【推荐1】Angela Guzman was born in Bogotd, Colombia. At the age of 8 she moved to a tiny island in South Florida. The contrast was pretty vast. She didn’t speak any English, so she met with lots of challenges. At school, she would get stuck because she couldn’t understand or be understood. She thought “Well, everyone understands a picture! Why don’t I start drawing to communicate?” That was what she did. She tried hard to create pictures to show her meanings exactly, and then she became known as the artist in the classroom, from third grade through her whole years of secondary schooling. Later she chose to study design in college.
When Angela began her work in a big company, she was tasked with designing emojis — the company’s very first. At first, she intended to refuse the task because she had no idea what the word meant and what emojis would be used for. Her mentor (导师) said that the emoji was an icon (图标), an image, or a type of illustration, sharing joy, surprise, anger, fear, sorrow, love and so on.
Angela then began to study micro-expressions of humans and simplify or exaggerate (夸大) them in an illustrative manner. For example, the eyebrows make a V in anger and an upside down V in surprise. When she designed object emojis, she often turned to real-life items. She went to the party supply store, buying party poppers (派对烟花) to watch how the colorful paper pieces came out, and how light reflected off them. They were hard to capture, but Angela tried to make it.
Later, the tiny icons Angela and her mentor created were born and soon used by millions of people. When people praised Angela for her emoji design, she replied, “Actually, it’s an experience that teaches me a lot. One major thing is empathy (同理心) for communities worldwide. I pay close attention to the symbolism of color and the cultural symbolism overall. I think the cultural questions are important. For example, how do we make sure that every culture, every accent, or every person that speaks to these devices feels included? That was something I struggled with early on. This kind of thinking allowed my mind to be inclusive and mindful of everyone who would use the product.”

The Apple Watch, according to CNN, is “a simple rectangular (矩形的) shape with a range of stylish and useful wristbands.” “The style is classic... in those respects (方面) it’s up there with the top quality Swiss watches,” commented the news outlet.
The watch will be available in nine places, including the US, the UK and China, from April 24. The starting price is $349 (2,186 yuan).
With six different designs and 30 or so wristbands, the gadget “sets the standard for smartwatches, in style,” agreed The Brisbane Times,“but more importantly, in functionality (功能性).” “With the built-in speaker and microphone, you can receive calls on your watch. I have been wanting to do this since I was 5 years old,” said Apple’s chief executive Tim Cook.
In fact, anything you can do on the iPhone is there on the watch – e-mails, text messages, airline boarding services, and directions from Apple Maps. Using a home security app, you can keep an eye on your home from afar, or even open a locked door.
There are some features that have made Cook sure the watch is “our most personal device yet; a new chapter in the way we relate to technology”. According to NPR, the watch taps you on the wrist to draw your attention to a message or a calendar reminder, and it can send a tap on the wrist to another Apple Watch wearer.
However, the watch can also do things that are just plain fun. You can send a real-time display of your heartbeat to another Apple Watch to “let someone know you are thinking about them.”
Patrick Moorhead, a leading technology analyst in the US, described the tech company as “a master in the art of persuasion”. “The secret weapon is the ability to message each other by tapping on the watch,” he told The Associated Press. “I think people, particularly kids, are going to go nuts (疯狂) over that.”
So far, though, the most impressive part of this new device is “the monitoring of the wearer’s health and fitness,” said AFP. It will even tap you on the wrist if you have been sitting down for longer than is good for your health.

【推荐3】In 2012, Miyashita, a scientist at Meiji University in Tokyo, developed an “electric fork” that was originally intended to improve the flavor of hospital food—the idea being to make food taste saltier, for instance, without actually adding salt.
That was an early step for Miyashita, who had bigger plans. His new invention, the Taste Display, could reproduce any flavor one might care to think of.
The human tongue has separate receptors for detecting sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami. Miyashita's device has five different gels (胶体),each containing an electrolyte solution (电解液) that causes the tongue to sense one of those flavors. Each gel is connected to a separate electric current, and the taste associated with that gel weakens when the current is turned up. By adjusting the current strengths for the gels, which can be done automatically, the taste of a chocolate milkshake or a sirloin steak or any other desired treat can be experienced through the use of this device.
The Taste Display initially took the form of a rod (棒) that resembles a hand —held microphone with a surface that s designed to be licked (舔) rather than talked into. But Miyashita already has an early version of a mask, which affords a user continuous contact with the flavor giving surface, as part of a virtual reality system. He also has developed a "lickable screen" that can be incorporated onto a cell phone, allowing a person to watch cooking shows while tasting various samples.
Miyashita is exploring a new way of taste recording perhaps through the use of a device that can be dipped into food, giving quick readouts of the flavors. A portable “salt meter” like this already exists, and it could be adapted to measure other flavors too. “Within 10 years,” he predicts, “we should be able to instantly record and reproduce taste information.”
