Edward is a middleaged man. Although he was not born in a rich family, he was raised well by his father and mother. His father owned a clothes shop, and used to work for more than 12 hours a day, so that his family could lead a comfortable life.

However, Edward’s father could not earn sufficient money to provide a decent life for his family. Edward was an average student at school, and used to score around 70 percent marks. Edward’s dream was to become a lawyer. Since his marks weren’t very high, he could not get the desired course that he wanted to study. Instead, he joined a bachelor’s degree course, completed the course successfully, and got a job in a company.

While his life was going on with no dramatic change, his father continued to work in his clothes shop, so that he did not have to depend on Edward. After getting a permanent job, Edward’s parents wanted him to marry. He got married to a girl from his native town, and at the same time was also promoted in his job. After a few years, his wife gave birth to beautiful twin boys.

Later Edward began to earn a handsome salary, and started to live luxuriously. He bought a new house and a new car. Some of the luxuries were really unnecessary. Although his company provided him with a car, Edward went and purchased a new car.

After a luxurious lifestyle that spanned for almost 6 to 7 years, Edward was suffering from financial crisis and was not able to pay for the children’s education and other basic necessities.

His father fell sick, and as a result, could not continue his work in the clothes shop. He requested Edward to provide some money for his treatment and other household expenses.

I live in a city where jobs are difficult to get and if you want to find a well-paid job, it will be even harder. Therefore, it is not surprising for you to see many people in our city walk a long way because they can’t even afford an old used car.

It was a cold windy day. I saw one of these people who often have to walk from and to work every day, when I was driving after work. A middle-aged man wearing only a thin overcoat was walking down the road and trying to ask for a ride from the passing cars. Unluckily, there was no driver willing to stop their cars. When I saw two cars in front of me pass him by, I wanted to do the same. But the sight of that poor man remained in my mind for quite a moment. I felt as if a big hand was dragging me and forcing me not to leave. Finally I drew back and gave him a ride.

As I drove along, we had a conversation, during which he told me something about himself and his family. I learnt that the man was doing everything he could to support his family using the limited salary from several part-time jobs. As you could imagine, every coin he earned was going to be used to pay for the house and food.

It was a long drive before we got to his home. All the way, I could feel his hardship and tiredness. But as we came close to the house where he was living, I saw his tired eyes grow bright and the whole body was lit up. His lovely girl was playing in the front yard. Seeing her father was out of the car, she ran to him as quickly as possible, reaching out her two small hands. He held the girl with his two strong hands, laughing and kissing her cheeks. I was lost in that happy moment. I smiled, said goodbye to them, wished them the future happiness and then drove off.

Jenny and James were ten-year-old twins. It was their mother’s birthday on the coming Saturday and the twins wanted to give her a surprise. What could they do? Baking (烘烤) a cake seemed quite impossible.

Jenny was sitting on the stairs, wondering how she could make her mother’s day special when James came running in and said to Jenny, “Hey Jen! Mummy is inviting her friends. I think she intends to give a party!”

“It means we have to do something great so Mum can feel really happy when we surprise her in front of all her guests,” replied Jenny. “We must bake a cake for her!”

The twins were making serious plans for the birthday party. They organized the seating plan, prepared the menu, bought the ingredients (原料) for the cake and decorated the dining hall.

On the big day, they woke up very early in the morning, wished their mother a happy birthday and asked her to watch TV or read some magazines.

“We will take care of everything,” said James.

“Yes,” said Jenny. “Don’t worry about the party. We have everything under control.”

Then the twins headed for the kitchen. They were baking a chocolate cake. Both of them worked fast.

Soon, people started arriving and gave gifts to the twins’ mother. The guests and the hosts chatted for a while and then everyone went to the dining hall for the cake-cutting ceremony. The cake was very beautiful and looked delicious. James and Jenny placed it on the table and handed Mother the knife. She blew out the candles, cut the cake and everyone sang the birthday song.

【推荐3】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

The Belfast of my youth was not the coastal tourist village that it is today. At the time, Belfast was still a blue-collar town. Before the supermarket existed, Cottle’s,a food market where my dad worked, was the only place where my mother could do her once-a-week shopping. Because we lived a few miles from Belfast, we'd usually combine the grocery trip with a visit to see my grandmother.

On one particular shopping day at Cottle’s,I stood behind my mother as she was unloading the grocery cart and checking her items out at the register. The candy displays on either side of me were full of Life Savers, Clark Bars, Tootsie Rolls, Sugar Babies —you name it!

“Can I get some candy?” I asked. My mother rarely veered (转向)from her list so I wasn’t surprised with her response. "No. " This much I knew for certain. "No" always meant "No". There was no sense in me asking a second time. But I really, really wanted that candy!

I reached for a Sugar Baby package. My mother didn’t notice. So I figured she probably wouldn’t notice if I ever so secretly put them into my pocket. We continued checking out and walked with the bag boy to the car where he loaded the bags into the car's trunk. No one noticed my action一no one! I did it! Wow! My very first shoplifting experience! A five-finger discount!(顺手牵“糖”)How exciting! How easy! How rewarding! Got my candy and didn’t need one penny to get it!

I sat in the back seat as my mother drove to where my grandmother lived. Slowly, so as not to make any unnecessary noise, I opened my prize and carefully slipped a Sugar Baby into my mouth. No one piece of candy ever tasted so good! When we pulled into my grandmother’ driveway, I knew I was in the clear. Miles and minutes separated me from Cottle’s. As I prepared to open my car door, I confidently slipped a few more Sugar Babies into my mouth.
