My great-grandmother Eileen is fierce, loyal and strong and a bit of a legend in her lifetime, which now stretches to 92 years. We’re not allowed to call her Gran, because it makes her feel old.

That summer, I lost my job and felt hopeless. One day, I visited her. She picked up a box. “There you go,” she said. “You are good at these things, aren’t you?” It was a new phone. Her current mobile was ancient. I was surprised it still worked.

“Yes, ”I said. “That’s why I ask you. Young people know more about such things than us oldies. You can take it home and get it all set up,” she went on. “Then, when you bring it back, you can show me how to use it, such as surfing the Internet, sending e-mails and so on.” She smiled so sweetly that I felt a surge of love for her.

I grabbed the box. Setting up the phone would be easy. It was teaching her how to use it that may prove challenging. The following day I headed back to my great-grandmother’s with the phone.

“Here’s your phone. All ready to use.” For the next hour, I was busy setting up her passcode and fingerprint recognition, which she said was like something out of James Bond.

She chose a picture for her screen and it was all going so well until I tried to show her how to swipe(滑动屏幕). “Swipe?” she asked. She was 92, I reminded myself. This had been tiring for her.

She pressed at the up arrow and got angry when nothing happened. When I finally got her to swipe, she didn’t put the right amount of pressure on and the menu slipped away. After what seemed like hours, she threw the phone on the sofa. “Take it away!” she howled. “I want my old phone back!”

I picked up the phone and was about to leave to give her time to cool down when I realized I didn’t want to go home when she was angry and upset.

It was commencement (毕业典礼) at our college. People were pouring into the hall as I entered it. Finding the choice seats in the center of the hall already taken, I pressed forward, looking to the right and left for a seat. Finally, I found one in the very front row.

Here a little girl moved along to make room for me, looking into my face with large gray eyes. Again and again I found my eyes turning to the rose-like face, and each time the gray eyes moved half-smiling to meet mine. Obviously , she was ready to make friends with me. And when, with a bright smile, she returned my dropped handkerchief, and I said “thank you”, we seemed good friends. “

Other persons now coming into the seats, crowded me quite close to the girl. Her face beamed with pleasure and pride as she said, “My brother is going to graduate. He’s going to deliver a speech. I’ ve brought these flowers to send to him”.

“That is my brother,” she went on, “that handsome one with brown wavy hair. There! He’s waving his hands now. You see him, don’t you?” “I see him,” I responded. “He’s a very good-looking brother.” She said with delight. “And he’s so good and studies so hard that he has an honor to speak.”

“His speech is a good one, and he says it beautifully. He has said it to me many times that I almost know it by heart,” the girl continued.

As the ceremony went on, my little friend became excited and restless. “Now, it’s his turn, “she said, turning to me with a face in which pride, delight and anxiety seemed equally mixed, She rose to her feet and tiptoed for a better view of her brother. By the way,her brother came up the steps and onto the stage, I also knew he was trembling. His face was pale and lips were blue as with a cold. I felt anxious that he might have been seized by stage fright. The little girl, too, seemed to realize things were not well with him.”

Better to Give than to Receive

When a special occasion arrives, a gift often finds its way to a doorstep or an office desk. But once in a while, a present arrives at an unexpected moment as a reminder that someone is thinking about us.

Wanda Anderson remembers such a gift.

The rosebushes were finally in full bloom that day. Seeing roses always brings to mind Wanda's childhood memories. To this young girl, those flowers were a luxury. "We never had money to buy extra things, so even a tired rose was something to cherish," Wanda said.

Nowadays, to have a backyard filled with many different roses is pure enjoyment. Wanda especially loves the very first blooms. Her husband, Dale, devotedly tends the roses and knows this little fact about his wife. So, on this particular morning, he picked the very first flowers of spring, fresh from the garden, just for Wanda.

But as Dale came back, he was met by a neighbor who had dropped by. As the woman turned to go, Dale graciously (有风度地)handed the roses to her. Even though their visitor insisted she didn't want to take them, she was repeatedly assured that the flowers were hers to keep.

“I told her I was happy for her to keep them, but I really wasn't," Wanda said, recalling the emotions she was feeling right then. Seeing her very precious first blooms go out of the door filled her with regret.

Throughout the rest of the morning, Wanda argued with herself, knowing logically it was “better to give than to receive. Nevertheless, she wished she could have kept the roses for herself.

Later that day, the couple just arrived at the post office, where they were about to park the car.

【推荐3】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was the night before Christmas and Rob was lying in bed, thinking about the next day. His family was poor, living entirely on the farm they ran, and most of the excitement of Christmas was in the turkey they had raised themselves and pumpkin pies his mother made. He rolled over to look at his old watch—it was two o'clock. Three hours later, his father would call him to get up, even if it was Christmas.

His father never talked about loving him—he had no time for such things. There was always so much to do on the farm. “Or, maybe, he just doesn’t love me,” Rob thought. He had a reason to think so. At 5 o'clock every morning, his father would call him to get up and help with the farm work. He had to go to the barn (畜棚) to hold the milking pails (挤奶桶) steadily when his father was milking the cows. He had to help put the tools in place and do the cleaning after the milking. He hated it that he had to do all these things at so early time.

He was not the only one awake at this night. He heard his parents whispering in the next room. “Mary, I hate to call Rob in the mornings. He’s growing so fast and he needs his sleep. If you could see how he sleeps when I go in to wake him up! I wish I could manage alone.”

“Well, you can’t, Adam.” His mother’s voice was gentle, “Besides, he isn’t a child anymore. It’s time he took his turn.”

“Yes,” his father said slowly. “But I do hate to wake him.”

When he heard these words, something in him spoke: his father loved him! He had never thought of that before, taking for granted the tie of their blood. Now that he knew his father loved him, he had to do something different on this Christmas. He did save and buy them each something every year, but he wished he had a better present for his father instead of the usual tie from the ten-cent store.
