As I was looking for a new flat, I was temporarily staying at a lovely small hotel. Unfortunately, during that time, I was due to participate in an online conference for an entire week. I was stuck inside from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm, the entire duration of the cleaning hours. I figured that I could go those five days without my room being cleaned and it wouldn’t be a problem. I would just put a “Do Not Disturb” sign on my door.

On the second day as I was heading to get breakfast at the hotel, I bumped (撞见) into the cleaning lady named Anna. I asked her if I could give her my rubbish, and I mentioned that I would be working the entire day so she needn’t worry about cleaning my room. She smiled and said it was okay.

The next day, when I returned from my breakfast, my room had already been cleaned. The same happened on the following day. On Friday, I finished my breakfast quicker than usual and the cleaning lady was just heading out. She smiled and said that she was happy that even though I ate quicker than usual, she was still able to finish in time.

I finally realized that all this time, she had been keeping an eye on when I headed for breakfast so she could clean my room. Given that looking for a flat in a new city and working in one of the smallest hotel rooms in London were already very stressful, I was incredibly moved. I thanked Anna and told her that, fortunately, it was the very last day of the conference, but I was very thankful.

The following week, I finally got the keys for my new flat. Excited and grateful for all the help I had received while moving in, I bought a box of chocolates and made my way to the receptionist.

It was Christmas Eve. I was 16 and feeling sad because my dad told me there was not enough money to buy the dress I wanted. We did the housework early that night. So I figured Dad wanted extra time for us to spend together. Instead, he dressed himself again and went outside. “Come on, Elizabeth,” he said eagerly. “Dress yourself warmly! It’s cold outside.”

Outside, I became even more upset. Not only wasn’t I getting the dress, now Dad was dragging me out in the cold. There, in front of the house, already was a big sled (雪橇). Whatever we were going to do wasn’t going to be a quick job. So I unwillingly climbed up and sat next to a big box, the cold already biting at me. We pulled in front of the woodshed (柴棚) and started loading wood into the box. Finally, I asked, “Dad, what are you doing?” “Have you been to Mrs. Clark’s lately?” he asked. Mrs. Clark lived about two miles down the road from us. Her husband had passed away the year before, leaving her with three children to raise on her own.

“Yeah,” I said. “Why?” “I rode by just today,” Dad said. “Little Jake was out digging around in the woodpile (柴火堆), trying to find a few pieces of wood to struggle through the cold winter. They’re out of wood, Elizabeth.” That’s all he said. Then Dad went to the kitchen, fetching a big bag of flour, a side of bacon and something else in a small bag and asking me to load them into the big box too. I tried to think through what my dad was doing. We did have a big woodpile, meat and flour, so we could spare some, but I knew we didn’t have any money. Mrs. Clark had closer neighbors than us. Why was it our concern? Nearly half an hour later, we made it to her house.

Kindness of Strangers

We rely on a community where helping others is highly appreciated. When we need help, it creates a web that ties us together.

Years ago, I was in the kitchen getting dinner ready when my fourteen-year-old daughter, Cassandra, called me from her room. “Mom, can you help me get downstairs?”She had lung disease and depended on oxygen(氧气) twenty-four hours a day, so it was impossible for her to move up and down the stairs without help. I turned down the stove and ran upstairs to her room. Cassandra let out a sigh and closed her eyes.

“Mom, I wish it wasn’t so hard for me to climb the stairs. “

“I know, honey. We’ll try to solve the problem. “

A month earlier, a company introduced an electric stairlift (座椅电梯). My daughter could use this stairlift to go up and down stairs by herself without anyone helping her. Hearing the perfect product, our whole family was very excited and looking forward to it. The stairlift sounded wonderful because it would greatly improve my daughter’s life. Unluckily, we couldn’t afford it although John, my husband, even took two jobs to support the family.

So I decided to ask the local charity organization for help once again. They had lent us a wheelchair before we bought one. Maybe they could help with a stairlift, too. Gathering all my courage, I dialed the number of the charity organization. “This is Cassandra’s mother. Do you have a stairlift I could borrow?” I asked them hopefully. They hadn’t, but they promised to telephone us right away as soon as they got one. Then began our long wait.

It was 11 p. m. when Alex saw the woman on the Main Street Bridge. She was standing by the railing (栏杆),looking down at the rushing river below. Maybe she was fishing, Alex thought. He continued driving to his home a short distance away. His friend’s car had broken down, so Alex was going home to get some tools before heading out to help. Tools in hand, he climbed into his car. Instead of taking a shortcut, though, he chose to head back over the bridge.

Something about that woman didn’t sit right. Why would she be fishing this late at night in May,when it was still cold in this city? As he crossed the bridge, Alex saw the woman standing in the same spot. He pulled a U-turn and parked his car with the hazards (警示灯) flashing, blocking one of the four lanes (车道). In case there was trouble, he hoped another driver would take note and help. He stepped out of his car and got a clearer picture of the scene. The woman was in her 20s, dressed in pants and a heavy coat. She was crying while saying something. Alex didn’t know exactly what was going on, but he knew exactly he should do something to help.

“Hey, what’s going on?”Alex called out while approaching. The woman didn’t answer or turn around. Alex stepped closer and stood with the woman side by side.

“What’s going on?”he asked again. The woman kept silent for a while before she told Alex, but mostly talked to herself that she was going through a particularly tough period. She was jobless, not doing well in everything. In short, life wasn’t working out as she’d hoped. “Not everything goes as planned,” agreed Alex. He started talking about the ups and downs he’d faced in his life.

Then without warning, the woman climbed onto the railing.
