Anything Is Possible

When I was a little kid, I would always come in last when my friends and I ran races. I was never fast at running. I also had a hard time playing basketball because I couldn’t jump well. It’s hard to jump when your ankles don’t move. So, I was always picked last to be on a team. I used to get so frustrated and would be really upset about my prosthetic legs(假腿). But I made up for it all when I got my first pair of skating shoes.

I was born with a condition that caused me to have to be fitted with fake legs and feet. I got my first ones when I was eight months old. But for those of you who think that a person with no I was on skates, I felt like I was able to move just as fast as the other kids. So, I kept practicing —and I learned how to get up. Soon, I got better and faster. Then, when my friends were running races, I would put on a pair of skating shoes and skate the race with them. Win or lose, I was able to keep up.

Since skating had become my favorite thing to do, I signed up for the local roller hockey (曲棍球) team and then the ice hockey team. I began playing hockey year round.

When I first joined, I thought I would just skate up to the net and take a shot. But I soon found out it wasn’t so easy. I didn’t score one single goal that whole season. So, I trained hard in the off-season and the next year I signed up again and got through with the tryout(选拔赛).

A Regret

As I sat on the couch, my heart was filled with guilt. I recalled how terrible my mistake was, regretting my every move.

It was finally the start of the school holidays. As soon as I reached home, I jumped into my bed. “Freedom!” I shouted with joy.

“Tim, stop relaxing. Didn’t you say that you wanted to learn how to skate? Your father bought you a new skateboard. He will start teaching you tomorrow!” my mother said with delight. Immediately, I jumped out of my bed and sped downstairs. Lying on the dining table was a wonderful skateboard with my name carved on it. The colours, shape and size of each pattern were incredible.

“Can I start now?” I questioned impatiently. My mum shook her head and firmly said that it was too dangerous. A frown (皱眉) filled my face. Disappointed, I took my new skateboard up to my room.

As I stared at the window, I realized how perfect the weather was. The sun was shining, and the birds were singing. There were not many people as well. “No one will know that I stole out secretly and it will not be dangerous. There aren’t many people anyway!” Without hesitation, I tiptoed out of the house. “I can’t wait any longer! I can’t wait!” I spoke to myself in a whisper.

At a nearby park, I placed the skateboard on the ground. Despite being clueless on how to skate, I found a creative way to do so. One of my favourite moves was sitting on the skateboard, with two hands on it, using my legs to move forward.

Not long after, I crowned myself “Master of Skating”. I finally got the hang of it and was skating all around. “My method is amazing!” I announced. At that moment, I saw a long and steep slope (陡坡). My face lit up and I quickly headed towards it. I was filled with confidence to the edge. I flew down the slope with excitement and joy.

For years I took the school bus to and from school. But when I got my licence at 17, I would jump on any excuse to drive. Two weeks after I got my licence, in January 2012, we had exams at school and on the Monday I decided not to drive because I was tired. That afternoon I sat on the bus and thought, “I can’t wait to go home and take a nap.”

For almost six months, we’d had the same driver. Every morning and afternoon he would say hi and chat a little. All the kids on the bus were from our school; there were about 30 of us, aged from four to 18. I’d talk with everyone and sometimes bring the younger ones sweets. I was like the bus mother and I enjoyed it.

The younger kids sat in the front and the high schoolers sat in the back; I sat in the middle. That afternoon I was sitting next to a 13-year-old girl who was telling me about her day, when there was a heavy dull sound. I looked up to see the younger children standing and looking down towards the front of the bus. Our driver wasn’t at the wheel.

It was around 3 pm, so there was a lot of traffic and we were at a busy crossroads. The girl was sitting with jumped up and said, “You just got your licence — you have to go drive.” I replied, “What? My driving licence isn’t to drive a bus!” But she said, “You’ve got to go.”

We’d been still at a red light but the bus started to move slowly, at about 5 mph, on its own.

Everything went into slow motion. I headed to the front and yelled for someone to call the police. The driver had fallen from his seat and his feet had come off the pedals (脚踏板). He was on the ground, shaking. His whole body was blocking the front of the bus. I couldn’t reach the brakes or sit down.

It was September 10, a warm Wednesday morning. Jennifer, a fifteen-year-old girl, was monitor of Class 908.As usual, she got up early, dressed herself and rushed out to the bus stop without breakfast. She was supposed to arrive at school at 7:00 o’clock because some of her classmates were planning to prepare for the celebration of Teachers’ Day.

When she got to the classroom, some of the students started to decorate their classroom with colorful paper-cuttings and balloons. Others went out to buy cakes, soft drinks and fruit. The blackboard was decorated with beautiful words, which read “Happy Teachers’ Day!”.

Mr Li, head teacher of that class, must have found it strange enough when he got close to the classroom. It was too quiet as if no student was in. He had never thought a complete surprise was waiting for him.

Entering the classroom, Mr Li was greatly surprised to find all the students standing in line, clapping hands and saying loudly “Happy Teachers’ Day!”. The girls began to sing songs for Mr Li and three boys showed their Chinese kung fu talent. So excited was Mr Li that he sang a new English song for all the students. What a wonderful time they were having!
