A private American organization called Population Action International did the new study. It says more than three-hundred-thirty-five-million people lack enough water now. The people live in twenty-eight countries. Most of the countries are in Africa or the Middle East.
P-A-I researcher Robert Engelman says by the year 2025, about three-thousand-million people may lack water. At least 18 more countries are expected to have severe water problems. The demand for water keeps increasing. Yet the amount of water on Earth stays the same.
Mr. Engelman says the population in countries that lack water is growing faster than in other parts of the world. He says population growth in these countries will continue to increase.
The report says lack of water in the future may result in several problems. It may increase health problems. Lack of water often means drinking waters not safe. Mr. Engelman says there are problems all over the world because of diseases, such as cholera, which are carried in water. Lack of water may also result in more international conflict. Countries may have to compete for water in the future. Some countries now get sixty percent of their fresh water from other countries. This is true of Egypt, the Netherlands, Cambodia, Syria, Sudan, and Iraq. And the report says lack of water would affect the ability of developing to improve their economies. This is because new industries often need a large amount of water when they are beginning.
The Population Action International study gives several solutions to the water problem. One way, it says, is to find ways to use water for more than one purpose. Another way is to teach people to be careful not to waste water. A third way is to use less water of agriculture.
The report also says long-term solutions to the water problem must include controls on population growth. It says countries cannot provide clean water unless they slow population growth by limiting the number of children people have.

What is veganism? The term ”vegan“ was coined in 1944 by a small group of vegetarians who broke away from the term ”Vegetarian“ to form the Vegan Society.
The term ”vegan“ was chosen by combining the first and last letters of ”vegetarian“. Veganism is currently defined as a way of living that attempts to exclude all forms of animal exploitation and cruelty, be it from food, clothing, or any other purpose.
Why do people go vegan? Vegans generally choose to avoid animal products for one or more of the following reasons.
Ethical vegans strongly believe that all creatures have the right to life and freedom.
Some people choose veganism for its potential health effects. For example, plant-based diets may reduce your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and premature death. Lowering your intake of animal products may likewise reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease or dying from cancer or heart disease. Some also choose veganism to avoid the side effects linked to the antibiotics(抗生素)and hormones(激素)used in modern animal agriculture. Finally, studies consistently link vegan diets to a lower body weight and body mass index(BMI)so as to lose weight.
A.Therefore, they oppose ending a conscious being’s life simply to consume its flesh, drink its milk, or wear its skin—especially because alternatives are available. |
B.People may choose to go vegan for a variety of reasons, including ethical, health, and environmental concerns. |
C.What’s more, ethical vegans may demonstrate their opposition by protesting, raising awareness, and choosing products that don’t involve animal agriculture. |
D.They chose not to consume dairy, eggs, or any other products of animal origin, in addition to refraining from meat, as do vegetarians. |
E.People may also choose to avoid animal products because of the environmental impact of animal agriculture. |
F.Vegetarian is a lifestyle that excludes all animal products and attempts to limit the exploitation of animals as much as possible. |

They are part of a popular personality test called the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI. All of the results have four letters, and there are 16 results in total. “I” and “E” refer to “introverted” and “extroverted”, respectively.
Even if someone is typically quiet, many online discussions suggest that an “I” person can still be outgoing at times. For example, when an introverted person is with a group of introverted friends, they might become more social like an “E” person.
According to psychologists, this idea of temporarily switching personalities is called “masking”. That is hiding your true personality in specific situations. “Human beings want to feel they belong, and they might become people-pleasers to do so,” wrote the Master Class website.
Using the MBTI result to identify and describe someone’s personality seems fun. However, I went too far at one time. My sister was excitedly making a day-to-day travel plan when I remembered from an article that “P people” don’t like to make or stick to plans, so I said to her, “You don’t seem like a ‘P person’.” “Why?” She asked back. “Since when do I need to follow what my personality test tells me to do?” It was then that I realized I’d taken the result too seriously.
The MBTI personality test may show something you don’t know about yourself and can even be a fun ice-breaker question when meeting new friends. And that’s all it is —for fun. On the other hand, knowing someone’s MBTI result doesn’t mean you really know this person. And those four letters of yours don’t define who you are.
1. In which of the following situations an “I” person may perform more sociably?A.Having a conversation with an “E” person. |
B.Wanting to feel someone’s sense of belonging. |
C.Taking the personality test and accepting its result. |
D.Staying with some friends with similar personalities. |
A.Pleasing. | B.Escaping. | C.Pretending. | D.Controlling. |
A.The MBTI result is of great help to identify a person. |

No aliens have been found yet. But it’s a big universe. Scientists have found thousands of planets orbiting other stars. And there may be billions of other worlds still to be discovered. Some may even have moons that can support life. Over the last 60 years, scientists have hunted only a tiny bit of it for interstellar (星际的) messages.
Some people think we’d have a better chance of meeting aliens if we introduce ourselves. In other words, send our own messages into space. But other scientists say this is a bad idea. We might not want to advertise our existence to unfriendly aliens.
There may also be aliens that aren’t able to send or read messages. Some planets may be home to simple, even tiny life forms. To find those worlds, scientists look for new worlds in the place suitable to live. This is the area around a star where a planet would be just warm enough to have liquid water. That’s important because water is essential for all known life.
A planet may not have to look just like Earth, though, to be a good home for aliens. Some hardy creatures on our own planet grow strong and tall in seemingly unlivable conditions. Some microbes (微生物) live on the deep seafloor. Learning about these microbes broadens our view of what places in the universe might be livable.
The question of whether we are alone in the universe has captured people’s imaginations for thousands of years. And the answer has two equally exciting possibilities. In outer space, either we are completely alone—or we are not.
1. What can be inferred from the second paragraph?A.Aliens have been found up to now. | B.The universe has a lot to be discovered. |
C.There can’t be aliens on other planets. | D.No messages have been received from outer space. |

Arapakis, whose family had plied (定期往来) the waters near Athens for five generations, pulled the can out of the net and turned it over to look at the sell-by date stamped on the bottom —1987, seven years older than him. It had been in the Mediterranean for almost three decades.
Every day, the fishing boat — and thousands just like it on the crystalline Mediterranean — caught old bottles, plastic foam, flip-flops and other detritus (碎屑) in its nets. And every day, its crew tossed everything back into the undulating waters, only hauling back what would bring cash.
So Arapakis, now 28, had an idea: he would try to convince the fishing industry to treat plastic as a catch. In 2016, he launched a nonprofit focused on sea cleanup and fishing education called Enaleia, a play on Greek words that calls to mind sustainable fishing. Once the fishers brought the plastic ashore, he would recycle it and pay them for their trouble. Six years into the project, he has signed up more than half of Greece’s large-scale fishing fleet — hundreds of ships — to pull in the plastic they gather as they spy the Mediterranean. He plans to keep expanding globally.
This year, after Arapakis spread his efforts across Greece and much of Italy, he expects to gather nearly 200 tons of plastic — enough to fill a football field five feet high with tiny pieces of plastic. That’s more than 7,500 pounds of plastic every week. And others have taken notice: the United Nations Environment Program named him a Young Champion of the Earth in 2020 — its highest environmental honor for people under 30.
“If we hadn’t taken action, we would have had that plastic floating around the Mediterranean forever,” Arapakis said. At the beginning, convincing fishermen to join was painstaking work, requiring a lot of face time in unfamiliar villages. It wasn’t easy: The industry doesn’t always cotton to environmentalists, since many fishermen think the global plastics activists want to take away their livelihoods.

The report stated that this past decade was the hottest in 125,000 years and that the atmospheric carbon levels are the highest in at least 2 million years. Glaciers are melting faster than any time in over 2,000 years, and ocean levels are rising at twice the rate since 2006.
At the current pace, the researchers expect global temperatures to rise by at least 1.5°, compared to pre-industrial levels, within the next 20 years. The temperature increases will result in significant changes to the planet’s water cycle. Areas that currently receive a lot of rain will get significantly more, while dry regions will become increasingly likely to droughts.
The IPCC’s findings come as no surprise to the millions of people worldwide currently feeling the impacts of climate-related disasters. America and many European countries are battling wildfires. Meanwhile, an unprecedented (史无前例的) week-long storm in July 2021 caused flash floods and mudslides in Western Europe. Climate change is even impacting the Earths coldest and most remote regions which experienced the first rainfall event in recorded history.
The situation may sound hopeless. However, many experts believe it is still not too late to turn things around, if we all act now. While governments need to do their share by introducing and obey stricter carbon emission laws, individuals can also help. Driving less, conserving water, and reducing electricity usage are some great ways to start. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle will help conserve natural resources and energy. It will also save you and your community. Be sure to start doing your part to save our beautiful home today!

We all have different styles of approaching conflict. Some of us avoid, others compete, give in,adjust or cooperate. Each of these styles has its strengths and weaknesses. So it’s important to know how you approach conflict. Remember that blaming others and refusing to take responsibility for your role in a conflict can only worsen the conflict and lead to more anger, frustration (挫折),or fear. On the other hand, making the effort to listen without judgement, trying to understand the other party's needs, and searching for solutions in which everyone wins lead to healthy conflict resolution and may result in positive change. If you find that you can't work it out with the other person, you may want to seek the help of a neutral party, to help you work through the conflict.
Whether you use the services of a third-party mediator or negotiate a solution between yourselves, the following principles are important to constructive conflict resolution: address the conflict before it becomes much more complex; separate the person from the problem; focus on interests rather than sticking to your position; commit to finding a mutually (相互地)beneficial outcome; avoid blaming others; listen actively; keep the lines of communication open; focus on the future.
Be aware of the possibility that you may just have to agree to disagree. Not all conflicts can be resolved. For most people, values are negotiable and they are not always in line with the values of others. In a diverse community like we have now, we must accept and be respectful of difference.
1. What would be the best title for the passage?A.How to Resolve Conflict. | B.Different Ways for Conflict. |

When outstanding U.S government leaders described their most difficult decisions, they reported struggling not with complex problems, but with choices that required courage. And new research led by Professor Scott Sonenshein indicates that even the most dedicated environmentalists wrestle with constant uncertainty about whether they can succeed in their mission. Choosing to challenge the status quo(现状)is an uphill battle, and there are bound to be failures, barriers, and setbacks along the way.
Psychologist Julie Norem studies two different strategies for handling these challenges: strategic optimism and defensive pessimism. Strategic optimists think about the best, staying calm and setting high expectations. Defensive pessimists expect the worst, feeling anxious and imagining all the things that can go wrong. If you're a defensive pessimist, about a week before a speech you convince yourself that you're doomed to fail. Most people assume it's better to be a strategic optimist than a defensive pessimist. Yet Norem finds that although defensive pessimists are more anxious and les confident in analytical, verbal and creative tasks, they perform just as well as strategic optimists.
"Defensive pessimism is a strategy used in specific situations to manage anxiety, fear, and worry,” Norem explains. When self-doubts go in, defensive pessimists don't allow themselves to be crippled by fear. They deliberately imagine a disaster scene to intensify their anxiety and convert it into motivation. Once they`ve considered the worst, they are driven to avoid it, considering every relevant detail to make sure they don't crash and bum, which enables them to feel a sense of control. Their anxiety reaches its peak before the event, so that when it arrives, they're ready to succeed. Their confidence springs not from ignorance or delusions about the difficulties ahead, but from a realistic judgment and an exhaustive plan. When they don't feel anxious, they may become pride; when encouraged, they become discouraged from planning. If you want to weaken the performance of chronic defensive pessimists, just make them happy.

The findings were published by JAMA Internal Medicine. A total of 6, 489 people who were at least 52 years old joined in 2010 or 2011 and were then tracked for an average of 99 months. When they entered the study, they were asked this simple question, “How old do you feel you are?”
Although the average true age of the volunteers was 65. 8 years old, their average self-recognized age was only 56. 8 years old. The feeling that one’s age is lower than one’s chronological age was very common in the study. Fully 69. 6 percent of the volunteers felt at least three years younger while only 4. 8 percent felt more than one year older. The remaining 25. 6 percent felt “about their actual age”.
A total of 1, 266 of the volunteers died during the course of the study, but those deaths weren’t equally spread among all three groups. The mortality rate (死亡率) among those who felt older than their true age was 24. 6 percent, compared with 18. 5 percent for those who felt their age and only 14.3 percent for those who felt much younger.
The researchers also took into consideration various factors that might explain the connection between feeling older and the increased risk of near-term death. With all of these things taken into consideration, they still found that the risk of death during the course of the study was 41 percent higher for the people who felt older than for the people who felt younger.
“People who feel older than their actual age could be targeted with health messages encouraging positive feelings,” the study authors wrote.
1. In the study, researchers simply asked volunteers about ____________.A.their actual age | B.their self-recognized age |
C.their feelings about life | D.their opinions about aging |
A.unexpected | B.favorite | C.golden | D.true |
