It was a sunny day. Sophie and her parents decided to go boating in the park. Sophie was amazed by the calm lake in front of her when she reached the lake. It was so still that it reflected (映出) the clouds above like a mirror. But when Sophie walked excitedly to the shore of the lake, she saw small waves spread out. After a while, the lake became calm again, and the perfect reflection of the clouds returned.
Feeling adventurous, Sophie wanted to discover more about the lake. Her dad saw how excited she was and gave her a life jacket to put on. After they were both ready, they got into a boat to explore the quiet waters. The boatman (船夫) gave her a paddle (船桨) and showed her how to use it. At first, Sophie wasn’t good at using the paddle, but with the help of the boatman, she quickly mastered the technique of rowing.
As they moved further into the lake, they passed over some green and heart-shaped leaves floating on the water. Yellow flowers stood out among the leaves, shining in the sunlight. It looked like something from a beautiful painting.
Then, as they left the area with the flowers behind, a butterfly landed on Sophie’s paddle. “Hi, how beautiful,” she said before it flew away. Sophie tried to paddle softly. “Let’s stay close to the shore,” her dad suggested.
Sophie was excited when she saw a turtle (龟) swimming near them. It had short legs and red and yellow on its neck. “Hi, I’m Sophie. What’s your name? You’ve got four paddles. We only have two,” she told the turtle. She wanted to get a better look, but the turtle swam away. “Was I too loud, Dad? Do you think it’ll come back?” she asked. Her dad just smiled and nodded.

This past summer, my family went on our annual vacation in a cottage on a lake. There were various activities to keep everyone busy: swimming, fishing and building sand castle on the beach. In the evenings, we gathered on the beach, having great fun.
However, by the third day of our vacation, I noticed my sister, Jane, spent most of her time watching videos and looking through online shops indoors. She was so addicted to her cell phone! Over dinner, I told Jane we would hike to the top of the mountain across the lake the following morning. I stared at her, “Put your phone away and enjoy the scenery. It’s really amazing.”
“Well,” Jane shrugged her shoulders and answered unwillingly, “there are some bargains tomorrow in several online shops, so I’ll not be available.”
“Come out to enjoy the fresh air and many views. Hiking is fun!” (嘟囔),“I can not walk that far.”
When I said it only took half an hour of steady walking to climb to the top, she nodded, “OK. I’ll go.”
The next morning was perfect for a hike, with sunny clear skies and gentle winds. I got up early and packed some sandwiches and bottles of water into my backpack along with the camera. Jane came slowly downstairs, and announced in a very unenthusiastic voice, “I’m ready to go, Jim.”
Anyway, we stepped out of our cottage and quite a different view unfolded before our eyes. Against the blue skies, a rough path wound to the top of the mountain across the lake with wild flowers and grass on both sides. The sunlight brightened on the glassy surface of the lake. We began from the path.
“I’m still wondering if this is a good idea, but if you could do it, I could also do.” She complained, frowning.

My day began in a terrible way when I saw my six-year-old struggling with a limb of my azalea(杜鹃花)bush. By the time I got outside, he’d broken it. “Can I take this to school today?” he asked. With a wave of my hand, I sent him off. I turned my back so he wouldn’t see the tears gathering in my eyes.
I had been angry with my husband. The washing machine had leaked, leaving the floor in a mess. If only he had just taken the time to fix it the night before when I asked him instead of playing checkers(跳棋). “Does he still love me?” I wondered, mopping up the mess. Why did I feel anger?
I spent most of the day washing and drying clothes and thinking how love had disappeared from my life. As I finished hanging up the last of my husband’s shirts, I looked at the clock. 2:30. I was late. Jonathan’s class let out at 2:15. So I hurriedly drove to the school.
I was out of breath by the time I knocked on the teacher’s door. She walked through the door and took me aside. “I want to talk to you about Jonathan,” she said.
What? I prepared myself for the worst. Nothing would have surprised me. “Did you know Jonathan brought flowers to school today?” she asked. I nodded, thinking about my favorite bush and trying to hide the hurt in my eyes. “Let me tell you about her yesterday,” the teacher insisted. “See that little girl?” I watched the bright-eyed child laugh and nodded.
“Well, her mother and father are going through a divorce. Yesterday, she told me she didn’t want to live, but that she wished she could die. I watched that little girl bury her face in her hands and say loud enough for the class to hear, ‘Nobody loves me.’ I did all I could to comfort her, but it only seemed to make matters worse.” “I thought you wanted to talk to me about Jonathan,” I said.

Strange Footprints in the Snow
Jonathan woke up and looked around. For a moment, he wasn’t sure where he was. Then he remembered. He and his sister, Julie, were visiting Aunt Gwen. They had spent yesterday helping Aunt Gwen clean her basement. Today they would have time to play.
He looked out the window. Fresh snow covered the ground. He could hardly wait to go outside. Jonathan dressed and hurried downstairs to the kitchen.
“Hi, sleepyhead,” said Aunt Gwen. “Julie has already eaten her oatmeal. She’s outside.”
“That’s where I’m going as soon as I finish breakfast,” Jonathan said.
A short time later, he zipped up his coat, put on his boots, and walked out the front door. The sun made the snow sparkle. He looked around. He didn’t see his sister, but he saw something else. Strange footprints in the snow tracked across Aunt Gwen’s yard.
“They’re way too big to be Julie’s. They look like they belong to a dinosaur,” Jonathan said. Then he added, “But that’s silly. Dinosaurs are not around anymore.”
He looked closer: The footprints were the shape of a very large oval (椭圆) with a stem. “Maybe they belong to an elephant or a hippo that escaped from the zoo,” he thought. He held his breath and listened. He didn’t hear anything.
He remembered a book he’d seen earlier on Aunt Gwen’s shelf. It was a book about animal tracks. He dashed inside to get it. The book had pictures of animals and the tracks they made. He turned the pages one by one, but none of the photos looked like the footprints in Aunt Gwen’s yard.
He stared at those footprints again. An animal that made such big tracks would have to be heavy. Its tracks should sink far down into the snow. Yet these footprints seemed to skim across the top.
How can that be? He wondered.
Jonathan noticed something else. The tracks never left Aunt Gwen’s yard. Instead, they turned and went around the house. “Maybe the animal is still here,” he whispered.

Quietly, he began following the footprints.

A few years ago when I was looking for a small dog to add to our family, I contacted the local SPCA(Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and got the name of a woman who was fostering(领养,代养) some rescued Maltese dogs for them. I called the woman, and my husband and I drove to her home. As I looked around, I noticed a cute Maltese named Casper. My husband and I decided we would like to adopt him.
The foster mom asked us if there were any way we would open our hearts to Casper’s friend, Kato, as well. She told us that the two boys, who had only each other for comfort, had recently been rescued from a puppy farm, where they had spent the first seven years of their lives. When the local SPCA shut down the puppy farm and seized all the dogs, Kato and Casper had been put in her foster home.
She told us that when she first picked them up, their fur was in such terrible shape that they hardly looked like Maltese dogs. They were brown, whose fur was wet and dirty, and their paws were swollen. For seven years, they were locked in a dark doghouse and the only human contact these boys had was when they were thrown their food.
Hearing all this, I turned and looked down at the little Maltese named Kato. But he’s so ugly, I thought. And he isn’t even friendly. He barked angrily when we looked at him. When I reached for him, he pushed himself against the back wall of his doghouse, whispering. Still, I felt a tig at my heart and agreed to take Kato also. As we drove home, my husband and I worried that maybe we’d taken on too much. We’d never had dogs that had been so abused(虐待) for such a longtime.
