Eli, a passionate high school student about environmental conservation, was eager to participate in the annual Science Fair, an event where students showcase their science projects to the audience, and make a significant contribution. However, he struggled with self-doubt, uncertain if he could create a project that would truly stand out.

Fortunately, Eli’s advisor, Mr. Keats, a man in his 40s known for his enthusiasm and willingness to assist, recognized his hesitation and offered guidance and support. He saw potential in Eli and encouraged him to pursue his passion for environmental conservation. With Mr. Keats’s help, Eli gradually gained confidence in his abilities.

Eli’s friends, Joey and Marylin, also played a crucial role in his journey to success. Both grew up in the neighboring area, attended the same school, and shared Eli’s dedication to environmental conservation. Together, they brainstormed ideas and provided emotional support, keeping Eli motivated and focused on his project.

As the Science Fair drew nearer, Eli invested all his energy into creating a project that would raise awareness about environmental conservation. With Mr. Keats’s guidance and his friends’support, Eli overcame his lack of confidence and came up with a fantastic idea of a remarkable project.

However, just when Eli thought everything was going smoothly, he encountered a setback. His initial project idea faced unexpected challenges, and worse still, Eli didn’t have a plan B. Doubts and frustration resurfaced, posing a threat to his progress. Joey and Marylin noticed Eli was in low spirits and asked him what had happened. Frustratedly, Eli told them about the project, adding that maybe he would never make it. Immediately, they understood that Eli needed more than just words of encouragement; he needed support and a community to lean on. Without hesitation, they offered their shoulders to lean on and ears to listen.

During this difficult time, Mr. Keats also offered his support and encouraged Eli to view the setback as an opportunity for growth and innovation. This encouragement fueled Eli’s determination. With their help, Eli regained his confidence and determination to overcome the obstacles in his path.

The winter of 1933. All around us was rough reality. Lots of folks found themselves penniless. But life went on.

New Year was almost upon us. One day Mr. Breiten, our teacher, had a bright idea to cheer us up. With a big smile he proudly announced a gift exchange game. We each pulled a slip of paper with a name on it.

Maxine had selected Fleener. Hilde’s name was on my slip of paper. My mom was a genius with a needle and thread, and I knew she’d sew something up. When we figured out who had my name, I about fainted. It was Betsy! Her family was poorer than the rest of us. “What am I going to do, Maxine, when my name is called? Stand up there looking stupid while everyone is watching me? That Betsy should not even have taken a name!”

Finally the date for the big program arrived. When I reached Maxine’s house to meet her, her mother called us to see what Maxine’s aunt had sent. A pair of red gloves was out on the table. “Oh,” Maxine screamed with delight. “Look at the angels!” She pulled off her worn brown gloves and slipped her hand into the new one.

“Snow angel gloves,” she breathed. “Oh, Delores. Look!”

“I’ve never seen anything so beautiful in my whole life,” I sighed. Well, I was happy for Maxine, but the sight of those gloves made me feel even sorrier for myself.

Then the gift exchange began. One name was called and then another. Kids jumped up, laughing happily. When Hilde’s name was called, I fished in my pocket for the little doll Mom had made.

“Betsy,” Mr. Breiten called. I saw Betsy stand up hesitantly. Then Maxine stood up!

I caught Maxine’s arm. “You have Fleener,” I reminded her. “I traded with him,” she whispered as she walked over and handed her gift to Betsy. Betsy carefully unfolded the package. My eyes popped out. Maxine’s red snow angel gloves lay in Betsy’s palms. She was speechless, and tears began to fill the corners of her eyes. She murmured her thanks and sank down into her chair. “Maxine!” I whispered. I searched her eyes, and she looked back at me with that steady way she had. “Betsy didn’t have any gloves.”

When Gloria Estefan started primary school, she could not read, write nor speak English. She felt lost, unhappy and completely frightened. However, someone changed her life—her English teacher, Mrs Collins. Her family had left Cuba in 1959 when she was only a year old in the hope of finding a better life in America. Initially they moved to Miami where the family settled in a set of apartments with other Cuban women and children who had immigrated.

The women were close-knit and supportive. While she felt safe, she was also isolated. They all spoke Spanish, and she rarely heard English. On her very first day in school, which she was looking forward to, she was completely shocked. She came home and told her mother that she had learnt her first English word “stupid”. It was the nickname a boy had given her.

In every way possible, she was set apart from her classmates. She was the only panic and non-white student. She also found it difficult to grasp the English language as it was her second language. The culture, her school friends and the food they ate were different from hers. As such, she was set apart from her classmates.

One person made that year bearable for her, Mrs Collins. She was young and African American, so she understood how Gloria felt as she was the only non-white student in class. Mrs Collins never doubted that Gloria could catch up with the other students in time.

Still, the teasing continued. The boy who called her stupid would not stop laughing at her for her accent. He was a good student and the proud holder of the class’s reading award. It was an honour given periodically to a student, based on excellence in schoolwork, participation and homework. Gloria wanted that long-waited award.

I always cherished my working experience as a teacher, as I learned a lot from my dear students, those little kids yet full of wisdom, which helped me a lot in my later life.

When I worked in a primary school, Friday afternoon was our school-wide sports program finale (尾声) in the gym. The finale was a series of races and games. There were jump rope relays, basketball relays, soccer relays, minute-to-win-it games and a host of other challenges for my first graders. There were balls escaping, jump ropes tangling (缠绕), and the first graders clapping and cheering each other on with abandon.

One of the hardest games was a basketball shooting game. Each kid stood at a line and shot five baskets. This was a very hard task for first graders. That basket might as well have been in the clouds. One of my darling little girls was chosen for this game.

She was an adorable kid. When she got excited about something, her blue eyes opened wide and she waved her arms. I’d seen her act like this when reading her favorite books, when mastering particularly difficult math problems, when playing after class and especially when she painted.

She stood at the line, basketball in hand, with a serious expression on her face. She shot. Air ball. She scrunched up (皱起) her face in concentration and shot again. Air ball. Her third and fourth shots went through the air and again fell short. Not one of her five shots even came close to the net. Not a single one.

Poor little kid! I felt sorry for her, but didn’t find a chance to comfort her during the finale.

Back in the classroom, those kids were still in excitement. After the conclusion of the sports program, we decided to gather together to talk about all the fun we’d had.

Unexpectedly, my tiny air baller raised her hand, “Mrs. McCauley, I want to share!”

What? What did she want to share? She got five air balls! She must have got me wrong.

Then, she said, “I was nervous about that basketball game at first because I’d never played it before.” She paused. Immediately, I searched in my mind for words of encouragement or some advice, anything, to ease the pain of all those air balls.

However, she continued with her arms waving in wild excitement, “But then I played the game and I was awesome at it!”
