Today, people use the Internet to shop, play games, make friends and read the news. Many young people can’t imagine life without it.     1     In fact, the Internet has been used for a much longer time than most people think.

In 1957, the United States was in the middle of the Cold War. The Soviet Union (苏联) had sent up the first satellite (卫星), named Sputnik, into space. This meant the Soviets were ahead of the U. S. in technology. Americans were afraid.     2     One of the ideas was a network (网络) that would let people across the country communicate by using computers.

3     It was first tried out in 1969. For another twenty years, it was used only by scientists who worked with the U. S. government and by some engineers. Then, in 1990, the army of America gave the control of the Internet to the National Science Foundation.     4

The biggest change in the way that people use the Internet came in 1992. For the first time, the Internet was opened to the general public, creating what is now known as the World Wide Web.     5     Today, no one government controls the Internet and it just gets bigger and bigger. It makes our world different.

A.The network took more than ten years to develop.
B.Soon, people began finding all kinds of different things they could do on the Internet.
C.Most older people, on the other hand, think the Internet is only 10 or 15 years old.
D.People began to be fond of the Internet.
E.They didn’t know what to do.
F.The Internet then became available to colleges all over the United States and to scientists across Europe.
G.Scientists in the army of America started developing ideas for protecting the country.

【推荐1】John James Audubon was curious about some birds he saw near his Mill Grove home in the early 1800s. He caught a few of them, tied a thin silver string to their legs, and released them. The next year, the birds returned. Audubon realized that his feathered neighbors returned to the same nesting spot each year.

People had tried attaching bands to birds' legs before Audubon's experiment. More than 2,000 years ago, Rome officers sent messages attached to birds to keep their armies informed. Audubon's experiment, however, is the first example of banding used to learn more about the movements of the wild birds in North America.

Today, only trained scientists are permitted to band birds. An organization known as the Bird Banding Laboratory(BBL)supplies official aluminum bands. Each band is stamped with a unique identification number. Researchers collect information about banded bird's species, weight, sex, age, wingspan and general health. That information is shared with the BBL.

Modern technology has taken bird banding to a new level. Today, transmitters(发射器)that come in all kinds of sizes are used. They can be attached to the leg, the neck, the back, or even a bird's feathers.

Researchers can learn many things from a banded bird, such as patterns in nesting, feeding and migration. Banded information also gives researchers a sense of the general health of a group of birds. And information about the general health of birds helps scientists understand the general health of the environment, which is good for humans too.

Digital Learning

Learning communication can be of greater quantity and quality. Digital tools and activities can be used to provide each student rich, timely, targeted feedback on their work, increase the authenticity (真实性) and applicability of student assessment, and document the unique knowledge and skills attained by each student for employment or further study.

Learning relationships can be more critical, creative, competitive and collaborative. Digital tools and activities can be used to increase academic discourse, peer learning, and leadership and teamwork both in and outside of the classroom, and to make transparent data-based teaching and learning decisions from the class to university level.

Learning experiences can be more interactive and immersive (沉浸式的). Digital tools and activities can be used to shift learners from passive consumers of static content to active creators and curators (管理者) of digital content that can be remixed and repurposed in a quickly changing knowledge economy.

Learning stakeholders can be more invested and involved. Digital tools and activities can be researched, developed and deployed through each schools’ support and development of faculty, professional services’ expertise (专长, 专门知识) and resources, and students as inspiration, agency and evidence of success.
