皮疙瘩). How did he do that? That day I realized that I shouldn’t judge people based on the little things I see. I need to see the great things people can do.
From that day on I had a different opinion on Nathan. I forgot about all the things he was bad at and focused on the things he was good at. Whenever I saw him, I just said to myself, “That’s the guy who impressed me. That’s the guy who is musically talented.”

Hyun Jong was a 21-year-old South Korean student attending Pennsylvania State University. In 2001, after leaving the Halloween party in a club, she was dropped off at her apartment by her friends at 4:00 AM. This was the last anyone ever saw of her. A search was conducted of her apartment. There was no sign of any struggle, but many of her belongings were there, indicating that she had gone inside after being dropped off. But what happened to her afterward? Although some evidence indicated her death, her body has never been found.

On Halloween night in 1977, the parents of 19-month-old Nima Louise Carter placed their child inside her crib. The next morning, Nima’s parents were shocked to discover that she was missing. Since the windows were locked, it’s theorized that someone must have been hiding in the closet and took the child out of the house while her parents were asleep. The police took it as child abduction. A month later, a group of kids were playing in an abandoned house four blocks away. When they opened up the house’s refrigerator, they received a horrifying shock when the body of an infant came tumbling out. The child was identified as Nima Louise Carter, who died of suffocation(窒息).

The truck was originally bought by Genie’s father back when horses and carriages were still the main form of transportation. Genie said her father got it before he got her and he was pretty proud of this truck because he had farmed with horses. But sometimes horses were not quite up to farm work. For a farmer, going from horses to a new truck was a big deal in those days.
What’s so amazing about the old truck, though, is how well it’s preserved. And it amazingly still ran although the motor, the only part that isn’t original, was remade and replaced. It still has its original paint job, with just a little rust (锈迹). The same sideboards which once increased its room to load more grain are still in place. And the truck still has its documentation from July 1937. It is interesting to see that, at that time, it was titled using the engine number worthy to be seen in a museum.
After twenty years of working the fields, the truck was parked in a barn in 1957 after Genie’s mother replaced the tires during the hard time of World War Ⅱ. Her mother even had a hard time getting a tire for it. She hadn’t got angry very much, but she sure did that time. And it’s hardly seen the light of day since then, some 64 years ago.
Old vehicle owners will agree that this Ford truck is not only unique but also exceptional. This truck is not perfect. However, it’s original, and you can’t find original very often.
