Our neighbor, Mrs. Moore is an old artist, who lives alone with her cat Taffy. Her husband passed away years ago and her children work in other cities. Mrs. Moore always wears a serious look but in fact she is a very nice neighbor. She does three things every day-petting Taffy, painting and baking, among which baking is the part I like. Whenever the mouth-watering smell gets over the fence, I could expect a paper bag containing delicious cookies to be passed over the fence and shared by my sister Jennifer and me. To return this favor, my dad would mow the lawn (修剪草坪) for Mrs. Moore and help repair the water pipes.
Last year, Dad put his idea of building a tree house for us in our back yard into action. Dad shot from the hip (干事利落) and got everything in place within two weeks. It was a yellow tree house with red roof, which made a great place. for Jennifer and me to get out of the sight of Mom and Dad to have fun and talk about our girlish matters. We couldn’t wait to get in only to find Taffy had taken occupation of it and messed up the inside. We ourselves were unwilling to talk about such a problem to our nice neighbor, but we had no other choice. Dad was the one we sent to Mrs. Moore’s house for a friendly talk about the issue.
After the talk, Dad took Mrs. Moore on an inspection of the tree house, at which she was extremely astonished, saying she had never expected Taffy could be so fascinated with it. She promised to take care of the problem but to our disappointment, the cat could still find ways to climb over the fence and get into the tree house. After a thousand apologies to us, Mrs. Moore gave the problem a careful consideration and came up to a big decision: In view of Taffy’s obsession (痴迷) with a tree house, why not build one specially for him?

Julia always enjoyed running through The Dark Walk towards the light at the end of it. It was a dark, damp tunnel (隧道) made of smooth branches. This year she had the extra joy of showing it to her small brother, Stephen, and terrifying him as well as herself.
One day they found a hole on one side of the walk. Inside there was water, in which they perceived a panting trout (喘息的鳟鱼). They were both so excited that they were no longer afraid of the darkness as they bent down and peered at the fish panting in his tiny prison, his silver stomach going up and down like an engine; otherwise he was motionless. Julia wondered what he ate and thought of his hunger. She found him a worm. He ignored the food, and just went on panting. Bending over him, she thought how he had been in there. All the winter, in the dark tunnel, all day, all night, floating around alone.
Nobody knew how the fish got there. Her mother suggested that a bird had carried the egg. Her father thought that in the winter a small stream might have carried it down there as a baby, and it has been safe until summer came and the water began to dry up. Before they went to bed, Stephen asked his mummy the whole story of the trout, not really interested in the actual trout, but in the story which his mum began to make up for him, and Julia, in her bed, presented her back to them and read her book. But she kept one ear cocked. “And so, in the end, this naughty fish got bigger and bigger, and the water got smaller and smaller...” Passionately, she turned around and cried, “Mummy, don’t make it a horrible old moral story. Her mom even brought in a fairy (仙子), who had made it rain and filled the hole, so that the trout could float away down to the river below. Staring at the moon she knew there was no such thing as a fairy and that trout, down in the tunnel, was panting for his life.

“She needs me.” Those were the exact words I spoke to my husband when I spotted Dottie, a little dog we found at a local shelter eight years ago.
Dottie leaned (倾斜) away when I tried to pet her and refused to let me hold her. While the other dogs jumped and barked, Dottie returned to the back of the cage, curled up in a ball, hoping us to leave her alone.
On the entire drive home, Dottie was in fear. So, upon arrival at our house, we got right to work. I held her as much as possible, touching her head and softly singing in her ear. We learned that she loved belly touch, so every time we passed by, we would offer a gentle touch. Eventually, we noticed her presenting her belly as we walked by her. I knew we were making real progress when I found her quietly sleeping on a chair one day, her head resting on one of my shoes. My heart melted (融化) as I realized she had brought it there because it contained my smell, and she wanted it nearby.
Ever so slowly, our little dog came to life. She began to play with toys, enjoy walks, and rest on our laps. There was no special treatment, no fancy food or toys. All we did was love her. And she grew well. She was so broken when we first met her that we had no idea what her true personality would be. But now we found a sweet, playful, loving soul.
One day, a few years after her adoption, I was busy doing housework around the house, doing laundry and climbing the stairs from the basement up to the main floor. When I finished, I sat down and enjoyed a well-deserved break. That’s when I realized I hadn’t seen Dottie for a while. I called to her and began searching. My heart raced and my pace quickened as I began checking under beds and behind sofa.

Kay Day, an 87-year-old UK woman, loves elephants. But Day, who suffers from dementia(痴呆), rarely leaves her nursing home room and hasn’t seen a real elephant for a really long time. Until now.
Day is so fond of elephants that her room is full of elephant photos and toys. She dreamed of seeing an elephant up close again but never thought it would happen. On Wednesday, August 9, 2023, Day’s dream became a reality after her nursing home took her on a special trip to the Whipsnade Zoo.
The nursing home collected money to be able to realize Day’s dream. “Day doesn’t join in many activities and tends to spend quite a lot of time alone,” said the nursing home manager. “So when we sat and discussed wishes, we found out she would love to see an elephant. When we found the Elephant Experience at Whipsnade and contacted them, we said we should make her dream come true!”
Day was so excited about going to the zoo that she marked off the days on her elephant-themed calendar. Day’s carers telephoned her family and asked them to come along on the trip to support her on that exciting day.
Since the Whipsnade Zoo is a protection zoo that is working to protect wildlife as well as connect people with nature, the staff runs a lot of programs including various animal experiences and “Be a Keeper” days.
Day often told people around her that she would like to pet and feed the elephants herself as she did many years before. And she said that the elephants’ trunks (象鼻) are her favourite part of the huge animals. “It’s such a wonderful feeling to have an elephant take some food out of your hand, put it in his trunk, curl (卷起) it up and put it in his mouth, ” she told the reporter when she was interviewed.

As Alina sat quietly in the patient room, her rive-year-old son, Tony, was lying on her chest. He was suffering from a serious disease and they were staying in the hospital for several days.
Alina’s mind was working overtime. She was worrying about money. She worked as a manager for a retail chain, and it was the busiest time of the year. Alina had already taken almost all her vacation time and knew she would not be paid for the days she was now taking off. Worse still, she had only a couple of hundred dollars in the bank.
But Alina’s main concern washers on. She didn’t know how she would be able to manage, working full-time and looking after him. She was depressed and felt the tears well up and spillover.
And that’s when Lorna arrived. She had been Alina’s assistant. Quickly blinking back the tears, Alina welcomed her in. Lorna came to offer some support and brought a card signed by the office staff. Alina was touched, for she didn’t expect they were thinking of her during a completely crazy workweek. Full of grate fullness, she took the card and discovered there was more. Inside the card was a note, which said, “Dear Alina, we want to help. Each person who has signed this card has donated one vacation day into your account. We know you need to spend some time with your son and we don’t want you to worry about having to take time off without pay.”
So moved by their kindness, Alina was speechless and got quite choked up, tears held back earlier now rolling down her cheeks.
After Lorna left, Alina calmed down. She looked at her son, lost in thought. “Tomorrow is Christmas Day. What shall I do?” Because of several days of bad sleep, drowsily Alina fell asleep.

On a recent weekend in Atlantic City, a woman carried a bucket full of coins to the elevator, She was about to walk into the elevator when she noticed two men already aboard. Both were black. One of them was big and the other was average sized. The woman froze. Her first thought was that the two men were going to rob her. Her next thought was not to be a bigot(顽固者), for they looked like perfectly nice gentlemen. However, fear held her. She stood and stared at the two men. She felt anxious. She hoped they didn’t read her mind, but knew they surely did because her hesitation about joining them on the elevator was too obvious.
She couldn’t just stand there, so she picked up one foot and stepped forward and followed with the other foot onto the elevator.
Avoiding eye contact, she turned around stiffly(僵硬地)and faced the elevator doors as they closed. Several seconds passed, the elevator didn’t move. Her fear increased! Panic consumed her. “I’m trapped and about to be robbed!” she thought.
Then one o£ the men said, “Hit the floor.” Instinct(本能)told her to do what he told her. The bucket of coins flew upwards as she threw out her arms and collapsed(瘫坐)on the elevator carpet. A shower of coins rained down on her.
“Take my money and don’t hurt me,” she prayed. More seconds passed. She heard one of the men say politely, “Ms, if you’ll just tell us what floor you’re going to, we’ll push the button.” The one who said it had a little trouble getting the words out. He was trying to hold in a belly laugh. She looked up at the two men. And they reached down to help her up.
“When I told my friend here to hit the floor,” said the average sized one, “I meant that he should hit the elevator button for our floor. I didn’t mean that you should hit the floor, Ms.”

Once upon a time there was a king who often thought, “Nothing good can come to a nation whose people only complain and expect others to solve their problems.” One day, he had an idea.
Early one morning, the king disguised (伪装) himself and went to a local village. He placed a large stone in the middle of the main street and hid gold coins under the stone. Then he hid behind a huge maple tree and watched.
The first person down the street was a milkman with his cart. He crashed into the stone, pilling the milk everywhere, “What fool put this stone here?” he shouted. He picked himself up and angrily went away.
After a while, a group of women came along, each balancing a pot of water on her head. One woman tripped over (被……绊倒) the stone and her water pot went crashing to the ground. She picked herself up and limped (跛行) away in tears. Neither she nor her friends thought about moving the stone out of the road.
The king watched all day as many people complained (抱怨) about the stone, but he found nobody making an attempt to move it. The king was in despair. “Is there no one in this village who feels any responsibility to keep their neighbours from harm?”
Just then, the king saw a young girl coming along. She was the daughter of a local farmer. She had been working all day and was very tired. But when she saw the stone, she said to herself, “This stone is a danger to anyone who comes down the street after dark. I’ll move it out of the way.”
Paragraph 1:
The girl pushed the stone with all her might (竭尽全力地).
