One day a woman was walking down the street when she saw a beggar sitting on the corner. As he sat there, passers-by walked by him giving him dirty looks. But when she saw him, the woman was willing to help him.
She stopped and looked down, asking him whether he was all right. The man slowly looked up. This was a woman clearly used to the finer things of life. She looked like that she had never missed a meal in her life. His first thought was that she wanted to make fun of him, like so many others had done before. “Leave me alone,” he said angrily.
To his surprise, the woman continued standing and smiled. “Are you hungry?” she asked.
"No," he answered. "I've just come from dining with the president. Now go away."
The woman's smile became even broader. Suddenly the man felt a gentle hand under his arm. "What are you doing, lady?" the man asked angrily. "I said to leave me alone." However, the woman insisted on getting him something to eat in the restaurant across the street. She even asked a passer-by to help grab his other arm and lift him up. Finally, Jack was taken into the restaurant. The woman explained to the manager that she would buy him something to eat.
"Not in here!" the manager replied angrily. "Having a person like that here is bad for business."
Old Jack smiled. "See, lady. I told you so. Can I leave now?"
The woman turned to the manager and smiled. "Sir, are you familiar with E&A, the banking firm down the street?"
"Of course I am," the manager answered impatiently. "They hold their weekly meetings in one of my banquet rooms."
"And do you make a good profit from that?"
"It’s none of your business."
"I am Penelope Eddy, CEO of the company."

That’s a lesson a Connecticut man learned this week, when he miraculously (神奇地) recovered a dollar bill that his wife had signed years before.
Peter and Grace Bilillo were married for 50 years before Grace lost her battle with cancer. They first met in Peter’s home in Sicily when his mother introduced her unmarried son to the pretty girl down the street.
It was love at first sight. “We got married in 40 days,” said the 86-year-old man.
About seven years ago, the devoted couple each took a dollar bill and signed the names - Grace on one and Peter on the other - as a sign of their love.
“I said, ‘This dollar bill is going to be in my wallet forever,”’ Peter Bilillo said.
Forever didn’t last as long as Peter hoped, though - two years after signing the two bills, he fortuitously spent them. When his wife died, he was heartbroken.
“I felt sorry, very sorry. I thought we were never going to see those two dollars back again,” he said.
So, imagine Peter’s surprise when seven months after his beloved wife’s death, he took his granddaughter to a local subway shop, glanced at the change handed back to him by the cashier and saw his beloved Grace’s name staring at him from one of the dollar bills.
“I never thought I was going to get that dollar back again,” he said. “The first thing I said was, ‘Grace, she did this to make me happy.’”
“It’s a miracle to get it back,” he told reporters. “Who knows how many millions of people got that dollar in their hands?”
Peter says he hopes that, with a little help from Grace, the dollar with his signature will make his way back to him as well.

Then a couple of things happened that made us take a closer look at things. When we went to Flora’s parent-teacher conferences, the teacher first handed us an essay about how my daughter wanted a cat, and then an imaginary story about where she would like to go on vacation: Catville.
It was then that my wife and I came to the realization that our daughter wasn’t just messing around here. And it was time for us to break down. But before we brought our new cat home, my wife sternly warned us that she was not going to be the one to take care of or clean up after the cat. Flora was going to take full responsibility. Fine, my daughter said.
We welcomed our mini family member into the house right around Christmas. We named her Goldy. When we got her, she peed everywhere. But other than that, she was perfect. My tough-talking wife gradually fell in love with Goldy. And Goldy fell in love with her. Of course, it’s not just my wife who loves Goldy. We all do.
There are so many things about that cat that absolutely brighten our life, highlighted by how she nearly bursts with affection when we come home or wake up in the morning. From the moment Goldy came into our house, it seemed unreasonable that we didn’t have a cat before then. We should have settled down to the decision much earlier.

“Dear Santa, it’s Jonah. Do you remember me? I was the one who asked for a covid cure,” he wrote in a letter addressed to the North Pole and shared with CNN. “Thank you so much for the vaccine! You helped save lives. This year, can I please have a Santa costume to spread your joy around the world?”
With a relentless virus and threats of the Omicron variant still plaguing a weary nation, Jonah has big plans for the Santa suit. “I want to wear it and go around the neighborhood and spread Santa’s joy, asking people what they want for Christmas,” the fifth-grader said.

He also marked his birthday by donating his hair to Locks of Love, the charity that makes wigs for kids with cancer or other medical conditions. During a year of lockdown, he teamed up with some friends and grew out his hair to nine inches.

To catch a train back to my job in downtown Calgary, I headed toward the station. But half blinded by sunlight, I stumbled and fell. My glasses flew off my face. I looked around for them, or rather felt around for them, found them and picked them up. They had landed in the worst possible way and broken. That was terrible. Without my glasses I’m so nearsighted that I’m legally blind. I cannot see the big E on the eye chart.
There I was in an unfamiliar part of town, eyes ultra-sensitive to light, on a sunny day, couldn’t see a thing, all alone. I couldn’t help it: tears ran down my cheeks. I was getting pretty panicky.
It was about then that a young girl, somewhere in her teen years, asked me what was wrong and whether she could help me. I told her what had happened. She helped calm me down and offered to call someone for me. She put the coins in the pay phone and dialed my husband’s office number, which I couldn’t do for myself. He said he’d come get me. Then she waited with me until he arrived and handed me over to him.
That girl was a complete stranger. She could have ignored me. She could have left me to wait for my husband alone. But she certainly missed whatever train she had been waiting for. She didn’t make me feel foolish. She made me feel safe. So many years has passed. She’s probably forgotten the whole incident, but I sure haven’t.
