Money has always complicated our social lives. A question in October from a woman wondering whether she should attend her neighbors’ holiday parties broke my heart: “I am not able to do the same in return, and I just feel like a freeloader to do so,” she wrote. “I’m not even in a position this year to take an appropriate thankyou gift with me.” I told her to go, of course.
Meanwhile, hosts worried about the costs of entertaining — the hosts who write to me, anyway. On the other hand, the hosts that guests write to me about have taken some extreme measures to reduce the cost of their hospitality. These range from a dinner party where a relative of the host explained how expensive the steaks were and “rather pointedly suggested” that the letter writer “make a financial contribution” to the cost of dinner, to some Cape Cod homeowners who invited a couple to spend a weekend with them — as long as they brought their own food, bottled water, and toilet paper.
Weddings and other special events always create extra sources of stress, worsened by the fact that people rarely want to talk honestly about their money situations. One couple chose to have only a civil wedding ceremony for financial reasons and wondered how to tell people this without going into too much detail. A sixtysomething couple needed to cut back on Christmas gifts to their children but weren’t sure how to tell them about it. People who had been laid off wondered how to notify friends, respond to inquiries about their job search, and compete with former colleagues for positions.
If you are searching for the answers to them, write to me—an advice columnist.

文章大意:本文为一篇记叙文。文章叙述了作者在上班途中帮助他人的一个故事。

【推荐1】It was a terribly rainy wet winter day. While I was wandering in the library after getting my university applications (申请) for the next year at the end of my lunch break, a man was walking towards me with two huge boxes of brochures (小册子).

I thought, “What on earth is that man trying to do? Carry all those things? ” Then all of a sudden he dropped them all! It was a terrible mess with hundreds of brochures all over the path in front of me! “Oh,   no,” I thought. The man sat down and started trying to pick all of the brochures up. I couldn’t believe how many people passed by without even caring at all.

I thought, “I’m not going to be one of those people who don’t care about this man. I’m going to help him.” So, even though it was the end of my lunch break from work and I would be late if I stopped to help him, I didn’t mind. If I explained what happened, I was sure my boss wouldn’t mind too much. So, I helped him pick them all up. Then I asked if he would like a hand in carrying a box to where he went. He said yes gratefully.

I carried one of the heavy boxes. The box I had to carry was very heavy—as I’m quite a petite (娇小的) girl but I didn’t complain. I just helped him with a big smile across my face. We got there and he thanked me very much for helping him out. He also gave me one of these lovely brochures about all the walks in and around the Bay of Plenty.

What is a better way to spend my lunchtime than helping someone? Luckily, I wasn’t even that late back to work, so nobody minded at all!

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了与老人沟通需要掌握的几个技巧。

【推荐2】Communicating with the elderly can often be challenging. However, there are techniques you can use.

Be aware of the person’s health issues. Older adults may have health problems that add difficulty to speaking and understanding.     1     For example, they may have hearing problems, speech problems, and memory loss. These factors complicate communication.

Pay attention to the environment in which you are communicating. Be sure to evaluate the environment in which you are communicating, which might have an effect on hearing and speech problems. Is there any disturbing background noise? Are many people speaking in the same room?     2     If you sense any disturbance, try to move to a more peaceful and quiet location.

3     Older adults may have trouble hearing. Direct your speech at the individual’s face—not to their side. Do not eat your words: move your mouth and pronounce each word carefully and precisely.

Adjust your volume appropriately. Learn to adapt your voice to the needs of the individual. Evaluate the environment and how it relates to the person’s hearing abilities.       4     Treat the individual with respect by articulating and speaking at a comfortable volume that is suitable for both of you.

Take it slow, be patient, and smile. A sincere smile shows that you are understanding. It also creates a friendly environment in which to communicate. Remember to pause between sentences and questions. Give the individual an opportunity to understand and digest information and questions.     5

A.Employ visual aids, if possible.

【推荐3】I was born at Blunderstone, in Suffolk, in the east of England, and was given my poor father’s name, David Copperfield. Sadly, he never saw me and died six months before I was born. My early childhood was extremely happy, as my beautiful mother and kind Peggotty took care of me. But when I was about eight, a shadow passed over my happiness. My mother often went out walking, in her best clothes, with a gentleman called Mr Murdstone. He seemed to be very fond of my mother. But I knew that Peggotty did not like him.

A few months later Peggotty told me that my mother was going to have a short holiday with some friends. Meanwhile Peggotty and I would go to stay with her brother Daniel in Yarmouth,on the east coast, for two weeks. I spent a wonderfully happy two weeks there, playing all day on the beach with Emily, and sleeping in my own little bed on the ship. I am sure I was in love with little Emily in my childish way, and I cried bitterly when we had to say goodbye at the end of the holiday.

But on the way home to Blunderstone, Peggotty looked at me very worriedly. ‘she said suddenly in a trembling voice.‘I must tell you—While we’ve been away, your dear mother—has married Mr Murdstone! He’s your stepfather now!’

I was deeply shocked. I could not understand how my mother could have married that man. And when we arrived home, I went straight to my room and lay sobbing on my bed, which made my poor mother very unhappy too. As she sat beside me, holding my hand, Mr Murdstone suddenly came in.

What’s this, Chara, my love?’ he asked sternly. ‘Remember, you must be firm with the boy!I’ve told you before, you’re too weak with him!’ And when mother left the room, Mr Murdstone whispered angrily to me, ‘David, do you know what I’ll do if you don’t obey me?I’ll beat you like a dog!’ I was still very young, and I was very frightened of him. If he had said one kind word to me, perhaps I would have liked and trusted him, and my life would have been different. Instead, I hated him for the influence he had over my dear mother, who wanted to be kind to me, but also wanted to please her new husband.

1. According to the passage, what ended David’s happy childhood?

A.Serious.B.Humorous.
C.Sad.D.Regretful.
3. How did David think about Mr.Murdstone?
A.Strict and firm.B.Sensible and caring.
C.Gentle and helpful.D.Mean and unkind.
4. According to the passage, what’s most likely to be mentioned in the follwing part?
A.Peggotty’s help to David.B.Mr.Murdstone’s cruelty to David.
