Beyond Burnout(精力耗尽)

America is seriously stressed out. More recently, the American Psychological Association reported that the country’s collective stress had reached worrying levels.     1     So before the stress in your life rises to that level, know there are steps you can take to prevent burnout.

Look for meaning at work. You are more likely to experience burnout-causing stress when something seems out of your control, against your will, or completely meaningless. Try to find ways, even the smallest of your daily tasks improves the lives of others.     2     Then you can live with stress longer.

Try to separate work and home. With the time for work and nonwork mixed up these days, research has recommended strategies you can use.     3     Use separate e-mail accounts for work and home, making a clear line between work and personal life, especially when you work from home.

Don’t ignore yourself. Physical activity is necessary to remove stress hormones(荷尔蒙). Many people are less active in order to rest when under stress.     4     While you don’t have to run away from a mountain lion these days, even light activities help “complete” the stress cycle.

5     It’s very common for your boss to continue to increase tasks over time. Talk to him/her when you feel your job should be more manageable, meaningful and under your control. If you don’t communicate your needs or limits, they may be ignored. If you don’t expect things will improve, consider changing jobs.

If you do feel burned out, proper treatment can help you deal with work-related stress and learn useful strategies and it can teach you to communicate with your boss and keep healthy both physically and mentally.

A.It is very likely to cause burnout.
B.Make an effort to find the work you like.
C.Recognize when it has become too much.
D.You should turn off work e-mail reminders.
E.You must deal with burnout in a proper way.
F.But movement is the most natural response to stress.
G.It makes you believe your work has a good purpose.

【推荐1】Charity Cycling UK has recently launched a campaign to raise awareness of dooring after discovering that many people don’t know what it is and those that do seem to think it’s a joke. Dooring happens when a driver or passenger opens the door into another road user - typically a cyclist - without looking for other road users.

Cycling UK’s chief executive Paul Tuohy told Gloucestershire Live, “Some people seem to see car dooring as a bit of a joke, but it’s not and can have serious consequences. Cycling UK wants to see great awareness made about the dangers of opening your car door, and people to be encouraged to look before they open.”

The charity says 2,009 of the 3,000 injuries were sustained(遭受) by cyclists, resulting in five deaths but says this might not be the full extent of the dangers.

Cycling UK says not all car dooring incidents will be attended by police, so the charity has written to transport minister Jesse Norman calling for a public awareness campaign urging all drivers to look before opening vehicle doors. One of the ways that the charity suggests could prevent injuries through dooring is the “Dutch Reach”, where people leaving a vehicle reach over and use the non-door side hand to open the door.

Cycling UK also suggests serious laws and advice on safer road positioning for people who cycle.

Mr Tuohy said, “In the Netherlands they are known for practising a method, known sometimes as the ‘Dutch Reach’, which we think could be successfully encouraged in the UK.”

“Cycling UK has written to the Department for Transport asking them to look into this, and stress the dangers of ‘car dooring’ through a public awareness THINK style campaign.”

If you’re really concerned about opening a door into the path of a cyclist coming behind you, consider using what’s known as the “Dutch Reach” to open the door. That will naturally turn you in your seat and give you a much better view of what’s coming up alongside the car.

【推荐2】Is forgiveness against our human nature? To answer our question, we need to ask a further question: What is the essence of our humanity? For the sake of simplicity, people consider two distinctly different views of humanity. The first view involves dominance and power. In an early paper on the psychology of forgiveness, Droll (1984) made the interesting claim that humans’ essential nature is more aggressive than forgiving allows. Those who forgive are against their basic nature, much to their harm. In his opinion, forgivers are compromising their well-being as they offer mercy to others, who might then take advantage of them.

The second view involves the theme of cooperation, mutual respect, and even love as the basis of who we are as humans. Researchers find that to fully grow as human beings, we need both to receive love from and offer love to others. Without love, our connections with a wide range of individuals in our lives can fall apart. Even common sense strongly suggests that the will to power over others does not make for harmonious interactions. For example, how well has slavery worked as a mode of social harmony?

From this second viewpoint of who we are as humans, forgiveness plays a key role in the biological and psychological integrity of both individuals and communities because one of the outcomes of forgiveness, shown through scientific studies, is the decreasing of hatred and the restoration of harmony. Forgiveness can break the cycle of anger. At least to the extent the people from whom you are estranged accept your love and forgiveness and are prepared to make the required adjustments. Forgiveness can heal relationships and reconnect people.

As an important note, when we take a Classical philosophical perspective, that of Aristotle, we see the distinction between potentiality and actuality. We are not necessarily born with the capacity to forgive, but instead with the potential to learn about it and to grow in our ability to forgive. The actuality of forgiving, its actual appropriation in conflict situations, develops with practice.

1. What is Droll’s idea about forgiveness?
A.People should offer mercy to others.
B.Aggressive people should learn to forgive.
C.Forgiveness depends on the nature of humanity.
D.People who forgive can have their own welfare affected.
2. What does the example in Paragraph 2 illustrate?
A.To forgive is to love.B.To dominate is to harm.
C.To fight is to grow.D.To give is to receive.
3. What does the underlined word “estranged” mean in the passage?
A.Connected and harmonious.B.Separated and disconnected.
C.Forgiving and loving.D.Aggressive and hostile.
4. What is the writer’s attitude toward forgiveness?
A.Favorable.B.Reserved.C.Objective.D.Skeptical.
5. What is message of the last paragraph?
A.Forgiveness is in our nature.
B.Forgiveness grows with time.
C.It takes practice to forgive.
D.Actuality is based on potentiality.
