What Type of College is Right for You?

When deciding what colleges to apply for, you may feel stressed about what type of campus you want to live and study on.     1     Do you want to know everybody at your school, or are you looking for more of a college town experience where you meet new people every day?

2     Are you looking for a liberal arts (文科) school or a more STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) focused college? Maybe you want to attend a school more specific to what you may want to do in the future, like a music or art based school. Another aspect or factor into your decision is the kinds of activities the college offers.     3

Once you start collecting a list of places you are thinking about, the next thing to do is to consult your college counselors and start your applications. When applying to college, make sure to get help and advice from the college counselors, who always have their doors open to keep students on track when it comes to the college process.     4     Keeping them up to date on how far along you are in the process will help the college counselors get their job done and make your application a success.

Once those applications are in, the hardest part comes next: waiting.     5     As soon as the results come out, you will know which school is right for you, whether it is your top choice or something else down your list.

A.The next step is finding what college suits you academically.
B.They also invite students to email any question they may have.
C.One of the first things that colleges look at is your past school record.
D.This is also the time to reflect on which college you are hoping to get into.
E.Sports, the arts and other interests can be a huge part in determining the right school.
F.Choosing between a larger or smaller campus is the first step to narrow down which college is right for you.
G.You should be thinking well in advance about which teachers you want to write recommendations to.

【推荐1】How to Start a Career(职业)

Starting a career is about making choices as to what you want out of life well into the future. You could be switching careers, starting fresh, or just looking to see what is out there.     1

Dive online into research about careers you're interested in.

On the one hand, if you're unsure about which career you want, make a list of 5-10 jobs you might like and then start searching them.     2     You may realize, for example, that becoming an actor has a high burden to entry, with low job security and uncertain hours. But being a production assistant, working on film sets, is a much more manageable start and can lead to a variety of film careers.

Take an honest look at your current qualifications (资格).

Generally speaking, the career you want is going to need some training and experience.     3     What you should do next is make enough preparations for the career you love.

Do some volunteer work in fields you enjoy.

This can be especially useful if you're not sure, or if you have several choices and you can't make up your mind between them.     4     But it is useful for a short period to give you a good taste of what the career is like.

    5

It is a good idea to discuss careers with others. It can help you judge if people are enjoying what they're doing every day. It also lets you ask questions to put yourself in their shoes, determining if you see yourself in that job. This can really help you to decide what will work for you.

A.Don't forget to add new jobs to your list.
B.However, never fear if you feel a little under-qualified(不合格的) at the moment.
C.On the other hand, list your strengths, talents, even those not related to typical careers.
D.Either way, it's important to find out what fits best so that you don't burn out half-way.
E.Ask other people what they like about their careers.
F.Don’t feel like there is a “right” answer to picking a career.
G.It doesn’t necessarily mean you need to do long-term work for free.

【推荐2】Society tells us that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. But it doesn’t have to be that way. A new study published in Human Development points out that using a childlike approach to learning can help people of any age take on and rise to new challenges.     1    .

Venture (冒险) outside your comfort zone. As adults, we tend to use similar skills day in and day out: We take jobs in fields we re already good at, drive the same routes to the same places, and fall into routines we’re comfortable with.     2     Switching to something more challenging may have more cognitive benefits.

3     A fear of making mistakes is another reason adults are so slow to learn new things; if we try and fail, we can face criticism, lose money, or get fired. That’s why it’s important to build up a support network of people--at work and at home--who allow you to make mistakes and learn from them.

Make a serious commitment and don’t give up.     4     If you can afford it, spending money on a new pursuit--for example, booking a trip to Rome to practice your Italian--might also make it harder to throw in the towel.

Learn more than one thing at once. We tend to zero in on one hobby or one skill. But dividing that time and energy into three or four areas will stretch your brain in all different directions.     5     For example, maybe you started learning a new language in 2018, and this year you add singing lessons, and next year you try something else. You can add things gradually based on what you can handle.

A.Turn to your friends and family.
B.The following strategies will do the trick.
C.Surround yourself with encouraging people.
D.Telling friends about your new goal can help keep you motivated.
E.But all this familiarity limits the parts of the brain we’re using regularly.
F.That doesn’t mean you should start all the new challenges all at once, though.
G.So feeling comfortable can reduce stress and make you happier and more productive.

【推荐3】It’s normal for us to feel nervous in some social situations.     1     But for people suffering from social anxiety disorder, also called social phobia (恐惧症), even everyday communication causes significant anxiety, self-consciousness and embarrassment. It’s because they fear to be judged negatively by others.

Feelings of shyness or discomfort in certain situations aren’t necessarily signs of social anxiety disorder, particularly in children. Comfort levels in social situations vary, depending on individual personality. Some people are naturally reserved (矜持的).     2

In contrast to everyday nervousness, social anxiety disorder includes fear, anxiety and avoidance that affect relationships, daily routines, work, school and other activities.     3     However, it can sometimes start in younger children or in adults.

4     Children who experience teasing, bullying, rejection or humiliation (羞辱) may be more prone (易于遭受的) to social anxiety disorder. In addition, other negative events in life, such as family conflict, trauma, or abuse, may be associated with this disorder.

There’s no way to predict what will cause someone to develop social anxiety disorder, but you can take steps to reduce its impact. One approach is to get help early. Anxiety, like many other mental health conditions, can be harder to treat if you wait.     5     Continually tracking and recording your personal life can help you and doctors identify what’s causing your stress and what helps you feel better.

A.And you can also keep a journal.
B.And others can be more outgoing.
C.Left untreated, social anxiety disorder can control your life.
D.Social anxiety disorder typically begins in the early to mid-teens.
E.There are some typical signs appearing on your body or in your mind.
F.Several factors can increase the risk of developing social anxiety disorder.
G.For example, going on a date or giving a speech may make you feel uneasy.
