Most of us probably believe how easy it is to simply walk into a shoe store, get an accurate measurement of our foot size, and leave with a perfectly fitting pair of shoes. That’s not, however, . a luxury (奢侈品) afforded to many in the developing world.
It’s something Idaho native Kenton Lee noticed in 2008 while on business in Africa. There he observed some poor kids wearing ill-fitting, broken, and entirely insufficient footwear, exposing the children to dangerous infections.
Having identified the problem, Lee set out to create a solution. The result is “The Shoe That Grows”. The unique piece of footwear is covered in snaps (摁扣) and button-holes which allow the shoe’s straps (鞋带) to be adjusted to fit an estimated five years’ worth of growth on the part of the wearer. As the Shoe That Grows website points out, each shoe is made using materials that are easy to clean and difficult to break.
The shoes were created through a partnership between Because International, the nonprofit founded by Lee upon his return to Idaho, and Proof of Concept, a footwear product development company. An initial order of 3,000 shoes was filled in late fall of 2014, with The Washington Post reporting that a second shipment of 5,000 shoes was sold in July of the following year, due to a successful crowdfunding campaign to expand the aid operation.
At the core of Because International is a guiding principle of “Practical Compassion”. It’s a phrase seen all over the Shoe That Grows website. As Lee explains, “We believe in creating innovative products that can help people living in extreme poverty around the world and help them in really simple, practical ways.”

Merlin's work was making musical instruments. In his spare time he liked to play the violin. Joseph Merlin was a man of ideas and dreams. People called him a dreamer.
One day Merlin received an invitation to attend a fancy dress ball (化装舞会). He was very pleased and a little excited. As the day of the party came near, Merlin began to think how to make an amazing entrance at the party. He had an idea. He thought he would get a lot of attention if he could skate into the room.
Merlin tried different ways to make himself roll. Finally, he decided to put two wheels under each shoe. These were the first roller skates. Merlin was very proud of his invention and dreamed of arriving at the party on wheels while playing the violin.
On the night of the party Merlin rolled into the room playing his violin. Everyone was very surprised to see him. There was just one problem. Merlin had no way to stop his roller skates. He thought the team could make something to help hard-of- hearing people enjoy live music even more with the technology now available.
Belquer, who is also a musician and theater artist, is now the “Chief Vibrational Officer” of Music: Not Impossible, which uses new technology to address social issues like poverty and disability access. His team started by tying vibrating different cell phone motors to bodies, but that didn’t quite work. The vibrations were all the same. Eventually, they worked with engineers to develop a light haptic (触觉的) suit with a total of 24 vibrating plates. There are 20 of them tied to a vest that fits tightly around the body like a hiking backpack, plus one that ties to each wrist and ankle. When you wear the suit, it’s surprising how it feels.
The vibrations are mixed by a haptic DJ who controls the location, frequency and intensity of feeling across the suits, just as a music DJ mixes sounds in an artful way. “What we’re doing is selecting and mixing what we want and send it to different parts of the body,” said the DJ. The haptic suits were just one component of the event. There were American Sign Language interpreters; the music was captioned on a screen on the stage.
The suits are the star attraction. Lily Lipman, who has auditory processing disorder, lit up when asked about her experience. “It’s cool, because I’m never quite sure if I’m hearing what other people are hearing, so it’s amazing to get the music in my body.”

The Edinburgh-based Durham University chemistry graduate James Longcroft started a non-profit bottled water company two years ago. He wanted to put all his profits into a charity that provided clean drinking water to countries in Africa.
However, after concerns about the environmental impact of plastic bottles, Mr. Longcroft decided the Edinburgh and London-based company, Choose Water, should go plastic-free. So he came up with a new type of water bottle—a waterproof paper bottle.
“The outside is made from recycled paper, but the inside has to be waterproof, and provides strength so the bottle would keep its structure, and keep the water fresh,” Mr. Longcroft said.
When the bottle is thrown in the ocean the degrading process begins within hours leaving the bottle totally degraded (分解)within weeks. The steel cap breaks down within a year.
Mr. Longcroft now believes these novel bottles could revolutionise the industry and says the cost of producing the bottle is around 5 pence more than one made from single-use plastic.
“The main difficulty we face is breaking into a saturated (饱和的)market and competing with an old industry,” he said. “Changing an industry will be a big uphill battle, but with the support from the public, we will change the way we look at bottled water.”
Researchers warn that eight million tonnes of plastics currently find their way into the ocean every year which will stay in the environment for centuries.
“We really want to get our bottles on shelves and into people's hands as soon as possible—if we can stop even one plastic bottle ending up in the environment it will be worth it,” said Mr Longcroft.
1. What is special about the bottle?A.It can be recycled. | B.It is plastic-free. |
C.It purifies sea water. | D.It can be used for food. |
A.To raise money for charity. | B.To keep the water fresh |
C.To reduce ocean pollution. | D.To prompt the sale of bottled water. |

B.They are more costly than plastic ones. |
C.They still lack in the public support. |
D.They take a long time to break down. |
A.Cutting down on plastic pollution. | B.Providing clean water to the public. |
C.Stopping the use of the plastic bottles. | D.Getting people to accept the new bottles. |

According to data recently released by China's National Press and Publication Administration, an average of 2. 8 billion textbooks were delivered to the hands of students and teachers nationwide in the past five years. A majority of those textbooks, however, were sold for scrap (废品),causing an astonishing amount of waste. In this regard, recycling textbooks seems to be a preferable alternative, but many of the individuals still cast doubt on the feasibility (可行,性)of reusing and recycling them. To handle this problem fundamentally, we need to scrap the traditional textbook format and put e-books to good use.
One of the advantages of e-books is that they are compatible across a wide range of terminals, including smartphones, tablets and laptops. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows that more than 65 percent of Chinese people have their electronic devices for personal use, while almost every Chinese adolescent has access to the internet. Therefore, the promotion of e-books is just as easy as delivering paper books.
In recent years, more appealing technologies have emerged and are spreading widely among young people. In 2015, Apple released iPad Pro, which enables students to write on a tablet smoothly with an Apple Pencil. Since then, many of the students in colleges take their iPads to class instead of carrying tons of printed textbooks. All of the test papers and assignment sheets are organized in one single device, and this will definitely increase efficiency in terms of academic activities.
As these technologies become more affordable for households and schools, it is time to reduce the production of printed textbooks and promote the utilization of e-books. Hopefully, the electronic documents will be directly sent to our own digital devices, ridding us of the inconvenience in carrying heavy bags to school and back home.

It begins with each individual family. Within our families we do things to build relationships with each other. This can include routines like daily housework and weekly shopping. It also includes traditions. Traditions are activities that are repeated on a regular basis.
Culture is not limited to individual family groups. The real strength of culture is in larger community (社会)groups. These larger groups are called societies. Every society makes rules for itself. It decides how people should act in different situations. Some of these rules are written down. Some are just things that are automatically expected of all members of that society. Often, cultures can be identified(识别)by what the people believe. Cultures are also known by what they choose to include in their art. Sometimes a society forms around people who speak the same language. Cultures may also be known for their customs, including the foods they make and the things they do.
Our cultures help us understand who we are and what we believe. There are very strong emotions(情感)connecting us to our own society. Two different cultures may disagree on something, especially if they both feel strongly about it. When that happens, war is a common result. People are learning better ways to communicate with each other. The more we learn, the more we appreciate the differences in cultures.

I think it is the largest ancient castle in the world. Prague also has a lot of cultural events, like the World Dance Festival. I went to a ballet (芭蕾舞剧) just last night.

I’ve come to Shanghai at the right time. Summer has begun, but it is not too hot yet. Yesterday was the Dragon Boat Festival. It was exciting! If you come to Shanghai, you should see the Bund---a street with very nice shops, nightclubs, and hotels. There are many tourists there. It has some wonderful buildings from the 1930s.
I went on a night cruise(乘船游览) of the Huangpu River last night. I met some great people on the boat, mostly foreigners, like me.

Buenos Aires is a fun city, but six days is not enough time for a visit! I’m staying near the mile-long shopping street called Calle Florida. It is a great place to meet people and watch dancers perform that tango. Buenos Aires is the birthplace of the tango.
I also spent a day in the suburb of Tigre. It’s about 30 km from the capital, and you can get there quickly by train. However, I chose to take a boat on the canals(运河) of the Paraná Delta.
