For centuries Lviv, located 50 kilometers from the Poland-Ukraine border, was an important stopping point on the main trade routes between the east and west. During the Renaissance, the city could afford Italy's finest architects because every merchant passing through was forced to stay and sell their goods for at least two weeks. "It was a very smart move to collect money from them," said Yaroslav Hrytsak, a local historian, adding, "It kept the wealth in the city, and that wealth has been transformed into architectural richness."
Many historic buildings remain but Lviv's prosperity didn't survive its bloody history. Over the centuries, the city fell under the rule of Poland, Austria, Austria-Hungary, Russia and the Nazi Germany. In addition, both Sweden and Turkey tried unsuccessfully to conquer the city. Then for almost half a century Lviv was ruled by the Soviet Union (苏联). With that, the city was condemned to relative obscurity(无闻). But recently things have started to change. Lviv experienced a sudden 40% increase in tourism in early2010, which was the highest rate in Europe. Just last month, its gates opened even wider, when Lviv became a host city for the Euro 2012 football championships.
So how has this happened? With the Soviet collapse, some saw new opportunities for reviving Lviv's former wealth and fame.
Limelight networks is a US-founded company. It's one of many digital tech firms to have opened offices in Lviv over the past few years. "It had good growth and experience in the US, however, the company needs more talent to do the new cool projects and products for our customers. This is why we're here in Ukraine." said CEO of Limelight networks.
Lviv's unexpected abundance of I.T. talent is in fact a legacy(遗产) of the former Soviet Union. To help the military, many Soviet universities focused on turning out world-class engineers and Lviv's university is still producing them. Now, the city is home to 23 higher education institutions.
It's clear that the city of Lviv does not intend to remain a hidden jewel for much longer.

Rotterdam’s Koningshaven Bridge, which local people call “De Hef”, is no longer in use. It’s an old bridge that was damaged by bombing during World War II. But it’s still important to many people in Rotterdam. When the city planned to take the bridge down in the 1990s, many people complained. Instead, the city fixed the bridge up and left it in place as a monument.
That’s a problem for the boat building company Oceanco. The company is building a huge sailboat, and the boat is too big to fit under the bridge. When the boat is finished, it’s expected to cost more than $500 million. It will be the world’s largest sailboat. Large sailboats are often called yachts but this is a super yacht. It will be 417 feet (127 meters.) long. When it’s finished , it will also be taller than the bridge. So Oceanco has asked the city to take the central part of the bridge down to allow the boat to pass through. The city has agreed and the government plans to rebuild the bridge afterward. Oceanco will have to pay for all the work done for the bridge. The work is expected to take a few weeks some time this summer.
The locals are upset about the plan of taking a historic monument apart. Despite the public’s protest against the plan, the city appeared to agree to the arrangement. Last week, a person speaking for the mayor said that the Koningshaven River is the only path the sailboat can take to the sea. The mayor’s office also pointed out the arrangement has economic efficiency, including providing a lot of jobs for the well-being of local people.

The annual whale festival in Hermanus, South Africa, kicks off today. The coastal town, located on the Western Cape about 1.5 hours from Cape Town, is well-known for whale watching. It is one of the best locations in the world to witness the migration of southern fight whales. The festival, which is the only eco-arts festival in South Africa, attracts upward of 130, 000 visitors.
Hermanus also takes pride in the world’s only “Whale Crier”. His job is to go around and herald the whereabouts of whales to everyone—with his horn. Fortunately, the timing of the festival almost guarantees a whale sighting—as close as a few meters from shore!
The whales are, of course, the main attraction of the festival, but many more terrific activities are available. The seaside environment, with the mountains as a backdrop, makes an ideal setting to enjoy the festival’s musical performances and fantastic seafood. But what the crocodile doesn’t realize is that one of the babies in her mouth is not a real baby. It’s a robot with a hidden camera in one eye.
The robot is one of 34 lifelike creations designed to secretly record animal behavior (行为) for the PBS Nature miniseries Spy (间谍) in the Wild. Director John Downer says these spy cameras have taken people deeper into the wild than ever before. But he believes the series is more than entertainment (娱乐).
“It’s all about feeling close to wildlife,” Downer told TFK. By understanding their behavior, we can understand animals in a way that’s really good. It can help us to pay more attention to animals, and finally to take care of them.”
Downer worked with film-makers, scientists, and engineers to create the lifelike spy cameras. Each was built to make realistic (逼真的) movements and noises. This allows the robots to more easily infiltrate the animal world.
For example, Downer s team built a wild-dog spy that takes a bow when meeting other dogs. It’s a way of relaxing other animals.
According to producer Rob Pilley, their realistic appearance allows the spy cameras to catch surprising animal behaviors in the wild. “We see the animals doing things that scientists have never seen before,” he says.
In a filming first, a spy robot caught a chimp caring for an abandoned (丢弃的) baby cat. “The chimp tried to keep it and protect it against the other chimps,” says Downer. His team has shared such parts of the films with scientists. The goal is to help them to do the scientific research.
When it comes to Spy in the Wild for raising awareness about the natural world, Cullen Hanks, a biologist at Cornell University, says, “It’s taking people closer to wildlife and helping them connect with nature.”
1. What can we learn about the crocodile’s robotic baby?A.It has just one eye. | B.It has difficulty in moving. |
C.It will be out of touch if in water. | D.It is shaped like a baby crocodile. |

Moreover, you are more likely to follow the behavior of an avatar in real life if it looks like you, said Jesse Fox, a researcher at the Stanford Virtual Human Interaction Lab. In her study, she used digital photographs of participants to create personalized avatar bodies.
In Fox’s first test, some participants saw their avatar running on a treadmill. Others saw themselves hanging out in the virtual room or saw a running avatar they didn’t know.
Fox contacted participants a day after the study and found that the people who saw their own avatar running were more likely to exercise (after they left the lab) than the people who saw someone else running or saw themselves just hanging out in the virtual room. In fact, those who watched themselves running were motivated to exercise, usually, a full hour more than the others. They ran, played soccer or worked out at the gym.
“They had imitated their avatar’s behavior,” Fox said.
In another test, some participants ran in place while watching their avatars become thinner, other participants stood still and watched their avatars become heavier, and others saw an unfamiliar avatar either slim (变苗条) or fatten.
“If they saw a person they didn’t know, they weren’t motivated to exercise. But if they saw themselves, they exercised more,” Fox said. “Personalized avatars could be used to motivate healthy behavior. For example, someone on a long-term weight loss schedule could pull out his or her smartphone and track progress by watching the avatar body slim down onscreen.”
1. What did Jesse Fox do for her study?A.She let participants choose avatars according to their body shape. |
B.She created personalized digital images for participants. |
C.She took different photos to record participants’ changes. |
