Wood has many great characteristics that make it the perfect building material. It is cheap, durable, easily available, and most importantly, environmentally sustainable. The one thing it is not,is transparent! Now thanks to a team of scientists at Stockholm’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology the material may even be able to add that feature to its already impressive list.

Lead researcher Dr,Lars Berglund said he was inspired to create the transparent wood after learning how Japanese researchers had developed   a   see-through paper for use in flexible display screens for electronic devices. The team began by pulling out the wood’s lignin(木质素).The lignin-free wood was then dipped into a polymer(聚合物)and baked at a temperature of 158°F for four hours. The result was a hybrid product that was not only stronger and lighter than the original wood but also, almost transparent. The researchers were able to adjust the level of transparency by varying the amount of the polymer injected and also by changing the thickness of the wood.

While scientists have previously created a see-through wood for small-scale applications like computer chips, the transparent wood is the first one being considered for large scale applications. The researchers, who revealed their findings in Biomacromolecules on April 11,picture using the transparent wood in buildings to allow for more natural light,or to create windows that let in the desired amount of light without sacrificing privacy.

Wood that allows light to pass through could lead to a brighter future for homes and buildings.Berglund also thinks the wood could play a significant role in the design of solar panels. The semitransparent material would be able to keep light longer and give it more time to interact with the conductor, thus resulting in better solar efficiency.Additionally, substituting the currently used glass with this new product would help solar energy manufacturers improve their carbon footprint and lower the cost. They are now experimenting with ways to scale up the manufacturing process so that the transparent material is cost-effective to make and easy to use.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。介绍的是一种看起来与普通的便利袋相仿的新发明的包装材料,这种材料是由鱼废料和海藻制作而成的。

【推荐1】This new packaging material looks like conventional plastic, but it’s actually made from fish waste and algae(海藻)—unlike plastic, if it escapes into the ocean, a fish could eat it safely. The material, called MarinaTex, is the winner of this year’s James Dyson Award.

“It began with my desire to work with waste,” says Lucy Hughes, a recent graduate from University of Sussex, who once visited a fish processing factory to see the massive quantity of waste generated by the industry and found new ways to use it. She focused on fish skins and scales(鳞片). “When I had it in my hands, I realized this has got potential,” she says. “It s super strong and flexible.” Hughes spent months experimenting with fish waste in her kitchen, running more than 100 experiments to find a binder(粘合剂) and a process that could hold together the proteins in the fish skins and scales.“I had a lot of failed attempts. A lot of things either were too easily broken or too soft or easily went bad,” she says. She finally found a type of algae that can be locally got.

The material can be used to replace oil-based plastic in packaging such as bags or the half-transparent windows used to show products in boxes. As her research continues, Hughes says that she’ll be studying how MarinaTex works and how long it could be used to store food.

Unlike some “composable” plastics, which need to be processed in an industrial composting(堆肥) facility to break down, the new material can break down in four to six weeks in a backyard compost bin. “All the ingredients are food-grade safe,” Hughes says. “So, this breaks down much like a piece of food would break down.

1. Why did MarinaTex win this year s James Dyson Award?
A.It doesn’t go into the ocean.
B.It is environmentally-friendly.
C.It doesn’t produce any waste.
D.It doesn’t look like conventional plastic.
2. What is the main idea conveyed in paragraph 2?
A.Where Hughes got inspiration for the binder.
B.How Hughes developed MarinaTex.
C.What advantages MarinaTex has.
D.Where the binder can be used.
3. What is yet to be found out?
A.How long it takes for MarinaTex to break down.
B.How long MarinaTex can be used to store food.
C.Whether MarinaTex can replace oil-based plastic.
D.Whether MarinaTex is better than half-transparent windows.
4. Where is the text most likely to appear?
A.In a science fiction.B.In a government report.
C.In a science magazine.D.In a government announcement.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要讲述了一个创新计划——第八大洲,主要任务是清理海洋垃圾。

【推荐2】A large, self-sustaining, floating research lab, as big as an island, could be the next big project in ocean cleanup.

The 8th Continent, as it’s called, has won the Grand Prix Award for Architecture and Innovation of the Sea, and is designed to allow the operators to live, work, eat, sleep, and study full-time there. The 8th Continent is a water lily-like ocean station that’s tied to the bottom of the sea but designed to float in the ocean current.

The chief designer said, “It is shaped into a living organism that is fully self-sustainable and held to host some activities along with its chief mission of cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch covers a 900, 000-square-mile area, given a typical feature by high-density of plastic waste, and is being cleaned by large nets that use the ocean currents to help collect plastic waste.

“I look into marine species, animals and plants. And I study how they really interact with the water environment, how they can obtain energy and how they work with nutrition,” said Senior Designer Lenka Petrakova at Zaha Hadid Architects in London.

The three long legs of the station collect the passing plastic waste and tidal(潮汐的) energy to change them into electricity. Sitting on top are three research and education centers under three tall greenhouses including gardens and a water desalination(海水淡化) plant. There are the living and working areas, where collected waste is sorted and recycled, while the underwater draft spire(尖塔) will contain a viewing platform. At the moment, it’s a big dream, but the design is still charming and beautiful to see.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了海水可以用来给建筑物降温,这种想法可以帮助城市减少碳足迹,减缓气候变化。

【推荐3】Ocean water can be used to cool buildings. This idea could help cities reduce their carbon footprint and slow climate change. Although plentiful, ocean water is too salty to drink. But it could serve as an important and still largely untapped resource for many coastal cities. The idea came to Zi Zhang shortly after she moved from Michigan to Hong Kong a few years ago to get a PhD in engineering.

In 2013, Hong Kong built a system that used seawater to cool part of the city. The system pumps cold seawater into a plant with heat exchangers. The seawater absorbs heat to chill (冷却) pipes full of circulating water. That chilled water then flows into buildings to cool their rooms. This type of system tends to use far less energy than typical air conditioners. Zhang wondered: How much water and energy had this way saved Hong Kong? And why weren’t other coastal cities doing this? Zhang and her team set out for answers The group focused on Hong Kong and two other big coastal cities: Jeddah and Miami. The idea was to see what it might look like if all three adopted city-wide saltwater systems. The cities climates were quite different. But all three were densely populated, which should minimize some costs.

All three places would save lots of freshwater, the researchers found. Miami could save 16 percent of the freshwater it uses each year. Hong Kong, with more non-drinking-water needs, was saving up to 28 percent. Estimated energy savings ranged from just 3 percent in Jeddah to 11 percent in Miami. These savings came from the more efficient saltwater air conditioning. Also, the cities would need less energy to treat salty wastewater than they have been using to treat sewage now.

Though costly to build, saltwater-cooling systems could pay off in the long run for many cities. And because these systems use so much less electricity, they’re greener and emit (排放) less carbon-rich greenhouse gases. Scientists refer to this as a type of decarbonization (脱碳).
