I decided to apply to the Nottingham Summer School in Food and Crop Science because I thought it could help me expand my knowledge of the industry and determine my career path. Arriving at Sutton Bonington, despite being nervous I was excited to involve myself in the events organised and make new friends.   We were welcomed with lunch and team-building activities helping me feel instantly comfortable.

The first activity took place in the “superlab”, an impressive, brandnew laboratory full of modern equipment which we were able to use in experiments. For people planning to study food science at university it was the perfect introduction, providing continuous tasters of what the course offered.

We learnt about sensory analysis and its importance in food manufacturing. Using specialized equipment, we tested the smell of an Oreo in relation to the taste of it.   Interestingly, the taste and smell of food was strengthened when it was put into the liquid, so we repeated the experiment with an Oreo dunked (浸一浸) in milk. That day we also took part in the ice cream tasting, deciding on our favorite product and packaging, then the Skittles tasting, attempting to establish flavors by looking at their color, then using the limited edition white Skittles and seeing if they were harder.

One of my favorite activities was the talk given on insects and their potential role in sustaining an alternative global protein source for the future. We were given the chance to try some energy/protein bars made with “Jimminy’s”, a new product, inspiring us to then create our own product and pitch our idea and brand to the group. And the best part of the three days was the lecture in which a representative from the Food and Drink Federation spoke about the food industry, followed by a formal dinner.

I would definitely recommend attending if you are considering it. I am now certain I want to pursue a nutrition course at university and follow a career in this industry. It has been an enriching experience strengthening my longterm goal.

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。主要介绍了布谷鸟不会自己筑巢,所以会将蛋产在其他鸟类巢里,从而让它们为自己孵化幼鸟。

【推荐1】Cuckoos (布谷鸟) are masters of cheating. When it comes to raising young, they don’t spend the energy building a nest (鸟巢), protecting eggs or feeding children. Instead the female passes these roles on to other birds. They don’t raise their own young. Usually, they lay their eggs in the nests of other birds, fooling other birds into thinking the cuckoo eggs are theirs.

To succeed in doing this, a female cuckoo watches over her chosen nest to observe feeding times. When the host parent leaves its nest in search of food, the cuckoo quickly lays her eggs among those already in the nest. Sometimes, she will even destroy and remove one of the host’s eggs to make room for her own.

Cuckoos are medium-sized birds with long tails, and often have gray or brown backs. When they hatch(孵化) and begin to grow in a host’s nest, the difference between the two can be obvious to an onlooker. Often the cuckoo is twice the size of its foster parents, but still continues to receive food from them.

The cuckoo imposter (冒名顶替者) is usually the only baby bird that the host parent has to care for. This is because when the cuckoo hatches after around 11 days, it gets rid of all the other eggs in the nest. It will lift each egg onto its back before throwing them one by one over the edge of the nest. Even then, the non-biological parent will continue to treat it as one of its own.

Also, cuckoos have developed to produce eggs that are similar in color to their main hosts’. This reduces the chances of eggs being attacked. Female cuckoos have been known to take host birds’ attention away after laying their eggs by producing a noise similar to Eurasian sparrowhawks, scaring birds away from returning to the nest and allowing time for the cuckoo to make her escape unnoticed.

1. What do mother cuckoos usually do when it comes to raising their young?
A.Attend to eggs.B.Build a new nest.
C.Rely on other birds.D.Learn feeding skills.
2. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Other cuckoos.B.Baby cuckoos.
C.Its host parents.D.Its birth parents.
3. What can be inferred about the cuckoo imposter?
A.It usually hatches out earlier than the other eggs in the nest.
B.It throws all the other eggs out of nests with its mother’s help.
C.It often makes a noise to scare other birds away from the nest.
D.It looks much larger than other eggs in the nest before hatching.
4. Which can be the best title for the text?
A.How cuckoos fool other birdsB.How cuckoos protect their children
C.How cuckoos destroy others’ nestsD.How cuckoos produce eggs in host nests

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了森林对降低全球的气温有一定的作用。

【推荐2】When it comes to cooling the planet, forests have more than one trick upon their trees. A new study finds tropical (热带的) forests help cool the average global temperature by more than 1℃. “The effect is largely from forests’ ability to stockpile CO2. But around one third of that tropical cooling effect comes from several other processes, such as the letting-out of water vapor (水蒸气),” researchers reported on March 24 in Frontiers in Forests and Global Change.

“We tend to focus on CO2 and other greenhouse gases, but forests can not only keep CO2,” said Deborah Lawrence, an environmental scientist at the University of Virginia. “It’s time to think about what else forests are doing for us besides keeping CO2.”

“Researchers already know that forests influence their local climates through various chemical processes. Trees let out water vapor through their leaves and, like human sweating, this cools the trees and the things around them. But on a global scale, it isn’t clear how the other cooling works compared with the cooling provided by forests’ ability of keeping CO2,” Lawrence said.

So she and her colleagues studied how over-cutting would affect global temperatures, using data gathered from other studies. For example, the researchers used data to decide how much the letting-out of CO2 stored by those forests would warm the global temperature. They then compared those results with other studies’ results of how much the loss of other aspects of forests.

The researchers found that in forests at latitudes (纬度) from around 50°S of the equator to 50°N, the primary way that forests influenced the global average temperature was through CO2 store. But other cooling factors still played large roles.

1. What does the underlined word “stockpile” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Improve.B.Explore.C.Store.D.Defend.
2. What can we learn from Lawrence’s words?
A.Forests need CO2 to keep their balance.B.Some chemicals are harmful to forests.
C.Forests can sweat and breathe like humans.D.Forests may benefit us in many other ways.
3. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A.The result of Lawrence’s research.
B.Lawrence’s research method.
C.The difficulty that Lawrence was faced with.
D.The reason why Lawrence studied trees.
4. In which section of a newspaper can the text be found?
A.Nature.B.Technology.C.Culture.D.Sports.

3】A new study led by researchers at the Yale School of Public Health finds air pollution may negatively impact standardized test scores. Using data from the North Carolina Education Research Data Center, the researchers tracked 2.8 million public school students in North Carolina from 2001 to 2018 and measured their exposure to PM2.5 found in polluted air. While previous research has shown negative effects on academic performance, it has relied on relatively small or less representative samples. “The biggest strength of this study is that we tracked every student in North Carolina in those years, for the whole time period that they were in the public schools,” said Emma Zang, coauthor of the study.

The study also finds that test scores of ethnic minorities and girls are disproportionately (不成比例地) impacted by PM2.5 levels. “Females and ethnic minorities face sexism and racism,” said Zang. “There are a lot of policies that are not friendly towards them. So, when they’re exposed to the same level of air pollution, they don’t have the resources to lessen the negative influences.” More privileged populations, however, might have more resources that allow them to live in a better environment, such as in houses with air purifiers.

“The level of PM2.5 pollution in the US is relatively low, but students living in areas below the current air quality standard of annual PM2.5 concentration are still negatively impacted by air pollution when it comes to their test scores,” said Zang. “We should aim to strengthen the annual PM2.5 standard to better protect our children.”

Air pollution is known to contribute to disease and death, and it also negatively affects students’ academic performance even at low levels of pollution. The subsequent studies, the researchers said, would involve looking at whether the findings hold true in different areas, and also the reasons behind the ethnic and sexual differences.

1. What’s the greatest advantage of the study?
A.Tracking each student for 18 years.B.Collecting more comprehensive data.
C.Measuring students’ PM2.5 exposure precisely.D.Building links between air pollution and test scores.
2. According to Zang, ethnic minorities and girls ________.
A.benefit from current policies on PM2.5 pollution
B.have the lowest test scores due to their identities
C.lack resources to reduce the impact of air pollution
D.suffer from educational inequalities owing to their background
3. What’s Zang doing in paragraph 3?
A.Offering a suggestion.B.Raising a doubt.
C.Making a comparison.D.Giving a prediction.
4. What might be the focus of the follow-up studies?
A.Applicability of the findings to other regions.B.Ways to address racial and sexual differences.
C.Long-term impacts of air pollution on children.D.Establishment of PM2.5 standard fit for children.
