John was traveling by ship to Europe when a terrible storm came. A great leak was filling the ship with water. No matter how hard the sailors and passengers worked at the pumps, the water was still rising. The ship was sinking fast. There seemed to be no hope. But the captain told them not to give up hope. He said that there was hope so long as the ship remained above water. He promised that if they didn’t give up hope, he would land them safely. The captain’s powerful will moved them all. In the end he did land them safely.

After they landed, John found the captain to show his appreciation. But to his surprise, the captain said to him that he was the boy of 30 years ago who bought a geography book in his bookstore. John suddenly thought of the boy. At that time the boy didn’t have enough money, but he had gone from shop to shop and believed he could get what he wanted. Finally, he made it. Now, it was the same willpower of him that saved the lives of all the passengers.

Today is his birthday. It's a special day that Brian feels that he is lucky to share with you, for today he is 70 years old.

About a month ago Brian asked Danielle and Nancy if he could do what he wanted to do on his birthday. He didn't know then what he would say, but he did know that he wanted to share his age in a very public way. Little did he suspect then that he would be sharing not only with his co-workers on the 29th floor, but with the entire region!

Revealing age is not something that most people, including himself, feel comfortable doing. People wouldn't think of asking their friends, associates or customers how old they are. Why is it then perfectly acceptable to ask a child how old he is? What changes between age 7 and age 70? When and why does age turn from something to be proudly claimed to a topic to be avoided?

He believes it happens when a child no longer states his age as a simple fact, just as his youngest son Gavin used to do with mathematical precision: “I am 6 and 5/12 years old.” Then he instead begins to focus on being seen as older. As parents, people contribute to this mind shift by remarks such as “Act your age” or “You're older than that.” He admits that he said such things to his own children. The child gets the message that age brings status, power and autonomy. People celebrate important events. Then sometime after age 21 birthday celebrations lose their allure. No longer is getting older seen as a badge of distinction. Instead, people become concerned that they are getting old. The very word “old” has negative connotations. What image comes to mind when you hear “old age” “old folk's home” “old guard” or “out with the old, in with the new”? “You're too old” will gradually turn into “I'm too old.” He has heard this inner voice many times.

Paragraph 1:

He always recalls the moment when he was 30.

It happened on one Sunday morning a few days ago. When I was about to have my routine cup of coffee along with a bagel, I realized that I did not have any bread at all. I have to admit that I am unable to enjoy coffee without some kind of baked food.

I decided to run out to buy something. However, all the stores were closed, but one. That store did not have any fresh pastries, and I ended up buying four slices of wheat bread. I was frustrated for two reasons: my favourite routine — Sunday coffee ruined, and the saleswoman charged me $3 for four slices of bread. I returned to the building where I lived on the tenth floor, stepped into the elevator, pushed the button, and got out. When I reached my apartment and tried to unlock the door, I could not turn the key. I made a few attempts but without success. I started banging on the door, hoping to wake up my daughter. I was not successful at that either.

I can’t explain how it crossed my mind to check the number of the apartment. The apartment number was correct, except for the first digit: the apartment was on the ninth floor, not the tenth. I was shocked to realize that I had been banging on somebody else’s door.

I still think over what might have happened if somebody had opened the door and what he or she would have said to me at 8:00 am on Sunday morning.

A golden haze settled over the cornfields. The sun prepared to rest for the evening, and I intended to follow. Saying goodbye to the clan (宗族) I was staying with, I headed back to camp. I looked forward to setting my camera aside for an evening to reflect on my time in Ethiopia.

It wasn’t long when I heard a voice behind me, “Photo, photo, photo.” A young Surma boy about eight years old followed closely at my heels. I breathed a tired sigh. I had no energy to press the shutter button one more time, no matter how beautiful or eager he was.

Over the past four days, many in the camp had wanted their photograph taken. I hoped the boy would find someone else to snap his photograph, but he kept following me and saying, “Photo, photo, photo.” He managed to catch my eye. With eyes wide full of hope, he asked me again with anticipation on his face.

As I looked at him, half interested, an idea for a composition flashed in my mind.

I kneeled in the cornfield and instructed the boy where to stand and how to pose. As I prepared to take the photograph, his energy suddenly shifted from eagerness to shyness to fear.

No matter what I told him to do—how to stand and how to look—I just couldn’t get the shot. Frustrated, I gave up. I looked at the boy, who looked alone and awkward. He’d wanted his photograph taken, and now he’d gone camera-shy.

In an effort to cheer him, I clapped my hands, saying, “That was great. You were great.” Others in his clan gathered around, cheering and clapping loudly. The boy’s face immediately broke into a smile. I intuitively (凭直觉地) took a few shots of the moment. That photograph turned out to be better than I’d imagined.
