My husband David is so warm hearted that he is concerned about and always helps the elders in our community.
Mr. Smith had been fishing with David for over 10 years and a friendship was established between them. Unluckily, Mrs Smith died three years ago. Mr. Smith felt lost and heartbroken. So David took Mr Smith fishing regularly. A few years later, as a result of a stroke (中风), Mr Smith lost his speech and even couldn't move his left side. He was put into a nursing home as no one would look after him at home. Unable to talk a walk, Mr Smith began to suffer from depression. David felt sorry for Mr Smith. Therefore, he tried to get permitted from the nursing home to take Mr. Smith out for a ride every a few days. Finally, he made it. But it was painful for Mr. Smith to get into David's truck. Seeing this, David was worried so much.
Actually David had bought his favorite truck just two years earlier. But he sold it so as to buy a van (厢式货车) which has enough room to be equipped with a wheelchair. With the newly bought one, Mr. Smith could go out more easily. Because of the van, they both enjoy their outing much more. Weak ties or strong ones, which are more important?
One way to think about any person’s social world is that you have an inner circle of people whom you often talk to and feel close, and an outer circle of people whom you see infrequently or just for a short time. Mark named these “strong ties” and “weak ties”.
Someone people knew may bring more opportunities.
Mark studied 282 Boston-based workers and found that most of them got their jobs through someone they knew.
Sandstrom, a senior lecturer in psychology, found that people with larger networks of weak ties tended to be happier in general, and that on days when a participant had a greater number of casual interactions(互动) with weak ties — a neighbour, a member of yoga class — they experienced more happiness.
When do weak-tie interactions happen?
A.Mark showed that quantity(数量) matters, too |
B.Only the people with strong ties can feel it |
C.Weak-tie interactions happen when we are out |
D.People get happiness from weak-tie relationships |
E.Mark even went to interview these people in person |
F.But only a minority got the job through a close friend |
G.He stressed weak ties are more important to us than strong ones |

Like Lisa, many of us experience loneliness. The truth is that all people, no matter what their age or character — even the most outgoing, wealthy and popular — experience loneliness at least sometimes. It’s healthy and natural to want to be around people who care. After all, we’ve all heard “No man is an island.” That’s true. We all need others in our lives.
Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, explains that if we want friends, we must be friendly and reach out to others. But it has risk. Because we are often afraid of rejection (拒绝), many of us are unwilling to reach out to others. We take a safer way and wait for others to make friends with us. But if we want friends, we’ve got to get beyond this.
If making friends is your goal as well, you need to consider taking some measures (措施).
Be willing to take the initiative (主动权). If you see someone whom you would like to know, don’t wait for her to make the first move. Get close to her and begin a conversation. Let her know in a non aggressive (无攻击性的) way that you are interested in being friends with her.
Reach out to those who are lonely. When you see someone at school sitting alone, go over and talk to her. And don’t let popularity decide whom you reach out to. You’ll often be surprised at the beautiful qualities behind a shy appearance.
Ask questions. Start your first conversation by asking this possible friend what she likes to do or asking about her family. Be sure to ask questions that cannot be replied with “yes” or “no”. For example, don’t ask “Do you have a dog?” Instead, say “So, tell me about your pets.” Avoiding asking “yes” or “no” questions makes your possible friend not end your communication with a one word answer.
1. Why does the author begin the text with Lisa’s worry?A.To set a sad tone. | B.To share Lisa’s pain. |
C.To introduce the topic. | D.To teach readers a lesson. |
A.Being refused by others. | B.Putting ourselves in danger. |
C.Being treated in a rude way. | D.Losing interest in communicating. |
A.Shy people are hard to talk to. | B.Popular people are often easy going. |
C.Just waiting for chances will waste our time. | D.A proper manner is important in making friends. |
A.It is considered unfriendly. | B.It will leave a bad first impression. |
C.It shows the poor quality of the speaker. | D.It isn’t good for keeping a conversation going. |

Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship where it left out and are delighted.
In the States, you can feel free to visit people' s homes , share their holidays, enjoy their lives without fear that you are taking on alasting obligation (负担). Do not hesitate to accept hospitality (热情款待) because you can't give it in return. No one will expect you to do so for they know you are, far from home. Americans will enjoy welcoming you and be pleased if you accept their hospitality easily.
Once you arrive there, the welcome will be full, warm and real. Most visitors find themselves readily invited into many homes there. In some countries it is considered inhospitable to entertain (招待) at home, offering what is felt as only home-cooked food, not “doing something for your guest". It is felt that restaurant entertaining shows more respect and welcome. Or for other different reasons, such as crowded space, language difficulties, or family custom, outsiders are not invited into homes.
In the United States, both methods are used, but it is often considered more friendly to invite a person to one's home than to go to a public place, except in purely business relationships. So, if your host or hostess_________, do not feel that you are being shown inferior ( 差的,低级的) treatment.
Don' t feel neglected ( 被轻视的 ) if you do not find flowers awaiting you in your hotel room, either. Flowers are very expensive there, hotel delivery is uncertain, arrival times are delayed, changed, or canceled ( 取消 ) —so flowers are not customarily sent as a welcoming touch. Please do not feel unwanted! Outward signs vary in different lands, the inward welcome is what matters, and this will be real.

In 1894 Einstein’s family moved to Milan but Einstein remained in Munich. In 1895 Einstein failed an examination that would have allowed him to study for a diploma as an electrical engineer at the Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule in Zurich. Einstein gave up German citizenship in 1896 and was to be stateless for a number of years. He didn’t even apply for Swiss citizenship until 1899, citizenship being granted in 1901.
By 1909, Einstein was recognized as a leading scientific thinker. He was appointed a full professor at the Karl-Ferdinand University in Prague in 1911. In fact, 1911 was a very significant year for Einstein since he was able to make predictions about how a ray of light from a distant star, passing near the Sun, would appear to be bent slightly, in the direction of the Sun. this would be high significant as it would lead to the first experimental evidence in favor of Einstein’s theory.
When British eclipse expeditions (日食探险队) in 1919 confirmed his predictions. Einstein was idolized (崇拜) by the popular press. The London Times ran the headline on 7 November 1919:
Revolution in science – new theory of the Universe – Newtonian ideas overthrown.
In 1920 Einstein’s lectures in Berlin were stopped by demonstrations which, although officially denied, were almost certainly anti-Jewish. Certainly there were strong feelings expressed against his works during this period which Einstein replied to in the press quoting Lorentz, Planck and Eddington as supporting his theories.
Einstein received the Nobel Prize in 1921 but not for reality rather for his 1905 work on the photoelectric effect. In fact he was not present in December 1922 to receive the prize being on a voyage to Japan. Around this time he made many international visits. He had visited Paris earlier in 1922 and during 1923 he visited Palestine. After making his last major scientific discovery on the association of waves with matter in 1924 he made further visits in 1925, this time to South America.
In 1949 Einstein became a citizen of the United States, but chose to retain his Swiss citizenship. He made many contributions to peace during his life. In 1944 he made a contribution to the war effort by hand writing his 1905 paper on special relativity and putting it up for auction (拍卖). It raised six million dollars, the manuscript today being in the Library of Congress.
By 1949 Einstein was unwell. A spell in hospital helped him recover but he began to prepare for death by drawing up his will in 1950. He left his scientific papers to the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, a university which he had raised funds for on his first visit to the USA, served as a governor of the university from 1925 to 1928 but he had turned down the offer of a post in 1922 as he was very critical of its administration.
One more major event was to take place in his life. After the death of the first president of Israel in 1952, the Israeli government decided to offer the post of the second president to Einstein. He refused but found the offer an embarrassment since it was hard for him to refuse without causing offence.
One week before his death Einstein signed his last letter. It was a letter to Bertrand Russell in which he agreed that his name should go on a manifesto urging all nations to give up nuclear weapons.

The Summer Palace is composed mostly of a lake, but it’s surrounded by beautiful greenery and a walkway that circles the lake. It is recommended that you give the Summer Palace about three hours. If you try to walk around it. It could take five or six hours. With that knowledge of it, I set off.
The highlight of the tour had to be the view from the Tower of Buddhist Incense. It sits on the top of a large hill overlooking the lake and is worth a climb. It was built as a place to worship Buddha. And in the Summer Palace, unlike in most of other places, photography isn’t allowed in most of the buildings. Most of the statues of Buddha and the other artifacts are off-limits to photos.
Another highlight was seeing the stage created for the Dowager Empress where she watched operas and other theater items. There are box seats that surround the stage and it is large. You could almost imagine royalty reviewing the actors from the boxes and the stage.
I do recommend taking a boat ride if you go, which takes you from one side of the lake to the other side where you can see another set of buildings. And it is fun. You can also rent an electric or paddle boat if you want. But since it was just me, I went on one of the biggest boats with other people.
I spent another four hours wandering around the Summer Palace. But I didn’t see all of it because it was getting dark. How I wish I could visit it again.
