Find Your Adventure at the Space and Aviation (航空) Center
If you’re looking for a unique adventure, the Space and Aviation Center (SAC) is the place to be. The Center offers programs designed to challenge and inspire with hands-on tasks and lots of fun.
More than 750,000 have graduated from SAC, with many seeking employment in engineering, aviation, education, medicine and a wide variety of other professions. They come to camp, wanting to know what it is like to be an astronaut or a pilot, and they leave with real-world applications for what they’re studying in the classroom.
For the trainees, the programs also offer a great way to earn merit badges (荣誉徽章). At Space Camp, trainees can earn their Space Exploration badge as they build and fire model rockets, learn about space tasks and try simulated (模拟) flying to space with the crew from all over the world. The Aviation Challenge program gives trainees the chance to earn their Aviation badge. They learn the principles of flight and test their operating skills in the cockpit (驾驶舱) of a variety of flight simulators. Trainees also get a good start on their Wilderness Survival badge as they learn about water- and land-survival through designed tasks and their search and rescue of “downed” pilot.
With all the programs, teamwork is key as trainees learn the importance of leadership and being part of a bigger task.
All this fun is available for ages 9 to 18. Families can enjoy the experience together, too, with Family Camp programs for families with children as young as 7.
Stay an hour or stay a week — there is something here for everyone!

For example, astronauts have to rely on the ISS’ life support system, which provides oxygen and absorbs carbon dioxide. But sometimes astronauts need to deal with unusual air leaks.
Normally, the ISS releases a small amount of air each day to rid the harmful gases. But recently, the air seemed to be leaking at a slightly higher rate than usual, which became a cause for concern, according to MSN. The three crew members currently on board are staying in the Russian segment(舱段) of the ISS temporarily while NASA tries to find the origin of the leak in the US segment.
This isn’t the first time that an air leak has occurred on the ISS. On Aug 29, 2018, an air leak was discovered on the ISS. Fortunately, six people on board found a hole measuring 2 millimeters in diameter on Soyuz MS-09, a Russian spacecraft temporarily docked with the ISS. The astronauts patched the hole with tape. But the question remains: What can cause holes in the hard surface of spacecrafts? Space debris(碎片) can.
In low orbit, space debris circles around Earth at speeds between 7 to 8 kilometers per second. Because of the high speed, it can penetrate the surface of the ISS. A NASA report submitted to the US Congress said the ISS has a 55-percent chance of being penetrated by some sort of space debris, according to the website New Scientist. However, finding a tiny hole is not easy.
The ISS measures some 109 meters by about 73 meters, roughly the size of a soccer field. So how do astronauts find a tiny hole in such a large area?
When air leaks occur, astronauts seal off various sections of the ISS to narrow down the area. Once the location of the leak is found, it is closed and the pressure on each side is checked.
This is exactly what NASA is doing now. The US space agency has been trying to find the hole, which is equivalent to “finding pinholes in a large airliner”, Xinhua News Agency noted.
1. What can we know about the recent air leak?A.It has exposed astronauts to harmful gases. |
B.More gas than usual is leaking in the ISS. |
C.It is happening in the Russian segment. |
D.NASA has already found the origin of the leak. |

All members of the Shenzhou XII mission crew, Zhai Zhigang, Ye Guangfu and Wang Yaping, the only woman on the mission, greeted students, teachers and other participants when the lecture started at 3:54 pm. They showed viewers how they live and work inside the space station, which currently consists of a core module, a spacecraft and two robotic cargo spaceships.
The astronauts displayed their exercise equipment and a specially designed space suit, and conducted demonstrations on physical phenomena in microgravity, such as “disappearing buoyancy” and a “water ball”. Ye, who is on his first spaceflight, showed how he rotated his body in the weightless environment. The astronauts also answered questions from students during the lecture.
Tens of millions of primary and middle school students across China watched the hour-long televised event. A total of 1,420 invited students were present at “ground class venues”, with some taking part in video chats with the crew members during the lecture.
It was the first lecture of the Tiangong Class, or Heavenly Palace Class, China’s first extraterrestrial (地球外的) lecture series to popularize space science.
More lectures will be held based on the country’s manned spaceflights and will also be presented by Chinese astronauts, the manned space agency said.
Shi Yi, a physics teacher at the Beijing No. 101 Middle School, said the space lecture was an eye-opening experience that would ignite students’ interest in science.
Wang Yihan, a fifth-grade student at the Yuxin School, said: “The astronauts’ experiments really intrigued and surprised me. I have great interest in spaceflight and would like to take part in our country’s space exploration program in the future.”
Vincent Wong Wai-shing, deputy principal of Hong Kong’s Pui Kiu College, said after watching the lecture that the event gave Hong Kong students an opportunity to communicate with the astronauts while stimulating their interest in space and science.

The flight was part of the airline’s Women Inspiring our Next Generation (WING) program, which was created in 2015 to help close the gender gap in aviation (航空) and expose more young girls to STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) careers. This is the fifth WING flight, with more than 600 female students flying Delta so far through the program.
The flight was planned and executed (执行) completely by women, including pilots, ramp agents, gate agents and flight control.
“At Delta, we believe you have to see it to be it, “said Beth Poole, general manager of pilot development, who helped start Delta’s WING initiative, in a statement. “We’re taking ownership to improve gender diversity by exposing girls at a young age and providing a pipeline so that 10 years from now, they will be the pilots in the Delta cockpit (驾驶舱) inspiring generations of women who follow. ”
While the students, who ranged in age from 12 to 18, were in Houston, they met with female mentors in aviation. They toured NASA’s Mission Control Center, Johnson Space Center and other key facilities in areas of flight and space exploration.
“It didn’t seem realistic to go after a career in aviation, but today I realized, ‘Hey, I can do this too’, ” said Katelyn J, age 17, a 12th grader from Advanced Learning Center.
Delta has achieved 100% pay parity for employees in frontline jobs. In the past four years, 7. 4%of the airline’s newly hired pilots have been women. The WING program is one of the ways they’re hoping to increase those numbers.
“I’ve loved being able to look at all of the things these successful women have accomplished, ” said Shanae C., 17, a 12th grader from Jordan Technical Institute. “I think we ill learn from them and build on their foundation of success.”
