Shopping is a big part of the holiday season, when families and friends gather together and exchange gifts. While the popularity of shopping online has grown, such practices are not always eco-friendly or timely,as gifts bought online must be packaged and shipped, wasting valuable resources and time.
The benefits of shopping locally go beyond convenience and reduce your carbon footprint. The following are a few ways that shopping locally this holiday season can directly benefit your community and the people who call it home.
When men and women shop locally, they are putting money back into their local communities.Local businesses may be owned by your neighbors, and it can be comforting to know that your holiday shopping dollars are going to support a neighbor instead of a large company.Local businesses also employ your neighbors,so shopping locally can strengthen the local economy by creating jobs.
Local businesses go a long way toward creating a neighborhood identity, and that identity can create a stronger sense of community among you and your neighbors. In addition,a unique community identity can make your town more attractive to outsiders, and can also attract more people to local businesses in your neighborhood.
The gifts you buy when shopping locally can also benefit your community.Gifts purchased from small local businesses tend to be more unique than items bought from national chains,as smaller retailers tend to sell more home-made items than their national competitors.Recipients of such items may find such gifts more thoughtful than mass produced items bought from national chains.
The accessibility of customer service is another benefit of shopping locally. When you buy something from national chains, especially during the holiday season when such businesses may have to deal with orders, making contact with customer service departments can be a test of patience.A long wait on the phone or online can make the process of contacting customer service departments extremely frustrating. But such frustration is rare when shopping from local businesses,as consumers can simply buy their products in the store. In addition, shopping locally makes it more convenient for friends and family members who also live in your community to return their gifts.

For years men have been more likely to shop on the Internet than women, but during the 2011 holiday season 58 percent of those making online purchases(购买)were women.
“It shows how mainstream the Internet is becoming”,said Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet and American Life Project group, which carried out the study.
Rainie said it was only a matter of time before women shoppers caught up with men. This is because women traditionally make decisions about spending.
Users were more likely to shop online to save time.Internet users between the ages of 18 and 29 were responsible for some of the most dramatic increases in the online gift-buying population this time around.
However,three-quarters of the US Internet users did not buy holiday gifts online in 2011.They worried about credit card security(安全),or just compared online prices with off-line prices, then dashed off to t he shops to get the best deals.
“But even if shoppers don’t buy online, websites are becoming promotion tools for stores,”said Dan Hess, vice president of Comscore Networks Inc.Hess said that actually most stores’ websites can make customers fully believe the security of their credit card numbers. And most are able to ensure that gifts arrive on time.“It’s all about making the shopping experience more efficient, more reliable and more comfortable.”Hess said.

The oldest examples date all the way back to the invention of motion pictures, when the Lever Brothers’ Sunlight Soap appeared in the Lumiere films in 1896. But as streaming has become more popular, product placements have become an even more attractive option for advertisers now.
When watching web videos, most consumers either skip or ignore the advertisements that run before the video starts. So as advertisers struggle to reach consumers, they are increasingly turning to product placement, spending advertising budgets to get their advertisements into media content in ways that can’t be skipped or ignored. Studies have shown they increase viewers’ awareness of products and their positive attitudes toward them.
Not all product placements are effective, though. Those that seem to influence viewers the most are those that strike the careful balance between being noticeable and not too boring. Viewers tend to be turned off if the product placement is too noticable, as when a character in the show holds the product and talks about it.
Viewers are most influenced by product placements in which the product or brand name is spoken by one of the characters but not shown. Also viewers may be more attracted to product placements that appear earlier in a show or movie. Because we become more engaged in the plot and characters of a show or movie as it progresses. If a placement appears at the climax — the moment when our attention is fixed on what will happen next — we’re either less likely to notice the placement or more likely to be annoyed if we do notice it.
With increasing online viewers and better designed product placement, perhaps advertisers will consider product placement their first choice and decrease their spending on traditional advertising, like TV and print ads.

Oxford Street
London is a shoppers’ paradise, and most visitors head for Oxford Street. Halfway along is Selfridges, one of the world’s first department stores where the architecture and window dressing impress you even before you go in. There are at least four other major stores on this street, plus Europe’s largest music shop. In December the atmosphere is especially festive because of the Christmas lights which are always lighted by a politician, a great sportsman, or a super star.
Kensington High Street
A fashionable area for shopping is Kensington High Street. One of its department stores even has a roof garden — good for relaxing between purchases. There’s also an organic food superstore.
Borough Market
You can’t visit London without going to a supermarket. One of the oldest and best for food is probably Borough Market on the south bank of the Thames. Get off the underground at London Bridge and wander among fresh fish stalls, bakeries, and fruit and vegetable sellers. You can also buy specialities to take away, like cheeses, pork pies, mustard and chutney.
More places for bargains
Portobello Road Market on a Saturday is your best choice for jewelry or collector’s items. It’s a short walk from the underground station at Notting Hill Gate and you never know what you will find. For clothes, Camden Market is the place. It gets a little crowded at the weekends, though. Convent Garden Market offers great experience for the simple pleasure of looking at jewelry and gifts.

People come one week a year to party in the villages of their ancestors.During the other 51 weeks, villages are deserted.“There was a time when this place was growing! But not anymore.” says Felix Sacristan, who’s 55 and unemployed, living in his late grandfather’s house.“The only ones left are the elderly. There are lots of abandoned homes.”It makes for cheap housing,he says.
Like much of Spain’s central Meseta Table Plateau, this land is dusty and the climate is severe.People say it’s like nine months of winter and three months of burning hell.“This land used to be for cereals (谷物),but it’s difficult to grow anything else,”Sacristan says.“And who wants to be a farmer these days now, anyway?”
In northern Europe, the Industrial Revolution pulled people to big cities centuries ago.But in Spain, that migration happened much later. The first wave occurred after the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s;the second, after Spain’s military governing ended in the late 1970s.Now there’s been a third leaving, during the recent economic crisis. But it’s not just on Spain’s severe central land.Even villages in the country’s most fertile northwest region,Galicia, are being depopulated. The Galician landscape once supported Spain’s highest population, and half of all Spanish villages are located there. Now nearly half of these villages are abandoned.
“Some of the places I’m finding have been empty for 50 or 60 years,” Adkinson,a British-born real estate (房地产)agent who searches the countryside for abandoned properties and tries to match them up with foreign buyers, says.

Yes, a rose is a rose is a rose. But selling them is no longer a beautiful experience for traditional flower shops. Supermarkets now offer convenience to the busy and discount rose shops help those hopelessly in love save money. Roses only is a good example of a discount rose retailer that was transformed from a traditional shop to answer the challenge in the 90s.
Inside this store on Sixth Avenue near 40 th Street, contemporary white furniture and wall – to – wall mirrors give it an expensive look. Customers move about freely among the counters, looking eagerly at the roses in more than 50 colors from shelf to shelf. Some customers say it’s the high quality of the roses that attracts them there. “I spent $ 20 but the flowers looked like I paid 60 or 70 dollars,” says one customer.
Studies show more people are buying roses in ones, two and threes these days. In fact, more than half of all roses are sold in bunches of fewer than a dozen. But Roses Only’s low prices encourage people to spend. Even on Valentine’s Day, when the price of a dozen roses and delivery can soar as high as $150, 12 of Roses Only's most expensive flowers sell for just $35. The company's key to success is to hold prices down by controlling every link in the rose chain. It grows its own roses in the sunshine of the Andes Mountains. In addition, the company also sells other items such as ballons and stuffed animals.
While discount rose retailers are witnessing their business bloom, U.S. rose growers aren’t able to compete with the fierce foreign competition. More than 57% of roses sold in the USA are grown in other countries. The biggest foreign producers are Colombia and Ecuador, which accounted for almost 90% of the total imported last year. The trend has hurt domestic rose growers such as Johnson Flowers of California, considered to be this country's leading producer.
Now, instead of fighting overseas rivals, the Johnsons are trying to work with them. "We have a few big fighting overseas rivals, the Johnsons are trying to work with them. “We may also widen our business to include the service area and be a representative for overseas flower producers.”
As a result of severe competition, those in the rose business long for the good old days, whereas ordinary people benefit from the low price.

Xing suggested the government give out 1,000 Yuan to each Chinese since the government income has increased rapidly in recent years. He said his suggestion would allow everyone to directly enjoy the fruits of the country’s economic success, help the lower-income groups deal with rising prices and increase consumption (消费) around the country.
Recent years have seen the government carry out a series of pro-poor (扶贫) and pro-rural (惠农) policies, including increasing spending on public healthcare and calling off the agricultural tax. But the lower-income group still needs more help while being hit hard by an 11-year high in prices and recent snowstorms.
Xing said while making the draft, he has borrowed many ideas from practices in countries like the United States and Singapore. Earlier this year, the governments of the two nations offered cash handouts (救济) to their citizens as the result of a surplus in government income. As for in China, “We can even encourage the rich to donate their 1,000 Yuan red packet to the poor,” said Xing.
Although Xing’s suggestion has gained wide support among ordinary Chinese on the Internet, many other economists criticized it as unpractical. Even Xing himself admitted he made the suggestion without any careful calculation. But they agreed with Xing's point that the growing economic pie should be shared among the people.
“To better use the increase of money, handing out money is not a solution that holds good for all time. It could be better to improve the public service or cut the price of energy use in daily life,” said Qiao Xinsheng, an economic professor.

The parks may also be in danger because of development that is going on around them. For example, around Yellow Stone Park, many hotels, golf courses, resorts, and other tourist attractions have been built. Some of these developments have effect on areas that are used by animals.People will have to learn to agree about ways to protect the parks. If they do not, there will soon be no reason to visit these national treasures.

What sets his business apart is the free ice cream that Foreman generously gives out. He talked about young visitors wanting a treat of ice cream they couldn’t afford. “You know when kids come in, you can notice some of the kids have it and some of the kids don’t have it.
So I’m going to sponsor them. I just want to do some positive things. I believe my community is in need of a family-friendly ice. cream shop,” Foreman said. Foreman has also organized events like storybook readings accompanied by sweet treats for local kids.
With his business slogan “A place for community”, and artworks and cards from local kids decorating the walls, Foreman’s store has quickly gained a devoted following. One day, Nicole Harkin, one of his regular customers, noticed Foreman gave a free ice cream to kids without money.
For Foreman, this was a constant gesture that had just gone unnoticed, but Harkin reacted with surprise. She came back and handed him an envelope containing 100 dollars. Foreman was so touched by Harkin’s gift that he posted it on social media. Foreman and Harkin’s kind behaviors also inspired other customers to cover Foreman’s free ice creams for people they didn’t know. Foreman’s ice cream project has received many donations since then.
“When you see people doing their best, you want to do your best. Everything is contagious, whether you do something negative or positive. That’s just part of being in the community. However, the musical version of My Fair Lady is even older, and has been entertaining audiences since 1956. In fact, a new Broadway version of the musical was nominated for 10 Tony awards.
The story of Eliza Doolittle, a working-class flower seller from London, and the snobbish Professor Higgins, who teaches her “proper English”, has never showed any signs of dying out since it was introduced.
But why do people still queue up around the block for tickets when a new production of the play is announced?
The answer is simple: The musical has a wonderful story. Everyone can identify with Doolittle’s desire to live a more satisfying life; all she wants is to get rid of her accent so she can get a job in a store and not on the streets. However, it seems that people like Higgins are always looking down on Doolittle for not being from a fancy family, which is something that many of us can relate to.
Besides Doolittle’s background, the story and the songs in the musical are also what make it so popular. Audience members are moved when Eliza and her fellow flower sellers imagine what it’d be like to live as a rich person does. This is perfectly summed up in the lyric, “Wouldn’t it be lovely?”
The musical also makes people think. It doesn’t make sense that one kind of accent can be considered good and another bad. Eliza and her father speak “badly” because they were born poor, while Higgins speaks “proper English” because he was born a “gentleman”. That reflects the unfairness of class divisions – a kind of unfairness that still sadly exists today.

I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started shouting. She shouted back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.
Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so busy with my work that I even didn’t notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression was such disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.”

These unwanted guests at Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens look like tiny foxes with wings. Officials have estimated there are about 11,000 of them living in the harbor-side park. After inspecting damage to dozens of trees they now believe there are twice as many as previously thought. Branches have been breaking under the weight of these furry invaders and their droppings have been poisoning plants.
Help may well be at hand, however, in the shape of the ordinary garbage bin. The gardens’ director Dr. Tim Entwistle hopes the unpleasant sounds of crashing bin lids will agitate the flying foxes and force them to move on. “The way to disturb them is to use noises, so we’ve used the loud noises made by rubbish bins in the past. You can also use speakers as long as you move the noise around, and what we’ll do is to have a series of noises, at the beginning and end of the day. What we’ve found in the past is that the flying foxes leave the gardens and go somewhere else,” said Tim.
The gray-headed flying fox is Australia’s largest bat. It flies around at night using its eyes and a powerful sense of smell to search for fruit and flowers. Officials at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney have said they’re optimistic the unwelcome colony can be uprooted. If and when the bats do move to other parts of the city they will of course then become someone else’s problem.

She may think of him and treat him that way as her son, buying his food, paying his health bills and his taxes(税), but in fact Tom is a dog.
Catherine and Tom live in Sweden, a country where everyone is expected to lead an orderly life according to rules laid down by the government, which also provides a high level of care for its people. This level of care costs money.
People in Sweden pay taxes on everything, so it's surprised to find that owning a dog means yet more taxes. Some people are paying as much as 500 Swedish kronor in taxes a year for the right to keep their dog, money that is spent by the government on dog hospitals and sometimes medical treatment for a dog that falls ill. However, most such treatment is expensive, so owners often decide to offer health and even life premium for their dog.
In Sweden dog owners must pay for any damage their dog does. A Swedish Kennel Club official explains what this means: if your dog runs out on the road and gets hit by a passing car you, as the owner, have to pay for any damage done to the car, even if your dog has been killed in the accident.
