I know my students by looking at their body language. I know when students are really interested, because they lean forward and look at me. Most tend     1     (look) up and make eye contact. People have a     2     (tend) to lean towards whatever they are interested in. So if the student has his head    3     (lower) to look at his watch, it     4     (imply) he is bored and just counting the minutes for the class to end. When they spent all their time     5     (look) anywhere but me, I know they are amused by something else. Their favorite activity is daydreaming.     6     their chins on their hands, they occupy     7     (them) by staring out of the window or up at the ceiling. Students who are angry, afraid, or experiencing     8     (anxious) may have their arms crossed in front of their chests and their legs closed or crossed, they may also hide their faces in their hands like they are     9     (embarrass) or ashamed. 文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道,主要讲的是上周,谷歌工程师Hiroyuki Komatsu提交了一份提案,建议在标准表情符号库中添加新的图标,以帮助那些对食物过敏的人了解他们在吃什么。

Last week, Hiroyuki Komatsu, a Google engineer,     1     (submit) a proposal to add new icons to the standard emoji library     2     could help those with food allergies understand what they are eating.

“Emoji should cover characters     3     (represent) major food allergens (过敏原), ” Komatsu wrote in     4     (he) proposal. “It enables people     5     (understand) what ingredients are used in foods even in foreign     6     (country) and to safely select meals.

Because emojis are everywhere and iconic, they could be helpful for restaurants and food packaging designers to communicate whether a product is made with common allergens. But as Komatsu’s proposal argues, many of the most common food allergens—such as peanuts, soy and milk—are missing or     7     (poor) represented by the current emoji library. There is an emoji for the octopus,     8     nothing for the squid; there is a loaf of bread that could symbolize gluten (谷蛋白), but a bundle of wheat could be     9     (clear) and more direct when labeling foods.

It’s common for the Unicode Consortium to add new emojis to the library: Several food-related emojis debuted (问世) last June. Apple included support for multiracial emojis in a recent iOS update.     10     artist even recreated Moby Dick in emoji characters.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了非语言交流的重要性以及除了能够读懂别人的信号,重要的是要意识到自己的肢体语言,并能够澄清你的真正意思。
【推荐2】阅读下面材料,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Non-verbal communication is the process of sending and receiving messages without using words. It may     1    (evaluate) in any social interaction because more than half of our communication takes place through body movements, facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, posture, and tone of voice. In fact, a     2    (politics) who only speaks will not be an efficient one.

However,     3     potential for misunderstanding is great, and these non-verbal signals can be in conflict with what someone is saying. For example, a person might say they oppose a new idea but their emphasis and tone of voice might suggest that they     4    (be) actually in favour of it. Similarly, someone might advocate a particular course of action, but their body language might indicate that they don’t really believe in it     5    (they).

The ability     6    (understand) and use non-verbal communication, or body language, is one of the most powerful tools     7    can help you connect with others, express what you really mean, and build better relationships. However, most of us only devote a small percentage of our time to     8    (learn) how to read and understand non-verbal communication, or how to use our own body language to send out positive signals.

It’s true that some aspects of body language are inborn, but many are also learned or     9    (culture) determined. For example, while nodding your head means ‘yes’ in most cultures, in some parts of Greece it means ‘no’. So, as well as being able to read other people’s signals, it’s important to be aware     10     your own body language and to be able to clarify what you really mean.

When I was in France I tried to practise my language skills. However, my    1    (break) French was so poor that sometimes I couldn’t make     2    (I) understood and so it ended in complete communication breakdown. I did my best to pronounce words clearly but of course I’m not a native    3    (speak) or anywhere speaker approaching that level, so people often misunderstood me.

The other day, I met someone from another part of the country     4    had such a strong accent that at times I found him virtually incomprehensible.    5    was hard to believe that we shared the same language, to be honest. And it wasn’t just the accent—as    6    matter of fact, he was speaking a different dialect and using slang(俚语),    7    (make) it difficult for me to follow him. We had to get someone     8    (translate) for us!

When you travel, there’s sometimes a language barrier that makes communication difficult. But I’ve found that body language, while not     9    (exact) the same around the world, is sufficiently universal(广泛适用的), which    10    (mean) that we can “talk” to other people. Gestures and facial expressions allow us to show people that we don’t understand, that, we want a particular thing, or whatever.
