Unlocking the Secrets of Your Night

Most people do not realize that dreams take up about 25% of the night’s sleep, and each dream period lasts from 5 to 20 minutes. There is no doubt that dreams play an important role in our lives. If they can be correctly     1     —and that is a big “if”—we can come to understand ourselves better. Here, we look at three common dreams and what they potentially symbolize.

Dream 1: I can see their laughing faces laughing at me. But they aren’t as smart. If they were, they’d be up here flying with me!

This dream has both positive and negative     2     . On the positive side, the dream may express a strong desire to travel and get away from everyday     3     . It may also symbolize a powerful desire to achieve. On the other hand, this dream can mean the person has a problem or is     4     of something and they wish to escape. The dream could represent feelings of inferiority, which the dreamer attempts to get rid of by literally and physically     5     themselves above others.

Dream 2: I’m moving fast now, but it’s still behind me. It doesn’t matter how fast I go. I still can’t escape.

Although this is a traditional symbol of health and     6     , it can suggest the dreamer is trying to escape from danger. Usually, fear is the dominant emotion. By     7     hard, the dreamer can possibly escape the threat. However, they can also stop moving. This makes the fear even more terrifying. One possible explanation is that the person is under pressure in their everyday life.

Dream 3: I’m sweating and my heart is beating. I’m trapped. Trapped in my own bed.

This symbol is associated with fear and embarrassment: suddenly the dreamer loses all power of movement. They try hard to move their arms and legs, but they simply cannot;     8     in’ a terrifying situation with no escape, they become more and more terrified as the seconds go by. Another frequent     9     for this dream is failing to do something in public, often something that you are normally very good at, such as your job. Not only is this extremely embarrassing, but it also shows a(n)     10     fear of losing a job and a livelihood.

Hoarding disorder is a persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them. A person with hoarding disorder experiences distress at the thought of getting rid of the items. Excessive accumulation of items, regardless of actual value,     1    .

Hoarding often creates such cramped living conditions that homes may be filled to capacity, with only narrow pathways     2     through stacks of clutter. Countertops, sinks, stoves, desks, stairways and     3     all other surfaces are usually piled with stuff. And when there's no more room inside, the clutter may spread to the garage, vehicles, yard and other storage facilities.

Hoarding ranges from mild to severe. In some cases, hoarding may not have much impact on your life, while in other cases it seriously affects your functioning on a daily basis.

People with hoarding disorder may not see it as a problem, making treatment challenging. But     4    treatment can help people with hoarding disorder understand how their beliefs and behaviors can be changed so that they can live safer, more enjoyable lives.

Getting and saving an excessive number of items, gradual buildup of clutter in living spaces and difficulty discarding things are usually the first signs and symptoms of hoarding disorder, which often     5     during the teenage to early adult years.

As the person grows older, he or she typically starts     6     things for which there is no immediate need or space. By middle age, symptoms are often severe and may be harder to treat.

Problems with hoarding gradually develop over time and tend to be a private behavior. Often, significant clutter has developed by the time it reaches the attention of others.

Excessive acquiring and refusing to discard items results in:

● Disorganized piles or stacks of items, such as newspapers, clothes, paperwork, books or     7     items

● Possessions that crowd and clutter your walking spaces and living areas and make the space unusable for the     8    purpose, such as not being able to cook in the kitchen or use the bathroom to bathe

● Buildup of food or trash to unusually excessive, unsanitary levels

● Significant distress or problems functioning or keeping yourself and others safe in your home

9    with others who try to reduce or remove clutter from your home

● Difficulty organizing items, sometimes losing important items in the clutter

Hoarding disorder is different from collecting. People who have collections, such as stamps or model cars,     10    search out specific items, categorize them and carefully display their collections. Although collections can be large, they aren't usually cluttered and they don't cause the distress and impairments that are part of hoarding disorder.

Can Indoor Plants Really Purify the Air?

Plants are very important to human life. Through photosynthesis (光合作用), they transform carbon dioxide into fresh oxygen. They are said to     1     toxins from the air we breathe — but is this true?

One famous NASA experiment, published in 1989, found that indoor plants can clean the air by removing cancer-causing pollutants like formaldehyde and benzene. Later research has found that soil micro-organisms in potted plants also play a part in cleaning indoor air.

Based on this research, some scientists say house plants are     2     air purifiers, and the bigger and leafier the plant, the better. “The amount of leaf surface area can     3     the rate of air purification,” says Bill Wolverton, a former NASA research scientist who conducted that 1989 plant study.

Other experts, however, say the     4     that plants can effectively accomplish this feat is far from conclusive.

“There are no definitive studies to show that having indoor plants can     5     increase the air quality in your home,” says Luz Claudio, a professor of environmental medicine and public health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. There’s no question that plants are capable of removing volatile chemical toxins from the air “under laboratory conditions,” according to Claudio. But in the real world — in your home or in your office space — the notion that putting a few plants together can     6     your air doesn’t have much hard science to back it up.

Most research efforts to date, including the NASA study, placed indoor plants in small, sealed environments in order to     7     how much air-purifying power they have. But those studies aren’t really     8     to what happens in a house, says Stanley Kays, a professor of horticulture at the University of Georgia.

In many cases, the air in your home     9     turns over — that is, exchanges places with outdoor air — once every hour. “In most instances, air exchange with the outside has a far greater effect on indoor air quality than plants,” Kays says.

Many people may be disappointed by what Kays said, but the professor also made it clear that he believes house plants are     10     — they are not only pleasant living companions, but also provide a number of health benefits. Studies have shown plants can knock out stress by calming the sympathetic nervous system, and can also make people feel happier. More research shows spending time around nature has a positive effect on a person’s mood and energy levels.

【推荐3】Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
A. classify B. contains C. detailed D. maintains E. multiply F. necessarily
G. passive H. relatively I. subject J. total   K. unusual

Can a precise word total ever be known? No, says Professor David Crystal, known chiefly for his research in English language studies and author of around 100 books on the     1    . “It’s like asking how many stars there are in the sky. It’s impossible to answer,” he said.

An easier question to answer, he     2    , is the size of the average person’s vocabulary. He suggests taking a sample of about 20 or 30 pages from a medium-sized dictionary, which     3     about 100,000 entries or 1,000 or 1,500 pages.

Tick off the ones you know and count them. Then     4     that by the number of pages and you will discover how many words you know. Most people vastly underestimate their     5    .

“Most people know half the words-about 50,000-easily. A reasonably educated person about 75,000 and a really cool, smart person well, maybe all of them but that is rather     6    . An ordinary person, one who has not been to university say, would know about 35,000 quite easily.”

The formula can be used to calculate the number of words a person uses, but a person’s active language will always be less than their     7    , the difference being about a third.

Prof Crystal says exposure to reading will obviously expand a person’s vocabulary but the level of a person’s education does not     8     decide things. “A person with a poor education perhaps may not be able to read or read much, but they will know words and may have a very     9     vocabulary about pop songs or motorbikes. I’ve met children that you could     10     as having a poor education and they knew hundreds of words about skateboards that you won’t find in a dictionary.”
