The sun began to rise in the sky, bathing the farm in golden light.

The farmer went to the doghouse as usual, but today, it’s different, the puppies in the doghouse have grown up old enough for sell. He sighed, a small farm can not afford all of the cute little things, though they are cute enough to melt people’s hearts.

He painted a sign advertising the puppies and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his fence. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he decided to rest for a little while, just then he felt a slight pat on his waist. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy. “Mister,” he said, “I want to buy one of your puppies.” “Well,” said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat of the back of his neck “these puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money, I don’t think you can make such big decision by yourself.”

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer “I’ve got 89 cents. Is that enough at least to take a look?” “Sure,” smiled the farmer. A warm stream suddenly rushed through his heart. “You can have more than one look and play with them for a while for free before they find their owners. At your service any time.” And with that, he let out a whistle “Here Dolly!” he called. Out from the doghouse and down the ramp (斜坡) ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.

The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight. As the dogs made their way to the fence the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little fur ball appeared, this puppy noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then the little puppy began awkwardly wobbling (晃动、摇晃) toward the others, doing its best to catch up.

Most boys coming to our ranch (大牧场) were living around animals for the first time. Sent by educational systems, they were boys in trouble; they had no family, lacked love, often broke the rules, and were lonely. Our ranch created a “boy-horse communication program” for them, hoping to heal their broken spirits and help them behave well through their communication with horses. I was the program’s head.

15-year-old Martin was a new arrival. He appeared cold and easily angry and had no experience with horses. He seemed to consider a horse only a vehicle for speed and thrills. He always pushed his way to the front of the line every day, knocking down smaller children to get on the horse. And then he started moving fast. We tried to communicate with him, but he only cared about his excitement.

One morning, when I was upset about Martin’s behavior in my office, one worker told me that a female horse was ill. Then, I ran to its stable (马厩), and within an hour she was dead. We felt sad about her and also concerned about the young baby she had recently delivered (分娩). The baby horse’s first need was to be fed.

We prepared some milk in a bottle and offered it to her. But she wouldn’t accept the bottle. We had to put our hands in the milk and let her suck (吮吸) the milk off our fingers. It was a painfully slow method of feeding, but we had no choice if we wanted the baby horse to survive.

At that moment, Martin finished his daily riding and found us. Pushing his way through the crowd of kids who were watching us feed the baby horse, he got to the front, shouting, “I want to feed it!”

After I showed Martin how to do it, he put his hand in the milk and then put his fingers towards the horse’s mouth. When the baby horse closed her mouth around his fingers, Martin was surprised and drew back, shouting, “Hey, it bit me!” But knowing the little horse wanted more food, he immediately re-wet his hand.

And he gently put his fingers near her mouth.

As an only child, Nicole Renae often felt lonely in her youth. But all that changed when she turned ten. For her birthday, Renae’s grandmother surprised her with an adorable gray puppy named Chloe. From the very start, the two were inseparable. “She was my best friend,” Renae says. Every ounce of love Renae gave, the little dog returned ten times. “She was such a sweet dog,” Renae says. “She’d lick (舔) your face forever if you didn’t stop her.”Whenever she called her name, she jumped three times.

But when Renae was 14, her father got a new job that came with a demanding condition — he’d be working from home, and the house needed to be free of sound distractions. “Chloe liked making sounds,” Renae says. “I was just a kid, so I didn’t have any choice in the matter. I didn’t want to get rid of my dog. I just fet so sick and sad about it.” With no easier option, the family took Chloe to a pet shelter. Though they were optimistic that the dog would find a new home with people who loved her, they couldn’t know for sure. “I called the pet shelter to try to find out what happened to her,” Renae says, “but they couldn’t tell me anything. So I never knew.”

In time, Renae grew up, got married, and had a child of her own. But her family didn’t feel quite complete. Remembering the joy that having a dog had brought her as a kid, Renae wanted her daughter to experience the same. She had it in her mind that she would adopt a puppy, but then one day she saw a post on Facebook about a senior dog that needed a new home. The dog in the photograph looked a lot like Chloe — she was even named Chloe. In an instant it was decided — she would adopt this older dog.

Most of us never forget the person that was there for us in our darkest times. Apparently, penguins (企鹅) don’t either.

On a typical day, off the coast of a small Brazilian island, Joao Pereira was heading out fishing. He was disheartened to find that an oil leak had polluted the waters. Staring out at the oily waves, he decided it was not a good day to fish. But walking on the beach that day, he found a struggling penguin, covered in oil and starving

Joao took the penguin home, gently cleaned it and spent the next week nursing it back to health. He named it Dindim, a Portuguese word meaning “ice pop.” Dindim is a Magellanic penguin, a species known for living in the seas of South America, In order to breed (繁殖), they must return to Patagonia, 5,000 miles from Joao’s home.

After a week of rehabilitation (康复), Joao patiently took Dindim back to the ocean and taught it how to swim again. Soon enough, it was time for Dindim to return to life in the wild. Joao took Dindim out into the sea by boat and dropped it off to encourage it to swim back to its home. But when he was back to shore, he found the penguin waiting for him. Joao made two more attempts later, but each time the bird would just swim back to Joao’s home. It seemed that Dindim had already formed a family bond with his rescuer and wouldn’t leave.

Joao had no choice but to keep the little creature. The following months saw their getting closer. Dindim would follow behind Joao to fish on the coast joyfully. It also liked to lie on Joao’s lap, letting Joao give it showers, allowing Joao to feed it fish and to pick it up. Joao and his family enjoyed the company of Dindim. But deep inside Joao’s heart, he knew Dindim belonged to the wild. Gradually, the hot summer days saw Dindim change its coat with new feathers. Was it time to say goodbye?
