There was a big fire in a forest. Animals that lived there had to find new homes.
Far away was a house where three little children lived. Their names were Thomas, Kathy and Carrie. It was lunchtime. Mom said,“Why don’t you have a picnic in the yard?”
The kids spread(展开) out the picnic blanket and put some carrot sticks and drinks on it. Then they ran back to the kitchen to fetch more food. But when they came back to the blanket, something was wrong. Where were the carrot sticks? They were all gone! “This must be a trick,” said Kathy. “Let’s leave the celery(芹菜) sticks here and see what will happen.”They told Mom that someone had stolen the carrot sticks. Mom hurried out with them to the picnic blanket. But now, not only were the carrot sticks missing, but the celery sticks were gone, too!
Mom said,“Well, your drinks are still out here. Get your sandwiches. You guys go ahead and eat them out here and maybe something will turn up.” They were just about to finish eating when Carrie looked over at the bushes(灌木丛) and saw something move. She softly said,“Shush! See the bushes moving?” A little animal came to the edge(边缘) of the bushes and looked at them. It was a rabbit. Quietly it went back into the bushes.
Thomas said,“Let’s get more celery and carrots, and see if that rabbit is our thief. We can put them at the edge of the bushes and watch from the window.” They carefully put celery and carrots down near the bushes and walked back to the house. As they watched, the little rabbit came out and carried the vegetables away into the bushes.
Mom thought that maybe because of the forest fire, the rabbit needed a new home. “Maybe we can keep feeding this rabbit, and she will stay here for a long time.”said Mom.

Once upon a time, a delightful dog named Ripple shared a home with her owner, Emily, with whom she had formed an unbreakable bond(关系)from the early days of her puppyhood(幼年). Emily was an elderly woman who lived alone and Ripple was her faithful friend, providing her with love and companionship.
Unfortunately, one day, Emily fell ill and had to be immediately transported to the hospital. Ripple was left alone in the house, waiting anxiously for her owner to come back. As the days went by, Ripple grew more and more worried, wondering where her beloved owner had gone and when she would return.
One rainy evening, Ripple heard a car pull up outside the house. Overjoyed at the prospect of Emily’s return, Ripple ran towards the door, barking excitedly. As soon as the door opened, Ripple’s eyes widened at the sight of Emily, who was visibly weak. Overcome with emotion, Ripple’s tail wagged(摇摆)wildly as she leaped towards Emily, showing her affection.
From that moment forward, Ripple became Emily’s faithful companion, never leaving her side for a moment. She would curl up(卷曲)next to Emily’s bed every night, always watching over her. Ripple would dutifully follow Emily around the house, ensuring that she was safe and comfortable. Emily would often say that Ripple was her guardian angel, appointed to watch over her in her time of need.
As Emily’s health declined, Ripple became even more attentive. She would bring Emily her slippers, help her to the bathroom, and even fetch her medications. Emily’s family and friends would often visit her, but it was Ripple who provided her with the most comfort and love.
Regrettably, Emily eventually passed away, leaving Ripple to face a world without her beloved owner. Ripple was very sad without her owner, frequently lying in Emily’s bed, surrounded by her scent(气味), shedding tears. Ripple’s family members did their utmost to comfort her, but her sense of loss and heartbreak remained evident.

She came into my life when I was seven years old. My dad found her at work. She was wandering and starving. He took one look at her, and said, “Seems like you could use a good home.” He opened up the door to his truck and she jumped in. Her tail wagged (摇动) all the way.
I was still at school when dad arrived home with the puppy. Mom and dad fed her and gave her a bath. This would be my first pet.
I had always wanted a dog. My parents told me when I was old enough and responsible, I could have one. Well, I guess they figured the time was right.
When I walked back home, a white and black puppy with a red bow stuck to her head greeted me with many many puppy kisses. A wild joy took hold of me and a very special friendship was born that day.
Now she needed a name. My older brother laughed at her and said her tail didn’t wag back and forth like others, but went in a circle. He moved his finger around his ear, and said, “She’s squirrely”. Thus my puppy got her name, Squirrely.

【推荐1】“Be sure to hang the decorations high,” said Polly, my stepmom. “Jake might mistake the colorful glass balls for his toys and try to bite them,” Jake was new to our family that Christmas. He was a beautiful brown-and-white dog. And, of course, he was loaded with the curiosity that made everything a toy.
Two weeks before Christmas, we brought out the boxes of decorations, many of which had been in Polly’s family for ages. Among them was a special box that held an entire gingerbread family (姜饼人). They were real cookies, hung with red ribbons (丝带) and made many years earlier.
Every now and then, I or one of my little sisters—Ruth and Sue—would pretend we were going to eat one, knowing that Polly would say, “You’ll break a tooth! They’re so old that they’re rock-hard.” We didn’t really want to eat them, but we enjoyed making fun of Polly.
Since we didn’t know how Jake would react to the decorations or the Christmas tree, we were careful to put the decorations up high. Jake sniffed (嗅) the tree a lot. Those first couple of days, Polly caught him starting to lift a leg on the tree twice. But he learned quickly and settled for sniffing from a distance.
The weekend before Christmas, Dad and Polly took us to watch the new holiday movie. Excited, we jumped into the car with bags of home-made popcorn, and off we went for a great evening.
A few hours later, we returned home, only to find...a terrible mess. It wasn’t the Christmas tree. In fact, we weren’t sure what it was. We stood just inside the door staring at the mess. As it turned out, it was Jake’s bed, which he’d destroyed. Left alone for the first time, he must have gotten bored, attacked it and left it for dead. We didn’t know that the bed was not the only victim.

Tom has an aunt who lives in a far-off village. He hadn’t seen her for two years and he really missed her.
Tom spent a lot of time with his aunt when he was a little boy. At that time, his parents were too busy with their work, so they sent him to his aunt. It was his aunt who took care of him for a long time. He remembered that back then a girl sometimes played with him. But he couldn’t remember her clearly. After all, it was so many years before.
Last week, Tom decided to visit his aunt. And he called her first.
“Hello, Auntie. This is Tom. How are you?” asked Tom over the phone.
“I’m fine, Tom. Thanks. I’m just a bit lonely,” said Tom’s aunt. Hearing that, he knew he had made a right decision.
“I’m coming this weekend. I want to spend the weekend with you,” he immediately said, thinking his aunt would be surely full of joy.
“Really? That’s great! I miss you so much,” his aunt said excitedly.
Tom set off on Friday afternoon. He thought he would arrive by taxi in the evening, but there was an accident on the road and all the traffic was stopped for almost an hour. When he got off the bus, it was getting dark.
It’s a ten-minute walk from the bus station to his aunt’s house. The village had experienced a lot of changes. Tom looked around curiously. Just at that moment, another bus stopped and a girl got off the bus. The girl passed by Tom and began to walk into the village. Thinking that his aunt was waiting for him, Tom began to walk into the village, too.
He walked behind the girl. After about two minutes, it seemed that the girl noticed him. She looked back hurriedly, and then continued to walk. Moments later, the girl looked back again and then quickened her pace.

When Jackie came to his first piano lesson in his mother’s car, he was already 11 years old. I preferred students begin at an earlier age, but owing to his insistence(坚持), I took him as a student. As much as Jackie tried, he lacked the sense of tone and basic rhythm (节奏). At the end of each lesson, he’d say, “My mom’s going to hear me play someday.” But it seemed hopeless. I only knew his mother from a distance as she waited in her aged car, but never stepped in.
Then one day Jackie stopped coming to our lessons. I thought about calling him but assumed, because of his lack of ability, that he had decided to quit. I also was glad that he stopped coming — he was a bad advertisement for my teaching!
Several weeks later I mailed to the students’ homes a letter on the upcoming concert. Surprisingly, Jackie received and asked me if he could be in the concert. I told him that the concert was not for dropouts, but for current pupils. He said that his mom had been sick and unable to take him to piano lessons but he was still practicing. I didn’t know what led me to agree eventually.
The night for the concert came. The high school gymnastics was packed with parents and friends. I put up Jackie last in the program. I thought that any damage he would do would come at the end of the program and the negative effect would reduce to the minimum (最小值).
The concert went off smoothly. Then Jackie came up on stage. His clothes were wrinkled (皱巴巴的) and his hair looked messy (凌乱的). “Why didn’t his mother at least make him comb his hair for this special night?” I thought.
