When something goes wrong, it can be very satisfying to say, “Well, it’s so-and-so’s fault.” or “I know I’m late, but it’s not my fault; the car broke down.” It is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming (责怪) somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to improve the situation. This is the winner’s key to success.
Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your co-worker causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don’t rely on this person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of(不管) how your co-worker fails to do his job well.
This is what being a winner is all about — creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on “whose fault it is.” Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.

As I pulled to a stop, I noticed four leatherjacketed bikers. They were standing in the middle of the road with two on either side of the light. They looked rough and dangerous, but as I got closer I noticed each one was holding their helmet(头盔) in their hands. I rolled down my window as one came up to my car. “We are the Brother of the Wheel,” he said. “We are collecting money for Christmas Toy Drive for needy children.” As I pulled a dollar out of my wallet I looked past his beard and into his eyes. They shined with goodness and kindness that came right from his soul. I dropped the money in his helmet and waved to the other bikers as I drove off. My good mood had returned. My faith in mankind had been bolstered. And I remembered once again never to judge people by their appearance.
Our society often judges books by their covers but God reads what is written in our hearts and souls. Perhaps one day we will all learn to see the world through the same eyes. Perhaps one day we will realize that looks matter little and actions matter much.

I used to be proud of my southern origin. My own voice reflected my family’s past and present, all southern. While growing up, I began to realize outside of our region, southerners were often dismissed as uncultured and uneducated, ignorant and narrow-minded. In that awkward stage between teenager and adult, my accent was a symbol of everything I hated about my life in the rural South.
The process of getting rid of my accent began in high school with Gilmore Girls. After each episode, I’d stand before a mirror, practicing the characters’ lines in an effort to speak like a “normal” white upper-middle-class girl. Eventually, I was successful at breaking down my tongue and rebuilding it. Every time I was asked where I was from, I would say “near Memphis” or make an ambiguous statement about my country background.
Now I’m living in a big city with a respectable job downtown. Every step I walk from the train station to the office seems victorious. However, I’ve been pretending and I’m fed up with it. Occasionally my old self escapes from my lips when encouraged by an extra glass of whiskey, but I unconsciously go back to the safety of the unaccented minutes later, making me feel as if I’m a fraud — a girl who forgets where she comes from. Then gradually I’ve become kind of homesick that leads me to put on the old Highwomen record and dance around, singing with all the accents I’ve got left.
My grandmother used to tell me, “Girl, don’t you forget where you come from?” Memories are fading by time but this one has remained impressed on my mind. So, I decide to move back. I’m still searching for what it means to be southern, but now I’m doing it with all the “y’alls”, and “ain’ts” I’ve kept back for so long.

Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are. After that we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage.
We always tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse(配偶) gets his or her act together. When we get a nice car,and are able to go on a nice vacation when we retire. The truth is,there's no better time than right now. If not now, when? Our life will always be filled with challenges. It's best to admit this to ourselves and decide to be happy anyway.
One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred Souza. He said,“for a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin a real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served,a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.”
This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment that you have.
And remember that time waits for no one. So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school;until you get married, until you get divorced;until you have kids;until you retire;until you get a new car or home;until spring; until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy...
Happiness is a journey,not a destination. So,work like you don't need money,love like you've never been hurt,and dance like no one's watching.

“We’ve all been astonished at the number of applicants,” ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher told a news conference. “It’s a very strong expression of interest and enthusiasm that people have across Europe for space.”
In giving out the results of a new recruitment (招募) drive aimed at more astronaut diversity, the agency acknowledged Wednesday that it still has work to do on gender balance. Just 24% of the applicants were women, up from 15% at the last hiring drive in 2008. The hiring campaign didn’t specifically address ethnic diversity, but stressed the importance of “representing all parts of our society”. The agency received applications from all 25 member nations and associate members, though most came from traditional heavyweights France, Germany, Britain and Italy. ESA specifically sought out people with physical disabilities, for a first-of-its-kind effort to determine what adaptations would be necessary to space stations to accommodate them.
The competition is fierce. Just four to six people will be chosen as Europe’s next astronauts, with a reserve team of about 20. The candidates will undergo intensive screening over the next year, with a final decision expected in late 2022.
The European agency has sent only two women into space to date—Claudie Haignere and Samantha Cristoforetti—but wants that number to grow. While 5 419 women applied for the new ESA program, “the numbers also show there is more to be done to achieve gender balance in the space sector,” said David Parker, its director of human and robotic exploration. Globally, 65 of the more than 560 people who have explored space were women, most of them Americans.

Although the law requires that mining companies restore the mountaintops after the mining has been completed, the 1.5 million acres of mountains that have already been removed cannot be regrown, rebuilt, or replaced. The companies do secure the rock formations to prevent erosion and landslides, but their efforts cannot recreate the once-beautiful mountain landscape. Furthermore, while companies are usually cautious about securing the rock formations, they seem less interested in restoring the native plants. MTR operations clear enormous areas of forests; some experts estimate that over 2,000 square miles of forests in the Appalachian region will have been razed by mining companies by the end of this year. Instead of replanting the native trees and shrubs that have been cleared, many companies chose to plant cheap, fast-growing plants.
Environmental threats are not only created in preparing a mountaintop for mining, but they also continue once the coal has been extracted. After the explosion, the excess mountaintop——which miners refer to as “overburden”——is usually dumped into nearby valleys or streams. The overburden contains a variety of poisonous substances, including explosive residue, silica, and coal dust. Over 700 miles of streams in Appalachia have been polluted by this dumping. Although the mining companies have built structures known as “sludge dams” that are intended to contain the runoff, these dams may easily burst or leak, sending thousands of gallons of poisonous chemicals into drinking water.
While the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act, and other environmental protection bills can theoretically be enforced to protect Appalachia, local lawmakers have been unwilling to take action for fear of upsetting those who believe that the jobs created by MTR are vital to the community. However, instead of bringing jobs and prosperity to poor Appalachian communities, MTR companies actually bring destruction and poverty. MTR does not involve the amount of human labor required by traditional sub surface mining. Despite the poverty. MTR does not involve the amount of human labor required by traditional sub-surface mining. Despite the fact that coal production has increased between 1950 and 2004. the human labor force working in these mines has sharply decreased. In the 1950s, there were approximately 130,000 people employed by the mining companies; by 2004, that number had decreased to 16,00. Moreover, while the coal companies may make enormous profits from MTR, Appalachian communities located near the mines suffer increased rates of kidney cancer, brain cancer, lung cancer, chronic pulmonary disorders and vision problems.

Tagging (涂鸦) a train is often less about the art and more about the prize of marking something that involves risk and echoes the original graffiti writers, who blanketed subway trains, including the windows and scats inside, in the 1970s and 1980s.
”Modern graffiti began in Philadelphia in the 1960s. But it became an art form in New York City, says Eric Felisbret, author of “Graffiti New York”. “Graffiti benefited from the popularity of hip-hop globally,” says Mr Felisbret. “Out of all the elements of hip-hop, graffiti is by far the most rebellious. . . Back then, all graffiti was illegal.”
In 2020 the Metropolitan Transportation Authority(MTA), which runs the subway, spent 1. 2m on cleaning. By the end of May 2022 it had already spent 1. 1m. In all of 2021, 681 subway cars were “ruined”. This year more than 700 cars have been. More than one in ten subway cars had to be taken out of service for cleaning.
The recent spike in subway graffiti activity parallels the lifting of travel restrictions. The graffiti on trains usually gets cleaned or hidden quickly, so artists post images of their work on social media. Sharif Profit, who organizes the annual Graffiti Hall of Fame in Harlem, says he can always tell when the work is by someone from another country: “It is not on the same level.
Tagging on the subway is dangerous. The live third rail is lethal (致命的) and the tunnels are dark. Trains can appear with little warning, so trespassers (不法进入者) may have no way of avoiding them. Two French graffiti artists were killed by a train in Brooklyn in April.”As soon as I heard where the bodies were found, I knew they were taggers, says Mr Felisbret.
The MTA removes any tagged train so as to avoid encouraging other people. Passengers then have to wait longer. That was the case recently, says Richard Davey, head of the MTA’s New York City Transit system, when eight trains were ruined. The resulting delays affected thousands of commuters. “It’s our goal to make sure we don’t return to the 1970s,” he says, “whether it’s in our stations or on our cars.”
Graffiti on the subway began to die out in the late 1980s. One former graffiti writer said it is almost shocking to see tagging there now.

A.To give an introduction of New York tunnels. |
B.To emphasize the devotion of tagging artists. |
C.To demonstrate the risk of tagging underground. |
D.To show his sorry for the loss of tagging artists. |
A.It helps people better understand the world. |
B.It has brought inconvenience to commuters. |
C.Modern graffiti was at its peak in the 1970s. |

Childhood may certainly be fairly happy, but its greatest moments can’t compare with the joy of being an adult. Who ever asked a six-year-old for opinion? Children don’t have opinions, or if they do, nobody notices. Adults choose the clothes their children will wear, the books they will read and the friends they will play with. Mother and father are kind but complete dictators (独裁者). This is an adult world.
You must have heard these words about how happy it is to be a child. But which adult would honestly change places with a child? Every movement you make, every thought you think is observed by some adults. Remember how gentle pressure was given to you with words like “if you don’t do as I say, I will...” I’m sure you will never forget!
Even so, these are only part of child’s trouble. No matter how kind and loving parents may be, children often suffer from terrible and illogical fears since they can’t understand the world around them. They often have such fear in the dark or in the dreams. Adults can share their fears with other adults while children have to face their fears alone.
But the most painful part of childhood is a period when you begin to go out of it, the period when you go into adolescence. Teenagers start to be against their parents and this causes them unhappiness. There is a complete lack of self-confidence during this time. Adolescents pay much attention to their appearance and the impression they make on others. They feel shy, awkward and clumsy. Feelings are intense and hearts easily broken. Teenagers experience moments of great happiness or black despair. And through this period, adults seem to be unkind than ever.
What a happy time it is to grow up. Suddenly you get your balance; the world opens up before you. You are free to choose; you have your own place to live in and your own money to spend. You do not have to ask approval for everything you do. You are no longer laughed at or punished by heartless adults around you. And if sometimes you are laughed at, you know how to deal with it. You can simply tell other adults to go to hell: you are one yourself.
1. Based on the passage, the reason why childhood is not the happiest time is that ________.A.kids can’t get enough love from their parents |

A.The fears are terrible and illogical. |

B.They care about what others judge them. |
C.They feel shy, awkward and clumsy. |
D.They are more sensitive than ever. |
A.To further support the author’s argument. |
B.To encourage teenagers to quicken their pace to grow up. |
C.To offer some hope to teenagers. |
D.To set teenagers a target. |

Probably not at that time of night. Much more probably it is a close female friend calling to tell you that she is heartbroken because she has split up with her boyfriend again or perhaps simply that a good movie has just started on TV.
At a time when families are spread far and wide and marriages often end in divorce, friendships are becoming more and more important. Erika, a 32-year-old lawyer, is strengthened by her ten-year friendship with her married friend Jane. “I was very sick one night, so I called Jane at about 3:00 a.m. to talk about it,” she says. “She was very supportive and even came over to take me to the doctor’s.”
As American TV shows like Friends have become more popular, many of us are beginning to see the value of such friendships. TV shows like this tell us that our romantic relationships may not last, but we need to keep in touch with our close friends if we want to survive.
With Erika’s family 200 miles away, it is Jane who keeps a spare set of keys to Erika’s apartment and waters her plants whenever she is away. “Having Jane around gives me a certain amount of freedom. It is not the kind of thing that you could ask anyone to do, but she knows I would do the same for her.” Jane, who may move to a different city soon, is worried about leaving such a support system of friends. “My friends have more to do with my life than my parents and, therefore, I don’t have to spend a lot of time explaining things to them. Friends are more up to date with what is happening.”

At the same time, Wissam Raed,12, will be busy volunteering too. Thousands of miles away in Lebanon, Wissam plans to put on a play at an orphanage and bring potted plants to elderly people at a senior citizen center.
Some other children like Nathan White, 10, have personal reasons for volunteering. Nathan’s grandmother died of a heart attack. To help raise money for medical research, Nathan participated in Jump Rope for Heart. He and five other boys took turns jumping rope for two and half hours and collected more than US$1200 in donations for the American Heart Association.
Millions of children around the globe lend a hand to their communities every year. Schools and parents also contribute to the rise in youth service. For example, many schools offer community service activities for students to join. Teachers either combine volunteer work with classroom lessons or make service work a requirement. Parents, on the other hand, encourage their kids to volunteer and do it with them.
Community service is particularly important in this depression time. As the need for monetary support and other aid has increased, many charitable organizations have experienced a significant drop in donations. Camille and other children who volunteer thousands of hours annually can fill in some of the gaps.
According to research, kids who start volunteering are twice as likely to continue doing good deeds when they are adults. So, grab a paintbrush, a trash bag, or whatever you need to help your community. You’ll love how you feel after helping others. Even dirty work can be lots of fun, if it’s for a good cause.
