So why was the humble poster so popular? The simplest argument is that it allows children and teens to match their bedroom to their personality. Adolescence is a time when we long for independence and a voice, and posters allow that freedom. This is particularly important at a time when the bedroom is an important space away from the pressures of school, annoying brothers or sisters and parents who seem to go out of their way to cause embarrassment.
Another advantage of posters as a first attempt into decoration is their transience. Buying magazines with pin-ups of your favourite celebrities is a more affordable and less time-consuming alternative to decorating a bedroom and, once a fashion passes, posters can easily be taken down.
My own walls were covered with posters from a young age. At the risk of sounding strange, swapping my posters around was a hobby during my teenage years. I’d commit hours to rearranging them on my wall, ensuring every inch was covered.
Research conducted by George Home /Asda in 2017 showed just 7 percent of teens had posters on their walls compared to 78 percent in the 1990s, largely due to the“plain walls and fairy lights aesthetic (美学)” favoured by You Tubers and influencers. The experimental teenage bedrooms of Gen X and Millennials are gone, now bypassing the stage entirely and transforming straight into a more adult space.
It’s sad to think young people are missing something that played such a big part of youth culture, but times have moved on. And if the love of all things old-fashioned continues to be influenced by shows such as Stranger Things, perhaps the poster will enjoy are birth in popularity, who knows? As someone who found so much joy in the posters that decorated their walls, I really do hope so.

Obviously, students are terrible at adjusting their sleep cycles to their daily schedule.
All human beings possess a body clock. Along with other alerting systems, this governs the sleep/wake cycle and is therefore one of the main processes which govern sleep behaviour. Typically, the preferred sleep/wake cycle is delayed in adolescents, which leads to many students not feeling sleepy until much later in the evenings. This typical sleep pattern is usually referred to as the “night owl” schedule of sleep.
This is opposed to the “early bird” schedule, and is a kind of disorder where the individual tends to stay up much past midnight. Such a person has great difficulty in waking up in the mornings. Research suggests that night owls feel most alert and function best in the evenings and at night. Research findings have shown that about 20 percent of people can be classified as “night owls” and only 10 percent can be classified as “early birds” ------ the other 70 percent are in the middle. Although this is clearly not true for all students, for the ones who are true night owls, this gives them an excellent excuse for missing their lectures which unfortunately fall before midday.

He sometimes spends days working on a piece, only to see it washed away by the sea or a storm and that is just the way he likes it.
Jim discovered his artistic talents about ten years ago, when he was wandering aimlessly on the beach with a stick. He ended up drawing a 12-foot-long fish. Since then, Jim has traveled over 1,800 miles while creating over 600 pieces of sand art.
Over the years, his drawings have become bigger, but the tools he uses haven’t changed — all he needs is a stick, a garden rake and most importantly, his lively imagination!
Just like any good artist, Jim is quite particular about the “quality” of his canvas, sometimes walking for miles, in search of perfect sand. His latest piece of work, which is also the world’s largest freelance drawing, was created in the desert sands of Nevada. It took Jim three trips, eight days and over 100 miles of walking to create this 3-mile work of art. It took the storm just one night to destroy it! However, Jim says he actually enjoys watching the waves or rain wash his paintings away. Jim’s art has become very popular over the years and was even the topic of a documentary named “Sandman” in 2005.
1. Why can nobody own Denevan’s art according to the story?A.Because it is too expensive. |
B.Because nobody likes it. |

Reading grew up with an early appreciation for nature, exploring the nearby forests and coastlines. While studying art at Bowdoin College and seeing the great amounts of waste from her painting and sculpture (雕刻术) classes, she began to seriously consider her footprint as an artist. She thought how she could paint landscapes if she was harming them. Two weeks before her graduation, she changed her theme and began using the rubbish as her canvas (画布).
After teaching and traveling throughout the country, while also picking up rubbish to bring to her studio, Reading began volunteering at Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Then, while in Texas during the summer of 2017, a broken hubcap (车轮毂盖) she picked up by the side of the road gave her a new idea. She began to paint the mountain landscape on the hubcap, held it up in front of the real range and took a photo. It became the first in her ongoing series.
Reading: who sells prints of her work for $110-$ 250, often paints outdoors after boating or hiking 5 or 10 miles into the wilderness, completing her landscapes and photos a few hours later. Sometimes she takes her rubbish to the studio and then hikes the finished product back to take her photos, lining up the painted objects with the natural landscape.
For better or worse, materials for Reading’s chosen medium will never be in short supply. Thus, as for Reading, artistically and environmentally, there is a lifetime of work to be done. She hopes that her works reminds others of that fact.

He attended school at Cheshire Academy, and studied carving with his immigrant father, Tomas Kensett, and later with his uncle. He worked as a carver in the New Haven area until about 1838, after which he went to work as a banknote carver in New York City. He didn’t know his carving experience would benefit him later. In 1840, Kensett traveled to Europe in order to study painting. He sketched (画素描) and painted throughout Europe, improving his talents. During this period, Kensett developed an affection for the 17th-century Dutch landscape painting. He returned to the United States in 1847.
After establishing his studio and settling in New York, Kensett traveled extensively throughout the Northeast and the Colorado Rockies as well as making several trips back to Europe.
Kensett is best known for his landscape of New York and New England and seascapes (海景画) of coastal New Jersey, Long Island and New England. He is most closely associated with the so-called “second generation” of the Hudson River School. In 1851 Kensett painted a monumental canvas (巨幅油画) of Mount Washington that has become a sign of White Mountain art.
Kensett’s style evolved gradually, from the traditional Hudson River School manner in the 1850s into the more improved Luminist style in his later years. By the early 1870s Kensett was spending considerable time at his home on Contentment Island, on Long Island Sound near Darien Connecticut.
It was during this time that Kensett painted some of his finest works. Many of these were seascapes, the major example being Eaton’s Neck, Long Island (1872) now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The artist was widely praised and financially successful during his lifetime. In turn, he was generous in support of the arts and artists. He was a full member of the National Academy of Design, the founder and president of the Artists’ Fund Society, and a founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Kensett died of heart failure at his New York studio on December 14, 1872.

Wheat is just one example of how historical artwork can help track the transformation of food crops over time.
Friends since childhood, they took interest in plants in artwork and began with a visit to the Hermitage Museum in Russia — where they noticed an odd-looking watermelon in an early-17th-century painting by Flemish artist Frans Snyders.
“So if you think of a watermelon, you cut it through, it should be dark red on the inside. But that one appeared to be pale and white.” De Smet assumed the painter had done a poor job. But Vergauwen said, “This is one of the best painters ever from that era. So if he paints it like that, that’s the way it must have been.” Other paintings showed that both red and white watermelons were raised during the 17th century.
The team hopes to set up an online research database of historical plant artwork. They create a social media hashtag (主题标签) for it. Anyone could send pictures of relevant artwork and details of plants when they visit a museum or exhibit through the hashtag. But, they add, the sources need to be realistic. “If you’re going to use, for example, Picasso to understand how a pear looked, you might be misled.”

Many scientific fields deal with the strangest of the animal kingdom — like creatures with a handful of eyes and bodies so different from our own. Art can help us experience these hard-to-imagine parts of the natural world and shed light on new scientific discoveries.
Alia Payne, an interactive arts professor came to the National Museum of Natural History to work with the live jellyfish collections. She always got the same question from visitors, “How do jellyfish stings work?” She had the scientific answer for them but found it difficult to explain without a clear visual. That’s when a lightbulb went off in Payne’s mind. She built a 3D model of one of the stinging cells that visitors could touch and interact with. “I’ve always loved art for education,” said Payne. “We learn more easily when we have something to play and interact with.”
While art helps society experience, it also helps scientists understand the natural world. Dr. Karen Osborn, a zoologist at the museum, specializes in the striking creatures of the ocean’s largest habitat—the midwater. Midwater creatures are equipped with all sorts of unique features to get them through life in their extreme habitat, and Osborn’s research helps us understand how these animals came to be. “So I started learning photography,” Osborn explained. “It was really important because these animals don’t look so great when they’re preserved in a jar in the museum’s collections.”
Artistic creativity provides an opportunity to show off the bright colors, attractive body plans and cool adaptations of these creatures to the museum’s scientists, visitors and the world. In turn, art connects scientists to their own creativity and aids in their scientific process and the communication of their discoveries. By weaving together science with imagination and storytelling, art helps highlight the beauty of the ocean’s creatures even those fit for horror movies — and connects people to their innate curiosity for the strangeness of the animal kingdom.
