A study took a closer look at music in sports. Researchers asked 150 volunteers to throw a ball into a basket. For the first phase of the study, participants threw the ball from a fixed point. They threw the ball while listening to music of their choices, while not listening to music, or while listening to music the researcher selected. For the second phase, they were able to choose where to stand, when throwing the ball and performed the same activity with the different music choices.
The study found that listening to music, whether it was music of the volunteers’ choice or a song chosen for them, didn’t make the participants more or less likely to get the ball in the basket. What it did do was make the participants more likely to take risks, especially for males who were allowed to choose their own music. In other words, music may pump you up. It may help you work out harder and longer than you would without it. But no matter what song you listen to, it won’t help you get that ball into the basket.
Another study took a look at how music tempo (节奏) might affect exercise. Researchers found that listening to high-tempo music makes people feel like they’re working less while also doing more good to their bodies. The study also found that the beneficial effects of high-tempo music were greatest for people who were walking or running and were felt the least for those who were doing high-intensity (高强度) exercise such as weightlifting.
High-tempo music has between 170-190 beats per minute. Sites like jog.fm can help you find the perfect songs at the perfect tempo. Find some songs you like and start moving!

At the moment, most of it is burned. But Zhu Hongli, a mechanical engineer at Northeastern University, in Boston, thinks it can be put into better use. As she, and her colleagues describe, in Matter this week, with a bit of improving bagasse makes an excellent and biodegradable (可生 物降解的)replacement for the plastic used for disposable food containers such as coffee cups.
Dr. Zhu is not the first person to have this idea. But previous attempts tended not to survive contact with liquids. She knew from previous research that the main reason why past efforts fell to pieces when wet is that bagasse is composed of short fibres which are unable to hold the finished product. She therefore sought' to insert a suitably long-fibred substance.
Bamboo seemed to be the best choice. It grows quickly /degrades readily and has appropriately long fibres. And it worked. When the researchers blended bamboo remaining into bagasse, they found that the result had a strong crossing of short and long fibres.
To put their new material through its paces, Dr. Zhu and her colleagues first poured hot oil onto it and found that, rather than passing through the material, as it would have with previous, bagasse products, the oil was resisted by their invention.
They also found that when they made a cup out of the stuff and filled it with water heated almost to boiling point, the cup remained unbroken for more than two hours. Though this is not as long as a plastic cup would Hast, it-is long enough for all practical purposes.
1. What do we know about bagasse?A.It is widely used. | B.It is usually wasted. |
C.It can not be degraded. | D.It takes up 10% of sugar cane. |

Cambridge University in Britain is considering ending 800 years of written exams and allowing students to use laptops or iPads to take exams instead. The move comes after Cambridge teachers complained (抱怨) that students' handwriting is becoming too hard to recognize. The fall in writing clearly depends on laptops in lessons and elsewhere.
As a result, more and more students with poor handwriting are being forced to return to university during the summer holidays to read their answers aloud to their teachers. However, some criticized (批评) the move, fearing the handwritten word would become a lost art.
Tracey Trussell, a handwriting expert, asked Cambridge to ''make sure that students continue to write by hand, particularly in lessons''. She told The Telegraph that writing by hand could help students improve their memory and understand lessons better.
The move also draws the attention of Harvard professor Eric Mazur. He believes that the rise of mobile internet use means that we live in an age in which we don't need to remember anything.
So he encourages students to bring their laptops and mobile phones into exams. With them, students can ''look up whatever they want, whenever they want'' and be tested on their productive skills, rather than the ability of memory.
1. Why is Cambridge University considering ending written exams?A.Because students' handwriting is too poor. |
B.Because we are already in the digital age. |
C.Because traditional tools are out of date. |

On the first morning, my children presented me a coffee pot. I liked to begin the day with a cup of coffee and was eager to try the pot.
When I made coffee, it spilled out over the whole table. Fortunately, nobody was there to see my embarrassed look! I kept trying, but each morning would see me wiping up the coffee. Then I realized that if I poured very slowly there would be no spilling.
This was at first a very painful experience. My normal practice was to rush through breakfast so that I could get on with my day. But at that moment I learned not only to pour slowly but to enjoy the experience: the smell, the taste, and the stillness of a new day.
It helped me to reflect upon whether there were other areas of my life 1 was rushing through. Most of life, it seemed. Strangely, those we consider loved ones may go of radar(雷达)when we would expect them to enquire about our well-being. However, others we seldom keep in touch with came into our lives suddenly, full of concern, well-meaning advice and love.
After the recovery period, I started to leave extra time to do even the most ordinary tasks. When shop owners would apologize for keeping me waiting, I would say, "Not a problem, I'm not in a hurry." Even hanging out washing became pleasurable when a couple of extra minutes of standing still, and listening to the birds singing in the trees around me became part of my routine.
Besides, one of my favorite experiences living in the inner city for many years was sitting on the front doorstep of our home spending time with strangers. We sat on the steps, each of us with a cup of coffee in our hands, listening to each other's stories. It was one of the warmest things about living in a busy city.
1. What was the author's life like before the time of recovery from the illness?A.Awkward. | B.Relaxing. |

B.She found joy in ordinary daily activities. |
C.She became impatient with any shop owner. |

B.To advocate enjoying slow-paced life. |
C.To show the gift from her children. |

【推荐3】It may seem as if Mother's Day was invented by a company named Hallmark, but people have been taking time on the calendar to give a shout-out to Mom for a long time. The Greeks and Romans had mother goddess festivals — although their celebrations didn't involve the menfolk taking their underappreciated mothers out to dinner. A more recent tradition was Mothering Sunday, which developed in the British Isles during the 16th century. On the fourth Sunday in April, young men and women who were living and working apart from their families were advised to return to their mothers’ houses.
Mother's Day as it is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis, a West Virginia woman who held “Mothers' Work Days” to promote health and hygiene(卫生 ) at home and in the workplace. During the Civil War, Jarvis organized women to improve sanitary conditions for soldiers on both sides, and after the war she became a peacemaker, furthering the cause by bringing together mothers of Union and Confederate soldiers and promoting a Mother's Day holiday.
Jarvis's work inspired another 19th-century woman, Julia Ward Howe. In 1870 Howe published her “Mother's Day Proclamation”, which envisioned(设想) the day not as appreciation of mothers by their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power for peace. Howe started holding annual Mother's Day celebrations in Boston, her hometown, but after about a decade she stopped footing the bill and the tradition faded away.
It was Jarvis's daughter Anna who succeeded in getting Mother’s Day recognized as a national holiday. After her mother died, in May 1905, Anna started holding yearly ceremony on the anniversary and conducting a tireless PR campaign to have the day made a holiday. In 1908 she succeeded in enlisting the support of John Wanamaker, the Philadelphia department store magnate and advertising pioneer, and by 1912 West Virginia and a few other states had adopted Mother's Day. Two years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution declaring the second Sunday in May a national holiday.
It wasn't long, though, before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under an amount of greeting cards and candy. By the 1920s Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had been instrumental in creating. “I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit,” she said.
