Everybody is afraid of something. That’s what more than 1,700 kids told us when we asked them about fears and scary stuff. We gave kids a list of 14 scary things and asked which one frightened them most. Here are the top 5 answers from our survey: ① Scary movies and TV shows; ② Scary dreams; ③Thunderstorms, hurricanes, and other horrible weather;④ War and terrorism; ⑤ Sounds heard at night.

But not everyone is afraid of the same thing. And what makes one person scared can be of no big deal for someone else. Plenty of kids said their biggest fear wasn’t on our list.

What is fear?

Fear is feeling that everyone has -- it’s programmed into all of us--and that’s a good thing because fear is there to protect us. We’re born with a sense of fear so we can react to something that could be dangerous. The baby cries, and their mom comes over to comfort him or her, helping the baby feel safe and OK again.

Real vs. Pretend

The best way to get over a fear is to get more information about it. As kids get older, they understand more and start seeing the difference between what is real and unreal. So when William’s imagination leads him to think of witches, he can tell himself, “Wait a minute. They’re only pretend things. I don’t need to worry about them.”

The same goes for the dark. A kid’s imagination can start playing tricks when the lights go out. What’s under my bed? Is that a thief i hear? With the help of a parent, kids can get more comfortable in the dark. Using a nightlight or shining a flashlight under the bed to see that there’s nothing there can help kids fight that fear.

1. What is paragraph 2 mainly about ?
A.The list of fears is not complete
B.The things people fear are of no big fear.
C.Kids have more fears than people think.
D.People are afraid of different things.
2. In the writer’s opinion,        .
A.having a sense of fear is not a bad thing.
B.babies have a weak sense of fear.
C.fear is not something that we are born with
D.not all people can react to dangerous things.
3. What does the underlined word “pretend” in paragraph 4 mean?

【推荐1】Lacrosse(长曲棍球)is a popular sport in Canada. It is one of the oldest organized sports in America. The Indians in northern New York State and southern Ontario, Canada, invented it. They used it to train for war. They invented this game before Columbus arrived in the New World.
People play lacrosse outdoors. The lacrosse field is seven metres long. At each end of the field there is a net. There are ten players on each team. Each player has a stick called “crosse”. The players hit a ball that is 21 centimetres around and weighs 140 grams. They try to hit the ball into the net as many times as possible. 文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文通过实验得出用甘油涂抹清洁后的玻璃就不会起雾的结论。

【推荐2】Experiment: A Steam-Proof Mirror

Have you noticed that after you take a warm shower or bath, the bathroom mirror is covered with tiny water droplets (水滴) that look like fog?

Here is a cure for foggy mirrors.

You will need

✮ Bathroom with mirror and shower or bathtub in the same room

✮ Small bottle of glycerin (甘油) (sold in drugstores)

✮ Liquid glass cleaner

✮ Paper towel

Do this

THE PROBLEM

Take a long, warm shower or bath with the door closed. Look closely at the mirror and wipe the water droplets with your finger. If the mirror is very clean, it will not get very foggy; the problem of a steamed- up mirror is worse when the mirror is dirty or dusty.

SOLVING IT

✮ Clean half of the mirror with glass cleaner and paper towels, and let it dry.

✮ Use a clean paper towel to rub some glycerin around on the half of the mirror you cleaned until it is covered with a thin layer.

The next time someone takes a long shower or bath, see what the mirror does.

What happened?

The half of the mirror covered with glycerin will not get foggy. That is because specks (微粒) of dust on the surface of the glass give the tiny water droplets a place to form. The glass cleaner removed any dust on the mirror and the glycerin gave the mirror a slick (光滑的) surface that didn’t collect dust; the water droplets had no dust particles to form on.

1. You need the following things to make the experiment except ________.
A.some glycerinB.a bathroom excluding a mirror
C.paper towelD.liquid glass cleaner
2. What is the right order of the experiment?
a. Take a long, warm bath or shower with the door closed.
b. Rub some glycerin around on the half cleaned mirror.
c. Clean half of the mirror and let it dry.
d. Prepare some necessary things.
e. The half of the mirror covered with glycerin will not get foggy.

3. What is the final result of the experiment?

3】The body gives off many gases. Although some smells may signal a need to bathe or that you ate a certain meal, other gases might point to serious disease. Now, researchers have come up with a system that uses earmuffs to catch the disease-signaling gases. Doctors could get the information as patients wear a set of earmuffs. Results could be ready within minutes.

“The ear is a good place to monitor,” explains Johnson, a biomedical engineer. The ear’s skin is fairly thin, he notes. So gases don’t have to travel far to get out of the blood and escape through skin pores.

To collect the gases, Johnson and his team selected earmuffs that make a tight seal with the head. These are the type people often wear to protect the ears from loud noise. His team made two holes in the muff covering one ear. A tube slowly pumped air in one hole. Another tube pulled air out of the second hole and sent it to a sensor.

In their tests, the team found that they could measure changes in the amount of alcohol coming from the skin of the ear. It could work much like a Breathalyzer that police use to test people for driving drunk. The team invited three men. Each had to avoid drinking alcohol for at least three days before taking part. Once in the lab, these men wore the earmuffs and sat for 10 minutes as the system recorded normal gas levels leaving their ears. Afterward, the men drank a big amount of alcohol. About 7 minutes later, the earmuff system tested out a rise in alcohol leaving the skin. After 50 minutes, alcohol levels reached the peak and continued falling until the test was over.

The team then measured other gases by changing out the sensor. With the right sensor, their earmuff system could test out disease. Later, they replaced the earmuffs with a one-eared version to make it a bit more comfortable.

Johnson imagines another possible benefit. The earmuff system could help doctors tell whether a child’s ear infections have been caused by bacteria or a virus. How? Each type of infection exudes different gases. That, in turn, could guide how doctors cure the disease.

1. What makes the ear a good place to monitor?
A.Its small size.B.Its thin skin.
C.Its clean surface.D.Its blood flow.
2. What did Johnson and his team find in their tests?
A.Sensors should be examined in time.B.Drunk-driving tests were ineffective.
C.Serious diseases were difficult to identify.D.Their system could be used to tell diseases.
3. What does the underlined word “exudes” in Paragraph 6 most probably mean?
A.Collects.B.Gives off.C.Cuts off.D.Uses.
