The stress of daily life has given rise to a new phenomenon—sleep texting. People with this condition send text messages while asleep to their friends and family—completely _________ that they are doing it.

Sleep specialist Dr. Cunnington, of Melbourne Sleep Disorder Centre in Australia, said patients had reported _________ of sleep texting -and he has advised people to leave their _________ outside the bedroom.

He said, “We have had patients who have reported sending text messages to their friends and family while asleep. It is one of those things that happens, but it is very _________, and certainly not a common trend.”

Unsurprisingly, there are no _________ into sleep texting—but a _________ phenomenon, sleep emailing, was studied in 2008.

Researchers at the University of Toledo reported the case of a woman, 44, who would _________ e-mails while sound asleep. She had no recollection (记忆) of sending the e-mails when she was awake. Dr. Cunnington said cases of sleep emailing were more common, and were likely to have a more _________ effect on the lives of sufferers.

He said, “Emails can be sent to work colleagues and have much more serious _________, whereas text messages are more likely to be __________ sent to a friend or family member, so people aren’t as likely to complain of a problem.”

Dr. Cunnington described sleep texting as the __________ of people having too much to do during waking life. He explained: People are doing so much during a normal day that it can mean that they feel like they’re “on call” even at night.

__________ it’s so easy to receive e-mails constantly, and get notifications (通知) from smartphones, it becomes more difficult for us to ________ our waking and sleeping lives.”

Dr. Cunnington said people __________ to get a quality night’s sleep must realize that the key point is that people need to respect their sleep, and make an effort to __________ at night.

There are two ways in which scientists have gone about this seemingly ________ task. One is to look at their physical behaviour during the various stages of the sleep cycle. The second is to see whether their sleeping brains work similarly to our own sleeping brains.

The story of how we ________ how to look into the minds of sleeping animals begins in the 1960s. Back then, reports began to appear in medical journals describing people acting out ________ in their dreams. This was curious, because during so-called REM sleep(rapid eye movement), our muscles are usually paralysed.

Researchers realised that causing a similar state in ________ could allow them to explore how they dream. In 1965, French scientists Michel Jouvet and J F Delorme found that removing a part of the brainstem, called the pons, from a cat's brain ________ it becoming paralysed when in REM. The researchers called the condition "REM without atonia" or REM-A. Instead of lying still, the cats walked around and behaved aggressively. This hinted they were dreaming of ________ from their waking hours.

________ movement is not the only way of looking into dreams, though. Researchers can now ________ look into the electrical and chemical activities of brain cells in animals while they sleep. In 2007, MIT scientists Kenway Louise and Matthew Wilson recorded the activity of neurons in a part of the rat brain called the hippocampus, a structure known to be involved in the formation and encoding of memories. They first recorded the activity of those brain cells while the rats ran in their mazes. Then they looked at the activity of the very same neurons while they slept. Louise and Wilson discovered similar patterns of firing during ________ and during REM. ________ , it was as if the rats were running the maze in their minds while they were sleeping. The results were so clear that the researchers could infer the rats' precise ________ within their mental dream mazes and map them to actual spots within the actual maze.

Does the behaviour of cats in science experiments actually ________ dreaming? Do rats have any subjective awareness that they' re running their mazes in their minds while they nap? We can say with a reasonable amount of ________ that the physiological and behavioural features of dreaming in humans have now been seen in cats, rats, and other animals. Yet what it's actually like to ________ a dream if you' re not human remains a mystery.

Anyone who wants to master a skill must run through the _______of practice, critical feedback, alteration, and improvement over and over. Some people seem able to concentrate on practicing an activity like this for years and _______their gradual improvement. Yet others find it _______to do this kind of focused, time—consuming work. Why?

The _______may turn on the ability to enter into a state of “flow”, the feeling of being completely involved in what you are doing. Flow states can happen in the course of any activity, and they are most common when a task has well—defined goals and is at a(n) _______skill level, and where the individual is able to _______their performance to clear and immediate feedback.

Flow states turn the boring practice into an autotelic activity that is, one that can be enjoyed for its own sake, rather than as a means to an end or for obtaining some _______reward. Then how can we get into a flow state for an activity that we want to master, so that we enjoy both the _______and the rewards?

Those who most _______entered into flow states had an “autotelic personality”—a quality to seek out challenges and get into a state of flow. While those without such a personality see ________autotelic individuals see opportunities to build skills. Autotelic individuals are receptive, open to new challenges and also persistent. Such people, with an ability to focus on tasks rather than ________, have a great advantage over others in developing their inborn abilities.

________, for those of us who aren’t necessarily blessed with an autotelic personality, there is evidence that flow states can be promoted by environmental factors. In particular, the learning framework advocated by Montessori schools seems to encourage flow states. In Montessori schools, learning comes through discovery rather than direct instruction and students are encouraged to develop individual interests.
