At school last Thursday, I sat next to a girl who was coughing. I covered my mouth to protect myself from the cold. However, the moment I got home, I knew those germs (病菌) had gotten to me. I had a headache. My mom checked my temperature. Sure enough, I had a fever. My dad asked me to stay home from school until I got better. I was feeling down because I had a science test the next day, and I didn’t want to miss it.
The next day, my dad took me to the doctor’s. The doctor said I had the flu (流感). He advised me to get a lot of rest, drink hot and take some medicine. While at home, I slept most of the day. When I woke up, I tried to study for my science test. However, I couldn’t stay awake long enough to study. At that moment, resting was more important than studying.
After being home from school for four days, I finally felt better and returned to my classroom. My teacher, Mrs. Jenkins, gave me the science test I had missed earlier. She sent me into another classroom to finish it while my class went over the answers together. I knew I was going to have a lot of makeup work, but at least I was feeling healthy enough to take the test. Great!

You’re not alone!
Remember everybody else in your year is on the same boat. They may not realize it, but they’re just as nervous as you are. Moving to Senior High school is an opportunity, not a problem. Things are different and all you need to do is be polite and learn the new rules.
Teachers are ready to help!
If you’re unsure what to do or are worried about anything then you had better ask for help. Teachers are probably the best people to turn to as they’re experienced in helping new students. Some Senior High schools also have a “friends system”. If your school has this, then you will be paired with an older student. They will look out for you and help you if you have any problems or questions.
All change
There are lots of differences between Junior High school and Senior High school. You’ll have a homework diary or a student planner. You will have your lessons with different teachers in different rooms. You will have homework for different subjects on different days, so make sure you get organised. Make sure you have a copy of your school timetable written down so you know which rooms your classes are in and on which days you will have your different subjects.
Other points
If you’ve got an elder brother or sister at the school then ask them for advice.
Be yourself! It sounds simple, but people will know you much better if you just act naturally.
Having early nights makes a difference and you’ll find it easier to get up in the morning!

His students sat quietly and waited for him to speak.
“It’s been a pleasure teaching you this term,” he said. “You’ve all worked very hard, so I have a pleasant surprise for you. Everyone who chooses not to take the final exam will get a ‘B’ for the course.”
Most of the students jumped out of their seats. They thanked the teacher happily, and walked out of the classroom. Only a few students stayed. The teacher looked at them. “This is your last chance,” he said. “Does anyone else want to leave?” All the students there stayed in their seats and took out their pencils.

The truth was that my friend never failed in any subjects. I just think that she can’t accept failures because she lives her life as a perfectionist (完美主义者). What she fails to understand is that a lot of good can come from failures. For example, failure can help build relationships. Once I was cooking dinner for a friend. I was tired, and several dishes I tried to make turned out bad. I grew more and more upset until my friend told me that I shouldn’t worry. She cared more about our friendship than the dishes. That day, I learned that failure doesn’t always make people dislike you. In fact, after she said those words to me, I grew closer to her.
Failure can make success ever more exciting. Every few years, there would be an important test in the PE class at our school. Students had to run a mile within eight minutes. I was never good at running , so I failed every time until the third year at school. Then I began working out regularly, and yet I still failed that year. A few days later, however, the teacher gave me another chance to run and I got a pass finally! You can’t imagine how excited I was.
I felt the memory of the success was as sweet as honey, because I had to overcome failure to reach it. Now it’s clear to see that failure can teach us good lessons. It’s not an end — it can be a beginning.

Things I find silly delight him and little changes that wouldn't bother me at all bother him greatly. Most of the time he is happy but there are also times when he can be terribly upset. He will tear up things and cry for no reason. It always hurts me to see him suffer this way especially when there is little I can do to help.
This morning was particularly trying for him. He broke a new shirt and cried on and off for an hour. Finally he calmed down. I was still feeling stressed, however, and tiredly sat down at my computer to see if I could get a little work done. As I was turning it on, I heard my son laugh for the first time all day. I turned my head and saw him standing directly under the glass angel hanging from our ceiling fan. The light from our house lamps seemed to shine brightly all around him like a halo (光环). His eyes lit up as the little angel swung gently above his head.
At that moment my heart opened. I could see that the miracle was reminding me that my son was more than his Autism. I instead saw the shining soul within. I saw the love and light of his spirit and knew he was here for a purpose. My eyes watered and I appreciated this minor miracle and gentle reminder of his love for all of us.
Miracles are all around us, but we can't always see them with our eyes. We often have to see them with our hearts. Keep your heart open to them then. And let yourself be the miracle you were meant to be!

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
It was a bad time for me. I was low emotionally and tired physically. Probably because of this I hadn’t shaved for a few days. Also, because I had been doing some repairs at my daughter’s house, I was dressed quite scruffily (不整洁地). Boarding the bus to go home I saw it was almost full so I found a rail(扶手) to lean against.
That’s when a young woman, sitting with her child, stood up and offered me her seat. ‘Wow!’ I thought. Out loud I said, “Do I look that old and tired?” She replied, “You look like you’ve had a tough day.” I thanked her sincerely and stayed standing.
A moment later a man rose from his seat at the back of the bus and made his way towards me, walking past several people on the way. Then he told me about his addiction (毒瘾) problems, asked my advice, and just chatted about life for a few minutes. Then he went back to his seat. Very random!
Watching him go, I also looked at the bus-load of people between me and his seat. He hadn’t chosen to talk to those strangers. He chose to talk to this stranger, for whatever it meant to him and whatever comfort it brought him. Why?
That’s when it occurred to me. I must have looked like I had been where he was. I probably looked like a man who would understand a difficult life. I was humbled (谦卑的) and encouraged at the same time by the realization that even when we are at our lowest we can still help others — if we look like we might be able to meet them where they live or walk a while in their world.
