Two friends have an argument over small things that breaks up their friendship forever. Such sad events happen again and again in high schools. So why aren’t students taught to deal with conflict?
First of all students need to realize that conflict can not be avoided, but it doesn’t mean the happening of violence. However, a report shows that violence often happens between teenagers because of a small insult (侮辱). For example, when one student eats a sandwich each lunchtime, it may lead to someone else’s insult, because he or she was thought to be unwilling to try new things. In turn, it can lead to violence.
Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can stay calm. Feeling calmer, he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Insulting words only add fuel to the emotional fire. On the other hand soft words can put out the fire.
After both sides have calmed down, they can apply another key strategy for conflict management: listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen.
Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. Instead of finding out what’s wrong with the other side, they should concentrate on what the real problem is and what both sides are trying to achieve. For example, the student being insulted for a sandwich can ask themselves questions such as “What do I really want? What am I afraid of?” rather than get angry. As the real problem becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller.
There will always be conflict in schools. Learning to manage conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict management is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country.

Many classrooms are going green by adding solar panels(太阳能电池板) to their roofs. The solar panels collect energy from the sun and use it to power lights and computers.
The panels help create at least as much electricity(电力) as the classrooms use. They can also cut down the cost of energy.
Many new ““green” classrooms are built by using recycled things.
Green schools have other new ideas. Some classrooms are painted with special paint that helps improve indoor air quality(质量). Some use windows that help keep classrooms warm in cold weather and let in lots of natural daylight. Others no longer use glue that adds chemical(化学的) smells to the air.
Experts(专家) say that green classrooms are good for education. Studies show that the environment with good air can cut colds and flu by more than 50 percent. That means fewer sick days for students and teachers. Studies have also shown that natural light and other green features(特点) improve students’ learning and marks in tests, too.

Then when a child sits on the bench, it sends out a message to others that basically says, “ Hey, I’m alone right now and would welcome the company (陪伴) of others.” Kids in the playground see this and from their training, they see there is a fellow student in need. They are encouraged to come over and sit on the bench and make a new friend.
Benches like this have been around for a while now in many schools. But in Ireland, they are trying to do something different with them. This school in Cork in the south of Ireland is the 247th to get benches from a social organization called “Buddy Bench Ireland” that doesn’t just provide schools with benches, but also runs special projects with trained child psychiatrists (精神病专家).They use the bench as an opportunity to start conversations about mental health. They talk about the importance of knowing and understanding your feelings and those of others.
Judith Ashton, a co-founder of Buddy Bench Ireland said, “The children need to understand what the bench is about, what it represents ----friendship, understanding, listening to each other and the most important thing is that it’s important to express feelings.”
But do children really use the bench? It’s a matter of great public concern. Sinead Mcgilloway from Maynooth University carried out a study and said, “ We found that 40% of the children told us that they had actually used the benches at the time of the study. And over 90% said that they would talk to a child if that child was sitting on the bench. So, there’s nothing to worry about.
Children’s mental health and safety at school is increasingly a concern in many countries. In Ireland, they’re hoping these benches will not only tackle problems like school violence and school bullying (校园暴力和校园欺凌), but also give students the confidence to open up about their feelings.

Most dorm(宿舍) rooms are really small. Lack of the right way and failure to know how to maximize(最大限度地利用) space in a dorm room, you’ll have a hard time putting everything you need in your space.
●Use the storage space under your bed
Many students looking for more space to store their belongings will just put things under their beds. If you are like those students, consider getting more organized by using storage containers. They are effective in maximizing space at the same time.
●
If you are like most students who like to bring several pairs of shoes to college, you can get a shoe rack(架) which you can hang near your doorway. Most of those shoe racks can keep around 9 to 12 shoes at a time, saving you a lot of floor space. You can also get storage bins(储藏箱) which you can attach to your door.
●Keep things on your walls
Using a small area on the wall for a coat rack will allow for more space.

New York City public schools, for example, recently prevented ChatGPT access on school computers and networks, saying “concerns about negative influence on students learning, and concerns about the safety of content.” Schools in other cities, including Seattle, have also limited its use.
A US’ online course provider Study. com recently asked 1, 000 students over the age of 18 about the use of ChatGPT in the classroom. The responses were surprising. Around 89 percent said they’ve used it on homework. Over 50 percent said they used ChatGPT to write an essay, while 22 percent admitted to having asked ChatGPT for a paper outline.
While the chatbot (聊天机器人) is raising fears of academic cheating on schools, some educators believe introducing the Al-ended tools to the academics could even overturn the traditional education.
“For researchers, finding valuable scientific problems and solving them in creative ways come first, and then writing academic papers. Some AI-enabled writing tools can create words or even write long text based on a few keywords shortly,” said Zhu Wei, a law professor in China. For example, ChatGPT helps writers gather writing materials for their papers, which not only increases the efficiency of the work, but also allows researchers to devote more energy to more creative work.
“Whether to use ChatGPT depends on whether to use it correctly. For those students who just use it to deal with homework or exams,” Zhu said, “this is putting the cart before the horse, which should be limited.” To avoid this problem, Zhu suggested introducing soft wares to help educators. He believes schools should accept ChatGPT as a teaching aid to unlock creativity in students. “The most important part of such tools is not to replace human thinking, but to improve human thinking.” Zhu said.

For years, farmers have fought a losing battle with increasing number of monkeys. The animals invade farms in several northern Indian states, searching for food and destroying crops worth millions of dollars. Many have given up on farming because of the monkey problem. Officials estimate that 40 percent of the farmland in the area is unplanted.
Agriculture experts say switching to herbs will protect farmers’ crops and bring higher profits. Monkeys do not attack herbs with medicinal properties. Farmers can make more money as demand for herbsboostsfrom Indian companies making medicinal and personal care products. India's herbal product industry is worth $4 billion and growing quickly. Some farmers have already started planting herbs with help from the medicinal plants board.
Experts have listed about 100 herbs that can be grown on the empty farmland where villagers stopped growing crops. So far, nearly 4,000 farmers have switched to growing herbs in seven North Indian states. In Himachal Pradesh, the number is 300.
An expert says the most successful farmers have strong business sense and are willing to innovate. His organization also links farmers in distant villages with possible buyers to make sure they can market their crops.
Monkeys are also becoming problems in cities, including India's capital New Delhi. They are famous for stealing food and even mobile phones.
In December, experts gave lawmakers advice on dealing with monkeys often seen around parliament (议会) . The experts advised leaving the animals alone and not making eye contact. The monkey population has increased since India banned their export for biomedical research in 1978. But many in Hindu-majority India respect and feed the animals. They link the monkeys to the Hindu god Hanuman, who takes the form of a monkey.

The most immediate way in which organizations like UNHCR and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) can help these refugees is by setting up refugee camps. Refugee camps are designed to be temporary, but they often remain in place for decades. In some parts of the world, children have grown up and had children of their own without ever leaving their camp.
Critics argue that they force refugees to be entirely dependent on donations. One journalist who visited the Nyadeou camp in the south of the Republic of Guinea A (Africa) in 2001, described how normally peaceful people were reduced to fighting with each other when the food truck arrived.
Refugees camps can easily become dirty, overcrowded and are overrun with disease or crime. In many camps, drug dealers hide themselves among the majority of innocent refugees.
One alternative for refugees is to settle in a town or village, making them become part of the local population. This is known as the “self-settlement”. Several aid agencies argue that the self-settlement is a better option in many cases than refugee camps. They say that self-settled refugees can start to rebuild their lives straight away, and are freer and safer than refugees in camps. Oxfam, the ICRC and many other international aid agencies support programs in which refugees are helped to self-settle.
Representatives of UNHCR argue that refugee camps are the best way of saving the greatest possible numbers of lives. They point out that it is much easier to help people if they are all gathered in one place. This is certainly true of emergency relief, for example the distribution of food, water, shelters and medical supplies. It is also true that long-term aid programs, such as family tracing, orphan support and, perhaps most importantly, education, can all be carried out much more easily when refugees are all living together in one place.

Raise your hand if losing your computer would be a serious hindrance to your career, or if, at the very least, you’d lose a whole lot of important information. Yeah, us too. And yet we tend not to treat our computers with the care about this advantage; many of us are probably guilty of these things you’re doing that shorten your laptop’s life.
One of the directives you’ll commonly hear when it comes to computer upkeep (保养) is that you should shut down your computer properly by clicking the “Shut Down” button onscreen, rather than pressing and holding the “Power” button, so that it shuts down immediately. But when you click “Shut Down,” every program needs to close, and that can be time-consuming. How bad, really, is shutting your computer down with the power button?
“Shutting down a system properly is known as a ‘graceful shutdown’, which sends a signal to the respective operating system so that it can save its state before turning the hardware off,” a tech expert Damien Mason says. However, Mason adds that this forced shutdown can even be beneficial, in certain situations. “Hard shutdowns can be a saving grace when a system crashes or as a safety way to prevent hackers,” he says. But you still shouldn’t make a habit of doing it. Mason says that graceful shutdowns are still a preferred method, which avoids interrupting tasks conducted by the operating system and allows programs to properly save.
You should press the “Power” button carefully, but it’s not a death knell for your machine. There are plenty of other things you may be doing that are most likely worse. For instance, not shutting down your computer at all—or even only doing it rarely—can be far more damaging to it than a forced shutdown.

Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collection” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats. Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.
Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range. The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don't usually take care of the animals’ natural needs.
The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusual and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis. A world-wide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.
Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding (圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species (物种) dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?
Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals' natural habitats.
