She came into my life when I was seven years old. My dad found her at work. She was wandering and starving. He took one look at her, and said, “Seems like you could use a good home.” He opened up the door and she jumped in. Her tail wagged (摇动) all the way. I was still at school when my dad arrived home with the puppy. Mum and dad fed her and gave her a bath. This would be my first pet. I had always wanted a dog. My parents told me when I was old enough and responsible, I could have one. Well, I guess they figured the time was right.
When I walked back home, a white and black puppy with a red bow stuck to her head greeted me with many puppy kisses. A wild joy took hold of me and a very special friendship was born that day.
Now she needed a name. My older brother laughed at her and said her tail didn’t wag back and forth like others, but went in a circle. He moved his finger around his ear, and said, “She’s squirrely.” Thus my puppy got her name, Squirrely.

Brian sat on his front doorstep. He really wanted a new bike. Joe had just gotten one for his birthday, and Tyler’s was only about a year old. Brian had had his for five years. The seat was up as high as it could go, and his legs were still too long for his bike. Brian wanted a bike just like Joe’s and Tyler’s. Their bikes were perfect for popping wheels and cruising over bumps. If only he had 110 dollars. All he could come up with was 33.67 dollars. Where could he get the rest of the money he needed?
Brian thought and thought. His birthday was still five months away, and he was too young to mow lawns. What could he do to get the money? Maybe his dad would advance his allowance for the next few months. He got three dollars every Friday if he did all of his chores. His dad had agreed to do this once before, when Brian needed an extra six dollars. Maybe his sister would loan him the money. She had a lot of money saved up from baby-sitting. Baby-sitting! That was it! Brian could baby-sit. Oops! Wait a minute. No one would hi re Brian to baby-sit. He still was not allowed to stay home by himself yet. What could he do to get the money? Brian sat and thought.

When John stayed with them, he realized that Oliver was unhappy. He was not given his meals on time, nor was he taken for a walk. Oliver was shouted and abused all day.
“Your uncle bought Oliver so that the dog could protect his house from thieves, but actually neither he nor his wife loves him,” the gardener told John one day. John felt sad. At night, he could hear Oliver sobbing in the cold.“ Why don’t you make a coat for Oliver?” John paused and said,“ He feels cold.” His aunt snorted, “I have much better things to do.”
One day, John went out for a walk with Oliver, when the sky was suddenly covered with dark clouds and a fierce storm started raging. People ran here and there for protection, as the rain started falling. John ran to take shelter in a candy shop. It was only after a few minutes that he realized that Oliver was not with him. John searched the entire place after the storm but he couldn’t find him. John’s uncle put an advertisement in the paper. After all, he had spent lots of money buying Oliver and did not want to lose him.
It was a half-hour ride by bus. The house was a beautiful brick-colored structure. The middle-aged lady who greeted Oliver was a kind woman; She and her husband had answered John’s uncle’s advertisement in the paper. Since John’s uncle was out on an official tour, John had been sent to check on the dog
“He is asleep,” the lady said. “Come and have a look.” The small bed on which Oliver slept was covered with a warm quilt. A pot of milk stood in a corner of the room possibly for Oliver’s next feed. “I found him on the back seat of the car. He must have crept in during the storm. The poor dear was shaking with cold when I first noticed him,” the lady said.

My hero — Domi
Five years ago, I had a strange dream, directing me to adopt a particular dog. It was obvious from the dream that I would know the dog by his unusual face. But when I woke up, I could never recall what the unique facial feature was.
I was very curious. So early one Saturday morning, I went to the specified shelter to check the available adoptees. After looking carefully at all the dogs, I was disappointed that not one dog had anything unusual about its face.
On my way out of the shelter, I noticed a box of puppies (小狗) just outside of view from the main area. My attention was drawn to one puppy named Domi who appeared to have no fur on his face. I was worried about this strange-looking puppy, and hoped he hadn’t been injured. However, on closer inspection, I found he did have fur on his face, but it was a very odd shade of gray that made it look like skin. Satisfied and relieved that he was okay, I turned to leave the shelter.
And then it hit me: The face — it’s the dog with the unusual face! Immediately, I returned to the puppy. As I lifted him from the box, we bonded instantly. I knew I could not leave without him so I headed for the adoption desk. In that short amount of time, he had wrapped his paws around my heart; his barks, quite different from other dogs’, had a soothing (抚慰的) and comforting quality, also touching my soul.
Meeting with the shelter manager, I was informed a family had already selected him. There was, however, still a slight chance since the family had not made their final decision. After an anxiety-filled hour, I saw a member of the family, the mother, walk straight toward me, carrying Domi. My heart pounded as she approached. For a moment, she didn’t say a word. Then, with a broad smile, she said, “Here’s your dog.”

A Boy With a Mission
In1945,a 12-year-old boy saw something in a shop window that met his heart racing. But the price-- five dollars--was far beyond Reuben Earle’s means. Five dollars would buy almost a week’s food for his family.
Reuben couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything Mark Earle made through fishing in Bay Roberts. Reuben’s mother, Dora, struggled to feed and clothe their five children.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s weathered door. He told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding,“Can you please hold it for me for some time?” “I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled.
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out into the sunlight. There was purpose in his walk. He would raise the five dollars and not tell anybody.
When he stopped at a construction site, Reuben had an idea. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts. Sometimes nail sacks(麻袋)were thrown, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the local factory for five cents a piece.
That day he found two sacks, which he took to the wooden factory and sold to the man in charge of packing nails.
The boy’s hand tightly held the five-cent pieces as he ran the two kilometers home. It was dinnertime when Reuben got home. He looked at his mother and smiled. Sunlight from the window fell upon her shoulder-length golden hair. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together.
Her chores were never-ending: sewing clothes, cooking meals, baking bread and planting. But she was happy. Her family and their happiness were her highest priority.
Every day after school, Reuben was busy collecting the nail bags. Often he was cold, tired and hungry, but the thought of the object in the shop window encouraged him to hold on.
Finally, spring burst into green and Reuben’s spirits erupted. The time had come! He poured the coins out and began to count. Then he counted again. It would be enough if he sold two more sacks. Reuben ran down Water Street. The shadows were lengthening when Reuben arrived at the factory.

Jenny was a pretty five-year-old girl. One day when she and her mother were checking out at a grocery store, Jenny saw a pretty plastic pearl necklace. “Oh please, Mommy. Can I have it? Please!” Quickly the mother checked its price. “It costs a dollar and ninety-five cents. That’s almost $2. If you really want it, I’ll think about some extra housework for you to earn more money. Besides, your birthday is only a week later and you might get another dollar bill from your grandma.”
Jenny worked very hard, and sure enough, her grandma gave her a brand-new dollar bill on her birthday. Soon Jenny had enough money to buy the necklace. Jenny loved her pearls. They made her feel dressed up and grown up. She wore them everywhere — Sunday school, kindergarten, even to bed.
Jenny had a very loving daddy and every night when she was ready for bed, he would stop whatever he was doing and come upstairs to tell her a story. One night when he finished the story, he asked Jenny, “Do you love me?”
“Oh yes, Daddy. You know I love you.”
“Then give me your pearls.”
“Oh, Daddy, not my pearls. But you can have Princess — the white horse from my collection. She’s my favorite.”
“That’s okay, Honey. Daddy loves you. Good night.” And he brushed her cheek with a kiss.
About a week later, after the story time, Jenny’s daddy asked again, “Do you love me?”
“Of course, Daddy.”
“Then give me your pearls.”
“Oh, Daddy, not my pearls. But you can have my new doll. She is so beautiful.”
“That’s okay. Sleep well, little one. Daddy loves you.” And as usual, he brushed her cheek with a gentle kiss.
A few nights later, when the daddy came in, he noticed her hands were closed and trembling (颤抖) and one silent tear was rolling down her cheek. “What is it, Jenny? What’s the matter?”

When I was in school I remembered my best friend called me late night on Saturday to invite me to her birthday party next day. I was very happy and very excited to go there but I needed to ask permission from my parents. I went to my dad’s room and slowly asked him, “Dad, tomorrow is my best friend’s birthday party and I really want to go.” Dad said, “OK I don’t mind but ask your mom.” I went to Mom and said, “Dear Mom.” Suddenly she replied, “What do you want?” I was shocked, “Mom, how do you know that I need to say something?” She said, “The way you are talking shows that.” and she smiled. I asked her, “Mom, I want to go to my best friend’s birthday party tomorrow.” She said, “OK, you can go but you have to be back before 10.”
Then my preparations started. I made a card for my friend and started selecting cloths for the party, and finally everything was completed and I went to sleep and only one thing was there in my mind all the time THE PARTY. I was waiting for the night to end and the party to begin. Next morning, my mom was surprised to see me. No alarm, no Mom’s warming, just I woke up by myself.
The whole day had passed and now it was party time. My dad dropped me in my friend’s place and told me that he would be back at 10. I said, “OK, OK” and I ran away. I enjoyed a lot at the party. My friend loved that card which I made for her and everybody in the party loved my dress. I was on cloud nine. We had dinner, we played so many games and it was 10 finally. I remembered my mom’s advice that I should be back till 10.
