After a terrible electrical accident, which caused him to become both blind and deaf, the whole world became completely dark and quiet for Robert Edwards for almost ten years. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live.
One hot summer afternoon, he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once. He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet, but he was struck by the lightning. Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up some 20 minutes later lying face down in muddy water at the base of the tree. He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes, he could hardly believe what he saw: a plough and a wall. When Mrs. Edwards came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help, he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years.
The news of Robert regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread, and many doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a convincing answer as to why this should have happened. The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since Robert lost his sight and hearing as a result of a sudden shock, perhaps, the only way for him to regain them was by another sudden shock.

A school official said her 13-year-old son Jadarien was suspended (停课) for three days for talking back to his teacher. She was told to pick him up right away.
As soon as the pair got home, Payne took away her son’s cellphone and video games. She left him with her 70-year-old father, who lives with them.
“When I got home from work, he was eating strawberries and having fun with my dad.” Payne said. “It was like a vacation.” Payne knew she needed to do more to discipline him. So she handed him a tool and asked him to start cleaning up the yard. When he finished, she told him he’d be volunteering his yard services free of charge for people in need during the spare time of his suspension.
“He didn’t believe it,” Payne said. “I can be soft on him and baby him sometimes.” But Payne was serious. She posted a photo of Jadarien online with the heading, “Yard services-FREE”, explaining that he got suspended from school and would do yard services or wash cars for members of the community over the next three days. Some neighbours responded immediately.
Jadarien spent about two hours cleaning up the yards. He ended up hitting at least eight different homes. When he finished, Payne took him to the library, where he spent the rest of the day reading and completing his homework.
“We explained to him that these things weren’t to punish, but to teach him about discipline.” Payne said. “Whether the teachers are right or wrong, always respect them.”
On Tuesday, Jadarien was happy to finally head to school. Payne sat down with Jadarien’s teachers to help come up with a plan to keep him on track. However, she’s confident Jadarien learned his lesson.

“We probably spent seven or eight months looking for Thor,” Grace said. “What made it worse was that there were rumors (谣言) going around that there was dogfighting in our area. We still always hoped that somebody had taken him to be a pet, but you just never knew.”
“It was horrible. My daughter Bronwyn would try to find Thor everywhere, which had been a Christmas present for her. Even while watching TV programmes, she would say, ‘Oh, look! That dog looks like Thor!’” Grace said. Then the family moved, and the hope became impossible.
But one day, the phone rang. It was their former vet (兽医) in British Columbia, saying Thor was in a rescue shelter in High River, Alberta. He had been found at a work camp in the northern part of the place and taken to south by a man planning to keep him. But the man was forced to turn him over to the shelter when he couldn’t keep Thor in his rented home. Luckily, the ring on Thor’s neck gave people some information.
Thor was flown to Nova Scotia last week. The family picked him up at the airport. “Thor was just lying in his box and looking down, and my daughter walked over and said, ‘Hey Thor.’ He immediately stood up, trying to greet my daughter. We let him out and he jumped on her as if he was giving her a big hug and he kissed her face. Then he sat down suddenly at her feet and rolled over for attention. He was cute.” Grace said.

This has boosted my confidence and encouraged me to start writing more often. I am now writing a fiction book. I write and edit for Odyssey, and I am an officer for the SNHU Book Club. This has also helped me become a better student. I’m able to read and comprehend the text more for each class, and do well on the assignments because of my better writing skills. I truly love it, and can’t imagine where I would be right now if I hadn’t become a bookworm.
Because I read so much, I have decided to start doing a written version of a book haul (读书分享会). In short, a book haul is a review of the books read each month. They are typically done as a video, but until I have the proper equipment to do that, I will be writing mine. At the end of each month I will discuss the books I read, the books I bought, or received, and then ask for your thoughts and suggestions.
January was a busy month for me. I only finished one book, Mark of Distinction by Jessica Dotta. It’s the second book in the Price of Privilege trilogy. I bought Carve the Mark, Veronica Roth’s new book, and An Unquiet Mind, a psychology based book by Kay Redfield Jamison. I plan on reading these in February, as well as the third section of the Red Queen series, King’s Cage by Victoria Aveyard, which will be released on February 7. I am so excited for it!
If you’ve read any of the books I ever mention, feel free to reach out either on here, or Twitter! I love chatting about books!

The pub, which was established in 1308, is believed to have once been visited by William Shakespeare. But while many people in the town are delighted that one of its most famous buildings and businesses has been revived, others living close to it have a different voice.
The house has a large open area at the back for hosting live music events, for which the City Council has decided to review (校审) the licence following complaints from the public. The pub said, on its Facebook page: “To review the longstanding licence of The Black Bear is placing it at risk of closure.” It urged its supporters to write letters of support which it would forward on to the council.
The council said, in a letter to residents living near the pub, that possible measures it might take included limiting outdoor entertainment at the site to six days a year, ending at 10:30 pm each time, and requiring a noise limiting device to be fixed. The pub is run by landlord Luke Haynes and his family, who say their research shows it is the oldest pub which has always been a pub in the UK.
Luke said allowing only six events a year would mean the pub would not survive financially, adding profits earned by staging live music sessions in the summer would enable the pub to get through the winter.
He said: “The support from the town has been absolutely great. It’s a very small number of people who are complaining. We’ve had huge support from our neighbours. I’m trying to work with the council to come up with solutions to this.”
The pub’s fans have gathered behind the bid to keep it going, with an online demand having been signed by more than 2,800 people. Georgie Smith, who started it, said: “We believe closing the Black Bear would be harmful to our community, both socially and economically. The importance of pubs in the UK cannot be overstated. They are part of our cultural heritage.”

A few minutes into the call, an old lady sitting at the table beside mine got up, seemingly annoyed, and asked the restaurant staff to relocate a table as far away as possible from this man who seemed to be impolite.
I sank in my seat out of embarrassment. I ended the call soon afterwards and wanted to apologize. Before getting up, I looked around to see where she was and she was at the table farthest away from me. I noticed that the lady was alone and staring out the window. I found a tinge of sadness or anxiety and perhaps a desire for aloneness and peace. But I had clearly destroyed it minutes earlier.
Right then I gave up my plan for a traditional apologetic gesture. Seeing those funny smile cards in my wallet, I took one out and wrote some words to express my apology. On signing my restaurant bill, I asked a waiter to secretly charge the lady’s meal to me and hand her the smile card instead of her bill.
Did she take it the wrong way, I wondered? Did she get confused? Did she refuse the anonymous offer? And so on. I just waited and felt nervous to learn the result. To my pleasant surprise, things turned out the best possible way.
The waiter approached me in a joy, telling me, “In the many times she had dined here before, I had never seen the old lady smile as she did when receiving the smile card and the $0 bill. She thanked me even though I explained that someone else did the job.”

It also meant getting used to a whole new community and a whole new school each time we moved. I can still feel what it was like to have to walk into the new school---that sinking feeling in my belly, that heaviness in my throat. It would always take time for me to learn how everything worked, what was cool and what not. It was always a struggle to find where I could fit in.
Already shy, I didn’t have much self-confidence in my friend-making abilities. I was the girl walking in the halls with her head down, panicking. When I spoke, you could hardly hear my soft voice. I was nervous and doubted myself a lot.
It was very hard not having a history with everyone else. I was an outsider. But what I did have was soccer. Wherever I went, I knew that I could fit it with the soccer ball. The soccer team meant a familiar place and immediate friends for me. I could express myself and feel good about myself on the field. Playing hard helped to get rid of all my nervousness.
Throughout our lives, our self-respect goes down when we feel like a failure, and it goes up when we feel successful. Doing something well, being praised, and feeling loved goes a long way. We all need to explore opportunities where we can be good at something and feel good about ourselves. Physical activity and sport participation is a terrific way to build up our sense of self-confidence and self-worth.
