About 1,500 years ago in China, silk production was a state secret. The silk trade was so     1     (value) that anyone who tried to take silkworm eggs or mulberry seeds out of China     2     (put) to death. However, in 552 AD, two monks smuggled silkworm eggs to Constantinople, and then silk production spread worldwide.

A silkworm actually isn’t a worm at all. It’s     3     type of caterpillar that once     4     (exist) in the wild, but now it only survives in domesticated form. Silkworms are fussy eaters,     5     (dine) only on mulberry leaves. When a silkworm has had     6     (it) fill, it spins a cocoon from a single strand (缕) of silk, two to three thousand feet long!

According to legend, a Chinese empress discovered how to harvest silk when a cocoon fell into her tea. She plucked it from the teacup by the loose end of the silk, then unraveled the whole cocoon. To harvest silk     7     (commercial), cocoons are first steamed to kill the pupae inside. That’s because the silkworm would break the silk if it began to emerge     8     a moth (蛾). Next the cocoon is soaked in hot water—rather than tea—to dissolve the sticky coating that binds the silk. Then a machine unwinds the single strand     9     makes up each cocoon. Twisted together, these strands make the fine thread     10     (use) to weave silk cloth.

Are you sometimes a little tired     1     sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time——about eight hours after     2     (wake) up——your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments in     3     there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always     4     (follow) a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours     5    .

In many parts of the world, people take naps     6     the middle of the day. This is     7     (especial) true in warmer climates, where the heat makes it difficult     8     (work) in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A     9     (day) nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from     10     (problem) such as heart disease.
