When Demetris Payne saw a missed call from her son’s junior high school, she knew something was wrong. With a sigh, the single mom of four from Shreveport, Louisiana, called back. A school official said her 13-year-old son Jadarien was suspended (停课) for three days for talking back to his teacher. She was told to pick him up right away.
As soon as the pair got home, Payne took away her son’s cellphone and video games. She left him with her 70-year-old father, who lives with them.
“When I got home from work, he was eating strawberries and having fun with my dad.” Payne said. “It was like a vacation.” Payne knew she needed to do more to discipline him. So she handed him a tool and asked him to start cleaning up the yard. When he finished, she told him he’d be volunteering his yard services free of charge for people in need during the spare time of his suspension.
“He didn’t believe it,” Payne said. “I can be soft on him and baby him sometimes.” But Payne was serious. She posted a photo of Jadarien online with the heading, “Yard services-FREE”, explaining that he got suspended from school and would do yard services or wash cars for members of the community over the next three days. Some neighbours responded immediately.
Jadarien spent about two hours cleaning up the yards. He ended up hitting at least eight different homes. When he finished, Payne took him to the library, where he spent the rest of the day reading and completing his homework.
“We explained to him that these things weren’t to punish, but to teach him about discipline.” Payne said. “Whether the teachers are right or wrong, always respect them.”
On Tuesday, Jadarien was happy to finally head to school. Payne sat down with Jadarien’s teachers to help come up with a plan to keep him on track. However, she’s confident Jadarien learned his lesson.

It is important that every student gives careful attention to his educational objectives and the program of studies before he registers. Deadline date for change of program, refund of A. S. Membership, etc. , are indicated in each semester’s schedule of classes and in the Student Handbook.
Attendance and Student Request to Withdraw from a Class
Since attendance is considered necessary for normal progress in a class, the student is expected to be in class regularly and on time.
First Ten Weeks: A student may withdraw from a single class or from all classes during the first ten weeks without penalty. Proper forms for withdrawal are available in the Counselling Office.
After Ten Weeks: A student may withdraw from a single class or from all classes by filling proper forms available in the Counselling Office. A grade check will be made with the instructor. If the student was passing the course at the time of his last attendance, he will receive a “W” grade. If he was failing, he may be given a “U” (unsatisfactory withdrawal) grade.
Exception: This policy does not apply to “classes for adults” numbered 9000-9900.All students who withdraw will be given “W” grades in these classes.

When a student is dropped from a class, he will receive a “W” grade, except under the following conditions: If the last attendance occurs after the10th week and if the student was doing failing work, the instructor may assign a “U” grade.
Exception: This policy does not apply in classes numbered 9000-9900. All students who withdraw will be given “W” grades in these classes.

And yes, it’s good to get along well with your teachers because, in general, it’s smart to learn how to get along well with the different types of people you’ll meet throughout your life.
In fact, kids who get along well with their teachers not only learn more, but they’re more comfortable with asking questions and getting extra help. This makes it easier for them to understand new materials and makes them do their best in tests.

But he was still as surprised as anyone else to be selected for the field’s most famous prize.
Most of the architects and critics had openly supposed that 2022 would be Sir David Adjaye’s year, who is best known for designing such notable buildings as the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC. Kéré, who is based in Berlin but centers much of his practice in Africa, has been far lesser known, with signature buildings that include primary schools and a health care clinic.
Kéré said his architectural practice was inspired by his own experience attending school with around 100 other children in a region where temperatures were regularly higher than 38℃.
“It’s very hot inside and there was no light, while outside, the sunlight was abundant. So I dreamed of making it better one day,” he said.
When he was twenty, in 1985, Kéré earned a scholarship to study carpentry (木工) in Berlin. While studying roofing and furniture making, he also attended night school and was admitted to Technische Universität Berlin, from which he graduated in 2004 with an advanced degree in architecture. He was still a student when he designed and built the Gando Primary School. The recognition it earned helped Kéré open his own office in Berlin.
In his designs for Gando Primary School and Naaba Belem Goumma Secondary School in Burkina Faso, Kéré drew on traditional building materials such as local clay mixed with concrete, and emphasized shade and shadows with well-aired spaces that reduce the need for air conditioning.

One thing I remember about that trip was when we were only about half an hour from our village, we had to get out of our car. The road in front of us was completely under water. We all got on a bamboo boat for another two or three hours.
That was 15 years ago — the last time I visited our village. One by one, many other villagers left there. But my father has been working hard to build it up. He doesn’t want it to be lost.
Yes, we should protect our home. But there is something else to think about: climate crisis (气候危机). Bangladesh is at the centre of the climate crisis — it is hit by floods, droughts, storms and other natural disasters. “I jokingly say, Bangladesh is God’s laboratory for natural disasters,” says Prof Ainun Nishat, an expert on climate change from Bangladesh.
The period from June to October sees heavy rains. But the rainfall time is becoming more erratic (无常的). In 2020, Sylhet, my hometown, was hit by huge floods that affected thousands of families, whose homes were swept away. In fact, over a quarter of the country was flooded. Nearly 1.3 million homes were damaged, and hundreds of people died.
The weather is getting more extreme (极端的). It is getting too hot. And the supply of water can’t be relied upon, leaving the land getting drier.
Although people have worries about droughts and floods, unlike in the past, the country is well-prepared to deal with them. Prof Nishat says, “Maybe 20, 30 years back we depended on external (外部的) support to return to normal from any natural disaster, but now it’s different. The country has developed, and we suffered these disasters many times, so the people are one of the most prepared.”
1. What do the underlined words “wear off” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A.Advance. | B.Make sense. |

B.It needs more people to build it up. |
C.People living there lead an unhappy life. |

B.To show the effects of climate change. |
C.To prove floods are frequent in Bangladesh. |
D.To show the great damage caused by floods. |
A.People in Bangladesh think the external support is unnecessary. |
B.People in Bangladesh try to rebuild their homes on their own. |
C.Bangladesh needs more support to aid its development. |
D.Bangladesh is trying hard to deal with climate change. |
