Red tourism in Shaoshan
For 17-year-old Luo Yaqian, a two-day trip to the former residence of Chairman Mao Zedong in Shaoshan, Hunan province, inspired her to work hard to realize her goal of going to a reputable university. During Luo’s trip, the students visited Mao’s former residence, his memorial hall and Mao Zedong Square. They also watched a movie and attended a lecture themed on Mao’s younger days.
Luo said she was deeply inspired by the late Chinese leader. “Mao decided at an early age to leave his hometown to make a difference with his life. I am also determined to work hard and achieve good results in the national college entrance exam to realize my dream.” she said.
In April, the authorities in Hunan launched a special study tour campaign for all primary and secondary school students to visit Shaoshan to make good use of the city’s “red tourism” resources. By the end of last month, more than 81,600 students had taken part in the study tours in 93 batches, local government figures show. The cost of these tours is covered by the government.
Li Qingshan, 65, and his wife, Sun Zhuyun, 63, visited Shaoshan early this month from Qingdao, Shandong province, as they feared there would be too many visitors during the 130th anniversary of Mao’s birth on Dec 26. It was Li’s second visit to Shaoshan, following one he made in the 1990s. “Shaoshan has definitely improved greatly over the years, and the local environment, roads and scenic spots are now much better.” he said.
Li, who served in the military in Shenyang, Liaoning province, for several years in the late 1970s, admires Mao’s skills as a military leader. “He was a true leader of the Chinese people, and dedicated himself to changing their destiny.” he said.
When the couple arrived in the square, it was already packed with visitors waiting their turn to bow three times in tribute to Mao. Some visitors paid for a two-man military-style escort to guide them to the foot of Mao’s statue. After Li and his wife bowed three times to the statue, they had tears in their eyes. Sun said: “People of my generation have lived through tough times, so we have deep feelings for Chairman Mao. He was a savior. Without him, we would not have been able to dream of living happy lives today.”

Now she is studying in Essen, a large city in Western Germany. I recently went to stay with her----it was my first visit to Germany! Essen is a very large city. It has all the conveniences of any large city so I felt immediately at home. I love the variety of shops, restaurants, shopping malls, cocktail bars, nightclubs, parks and even a lake. There is also a city-wide network of trams(有轨电车), which makes getting around a piece of cake!...
I found the people to be really friendly, and most Germans speak very good English, which made life easy for me. I was surprised by the casual attitude to alcohol in Germany, where it seems normal for people to drink beer on the street or on the tram. My girlfriend and I visited two famous local cities. Dusseldorf and Cologne, which are both on the Rhine River. Dusseldorf is an urban metropolis with a great variety of restaurants. We took a boat tour on the river and went up the Rhine tower, a really tall building which offers great views across the city. Cologne, as you might know, is world famous for its perfumes. The cathedral(大教堂)there is an unmissable landmark. We made the effort to climb to the top of one of the cathedrals tower, The spiral(螺旋的)stairs seemed endless. but it was worthwhile for the impressive sights from the top.
We also went in a cable car over the river and tasted a German delicacy called "Spaghettieis” which is ice cream with strawberry sauce! I also got to try the famous German sausage. I must admit, I really enjoyed the food! The only disappointment was the grey and rainy weather, which proves that Britain does not have the worst weather in Europe!

Laguna
One glance at Laguna Beach can leave the viewers amazed at its beauty. Yet there is more to it than its good looks. Laguna features more than 100 art galleries and studios, which won’t let viewers down. Summer is Laguna’s peak travel season when the majority of its yearly festivals take place. Winter will likely bring discounts, but you won’t be able to swim at the beach.
Monterey
What Monterey lacks in swimmable shorelines it makes up for in breathtaking scenery. Monterey State beach is an underrated attraction, offering 4 miles of quiet beach, where you’ll find relatively few beachgoers. Monterey’s central California location subjects it to mild temperatures during the winter, making Monterey an attractive destination year-round.
Pismo
This small beach town offers little to do other than beach activities, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It offers outdoor activities throughout the year, including surfing, kayaking, surf fishing and swimming. Don’t forget to see butterflies at Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove if you’re in town between late October and late February. The best time to visit is during the fall, which offers warm temperatures.
Pfeiffer
As an ideal place for photographers, Pfeiffer Beach impresses with its awesome surrounding cliffs and collection of rock formations. Keep in mind, though, that the beach is not safe for swimming due to its strong currents and underlying rocks. The best time to visit is from September through November when the summer tourists have returned home.

The ship, called Yara Birkeland, is owned by Yara, a company that makes fertilizer (化肥). The company wanted to develop a ship that wouldn’t pollute the earth and was completely self-driving. The company says that in the future everything, including loading (装载) and unloading the ship, will be done by machines.
The Yara Birkeland can carry 120 large containers like those pulled by trucks. But the ship is fully powered by electricity. The electricity is made by water energy, so there’s no pollution at all.
The Yara Birkeland won’t usually be going to Oslo and will only travel from Yarn’s factory to the port in Brevik.
In the future, as an autonomous ship, the Yara Birkeland is expected to operate without any humans. Yara plans to spend the next two years training and testing the ship.
The Yarn Birkeland will have many challenges. It will be moving in a narrow place. It will have to learn to deal with the changes of the water. The ship will need to pass under two bridges and avoid all the other traffic on the busy water. Finally, it will have to stop at one of the busiest ports in Norway.
The company hopes to solve most of these problems in the next two years. Yarn’s leader, Svein Tore Holsether, thinks that in three to five years, the ship might not even need to have controls that a human could use.

But this piece of French history is now at the center of a storm after the city’s police ordered that the booksellers and their stalls (排位) be relocated for “safety reasons” to make way for the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympic Games in 2024.
One plan was for booksellers’ boxes to remain in place but they must be examined by the police first and sealed off (封锁) during the Olympic event, which would attract millions of visitors to the city—including many who would potentially visit their stalls. Another plan, considered even worse by booksellers, was to move the boxes elsewhere. As booksellers pit on, many bores have been is place for 30 or 40 years. Most are mused and all their parts are not strong enough.
Although the city’s government has offered to relocate the bookstalls and cover the cost of the move as well as repairing damaged stalls, booksellers say the lack of consultation over a decision affecting a Paris landmark has left them fearful about the future.
Plus, there’s concern about what will happen when the Olympics are over. “Are they even going to offer us the same spots again after the games?” asked a bookseller. “I’m afraid that we get our boxes back either in a year, or maybe never, or with someone else’s things in them,” he said.
Booksellers worried that not only would moving the boxes be much more expensive for the capital, but a relocated book market wouldn’t work. “The stalls only make sense when they are on the banks of the Seine,” they said. The attraction and culture of the boxes is their age-worn character, their poetic shades of green.

Fruit from the new Meat Trees, developed by British scientists using the gene technology, is closely like ordinary grape-fruit. But when you cut the fruit open, inside is fresh beef!
“Our trees may sound like something out of a science fiction movie, but it’s really true,”declares Dr. Vincent, director of the UMA Group, which created the amazing trees. “Vegetarians have been complaining for years that in spite of their firm belief against eating meat, they still desire the taste of meat once in a while. Now they can have their cake and eat it too.”
Although it’s taken 12 years to develop the trees, the idea is simple. “We take the genes from cattle and put them into the cells (细胞) of grape-fruit trees,” Dr. Vincent says. “When the seeds grow into trees, they produce meat instead of ordinary fruit. You get the taste — even the smell.”
Those who’ve tried the meat agree it tastes like the real thing. “I was a bit unwilling to believe at first when I sank my teeth into a hamburger after they told me it grew on a tree,” says Londoner Mark, who took part in a taste-test. “But it was juicy and delicious ─ nothing leafy about it at all.”
Meat Tree products could be on the market in Great Britain by the end of the year and on dinner plates in the U.S. by 2020. Some vegetarians insist they should never eat meat — even if it grew on a tree. Others love the idea. “My mouth is watering already,” says a devoted vegetarian of 20 years.

Usually, his mind drifted—to playing outside, to his dog, or to the ants. Willard was especially curious about those ants. He felt like them, small and insignificant. He noticed the ants were coming and going from a hole in the dirt. Gathering pieces of wood, Willard constructed a little building for ants.
At school, Willard had problems, but he knew he could do something special. Willard created tiny furniture for the ant houses. His artistic skill increased, and a love for little things began to grow. At age nine, Willard began carving (雕刻) faces on toothpicks. When he showed his mother the carved faces, she said, “This is what you do well. You must work hard to be the best.” Years later, Willard carves the tiniest artwork in the world! His sculptures are so small that several can fit on a full stop at the end of a sentence.
Willard works best at night when there are few disturbances. He often works for months to complete a sculpture. Willard’s favorite paintbrush is one hair from the back of a dead fly! To move his sculptures, Willard uses an eyelash. But even that can be tough. Once, while moving a microscopic Alice in Wonderland, his cell phone rang. Terrified, Willard took in a quick breath. When he looked back, Alice was gone. After laboring for weeks to carve her, he’d accidentally breathed her in!
Willard sculpts everything from famous people to fictional characters. Because of their beauty and rarity, his sculptures have made Willard a wealthy man.
