Once home to kings and queens, palaces were built not only to act as royal residences (皇家官邸), but to project power. Due to their artistic, cultural and historical value, palaces now make for some of the most popular tourist attractions and museums around. Let’s get close to the most famous four.
Forbidden CitySince it was built in 1406, the Forbidden City has been the center of Beijing, as well as China. Protected by a high wall, the palace holds some 980 different buildings. These show lots of amazing Chinese palatial (宫殿式的) architecture, of which the Hall of Supreme Harmony and Palace of Heavenly Purity are must-see sights. Now it has become the Palace Museum and visitors can enjoy various artworks there.
Winter PalaceOnce the living place of the Russian tsars (沙皇), the Winter Palace now houses the world-famous Hermitage Museum. Built in an Elizabethan Baroque style, its seemingly never-ending green and white walls are said to house over 1.500 rooms, with each of them beautifully decorated. The size of the palace, not to mention the beautiful art and architecture on show, perfectly shows the power of Imperial Russia.
AlhambraLocated on the top of a mountain, Alhambra has long been one of the best-known and recognizable palaces on Earth. Built by the Nasrid sultans in the 13th century, the palace proudly exhibits lots of delicate(精美的) Andalusian architecture, with unique designs and patterns wherever you look. Walking around its gardens is enjoyable, and it will leave you a deep impression.
Palace of VersaillesAlthough Versailles started out as a hunting shelter, it was turned into one of the grandest palaces under Louis XIV. The Sun King decorated and enlarged it, eventually turning it into his royal residence and these at of his government. Many precious artworks were removed and placed in the Louvre following the French Revolution. Now, many repairs have seen the palace returned to its former glory.

Still home to the royal family of Jaipur, this 300-year-old palace has lost none of its grandeur (壮观). The complex of courtyards, gardens and buildings is a mixture of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. Among other things, the thoughtfully decorated museum houses an extensive textile (纺织品) collection, featuring rich fabrics as well as a carpet dating back over 400 years.

Don’t miss the on-site shop. Combine a visit with a trip to the UNESCO-listed Amber Fort, a remarkable walled castle that rises above the city and is only a five-minute ride from the museum.

In our times, we like to think that we can travel whenever and wherever we’d like. However, there are destinations around the globe that are simply off-limits. The reasons for these closures vary.
HEART REEF, AUSTRALIA
Located in Queensland’s Whitsundays, Heart Reef is a heart-shaped formation of coral nestled within Hardy Reef which was first discovered in 1975. As it’s a protected area, no one is allowed to swim or dive near Heart Reef. Luckily, it’s visible from above, so visitors can still take in this romantic natural formation by air.
SVALBARD SEED VAULT, NORWAY
While there are many seed vaults (种子库) around the world, perhaps the best known - and largest - is Norway’s Svalbard Seed Vault. It holds seeds from crops around the world as a safety measure against seed loss. As of June 2021, it held over 1 million different crop samples. The vault itself is closed to the public, thought ours bring groups to visit the entrance.
LASCAUX CAVES, FRANCE
The Lascaux Caves are one of the great treasures of pre-historic art. For about I5 years thousands of visitors a day entered the caves to enjoy the Paleolithic paintings, but by 1963 that had come to an end. The caves were closed to the public because the carbon dioxide generated by all the visitors caused green mold to cover the artwork. Since that time, art historians have worked diligently to restore balance in the caves.
SNAKE ISLAND, BRAZIL
As its name suggests, the island is completely filled with poisonous snakes. One to five snakes per square meter make the island their home, including the lethal Golden Lancehead viper. Native to the island, their venom becomes more poisonous as they mature. Due to their presence on the island, the Brazilian government strictly forbids visitors.
