Little Ashley had just gotten home from the annual fair with her dad and her grandma. Dad and Grandma were sitting in the yard, chatting happily. I first played ping-pong in our basement (地下室) at home. My brother and I asked for an old wooden table from my grandfather. It was painted green. Although it was very simple, it served its purpose every day. My father never really played any other sports with me, but ping-pong was one that he played quite well and it took me plenty of time before I could beat him. My elder brother was also a very good competitor.
When I got to university, I was happy to discover a ping-pong table in the common room. I spent a great deal of time there, often until the midnight. There were about three or four friends that I often played against. We were all at the same skill level. One of them had ever played in a tournament (锦标赛). A friend from Germany said his father had ever won the German national tournament. We took part in a tournament. My ranking (名次) is the third place, but I had beaten the first and second place winners when we had played for fun. I sometimes played with other friends who didn’t play ping-pong well, so I would use my left hand to give them an advantage. But before long I became so skilled with my left hand that they no longer had the advantage.
Later, I played in a ping-pong competition which was held by my university. I lost at first. But because it was double climination (双淘汰制), I went to the loser group. I beat all the players and then played against the student who had beaten me in the first round. Surprisingly, I beat him 3 times and won the competition.

I smiled and nodded, since I didn’t have enough breath to answer. I was exhausted but I had to walk slowly around so my muscles wouldn’t tighten up.
A few minutes later, Coach Setlich found me resting on the high-jump mats. She looked worried. “Denise, I need you to run the relay. Tracy pulled a muscle in the long jump.”
I pushed up onto my elbows. “I’m not a sprinter.”
“Not the sprint relay. The medley (混合接力). I want you to run the last leg (赛程) . Amanda and Cindy, each one hundred meters. Megan ,two hundred meters, one lap (圈).”
I looked at her with horror. “You want me to run four hundred meters again?” I screamed.
She nodded. “We have a shot at second or third in the team standings if your relay does well.” the coach’s eyes glowed. Second place may not sound exciting, but we had been near the bottom of the standings all season. Now in the league championships, we were definitely showing improvement. It was the end of his senior football season, and as he ran onto the practice field shortly before the final game, the coach met him with a telegram. The young man read the telegram and he became deathly silent. Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, “My father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today?”The coach put his arm gently around his shoulder and said, “Take the rest of the week off, son, and don't even plan to come back to the game on Saturday.”

Embers (灰烬) were already falling down on them. So Lani got her mom into the car. But then the traffic already stood still. Then she saw another fire beside them on a whole house. Lani thought they were going to die in the car.
Lani and her mom determined the only way out of the fire’s path was to get out of their car and climb over a nearby seawall, into the ocean water.
That escape route, though, proved too difficult as Sincerity has trouble walking and uses a walker for assistance.
As Lani and Sincerity was thinking what to do, a man, a complete stranger, came to their aid.
The man, later identified as Benny Reinicke, told Sincerity to lean on his back so that he could carry her over the seawall and into the water.
He said, “Auntie, put your weight on me. I got you there.”
Reinicke carried Sincerity on his back over the seawall, and then stayed with Sincerity and her daughter in the ocean water for over eight hours as they waited for the fires to die out.
“I just kept thinking to myself, like, this is a young guy that could have just left. He could have swum around to safety, leaving us behind,” Lani said. “But he didn’t. He stayed with us the whole entire time and made sure that all of us were safe.”
After they made it out of the ocean to safety, Lani and Sincerity lost touch with Reinicke.
When everything came to normal, Sincerity told her daughter that they should find Reinicke and say thank you to him. Lani tried her neighborhood for some information about Reinicke but she found nothing.

On the eve of Sweet Serenity’s closure, Sarah sat alone in the empty bakery, tears streaming down her face. She had poured her heart and soul into this place, only to see it slip away. “How could I possibly find a solution to save my bakery? Is there anyone who can give me a hand?” she thought to herself.
But then, a cheerful sound caught her ear. It was the sound of laughter and music floating in from the street outside. Curious, Sarah looked through the window to see a crowd gathering around a food truck parking across the street.
It was a new addition to the neighborhood, a mobile bakery called “The Rolling Oven”. The owner, a young woman named Mia, was handing out samples of her tasty cupcakes and engaging customers with her infectious enthusiasm.

Please call us right away” and she printed our phone number on the bottom. “Okay, Darrell,” she said, as she handed over those signs, “now go post these on all the street posts.”
