Maybe it is true that we do not know what we have got until we lose it, but it is also true that we do not know what we have been missing until it arrives.

It takes an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone, but it takes a lifetime to forget someone.Giving someone all your love is never an assurance (保证)that they will love you back.Do not expect love in return; but if it does not, be content it has grown in yours.Do not rely on one’s appearance; it can trick you.Do not rely on wealth; even that fades away.Rely on someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright.

There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them.Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.

The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past. You cannot go on well in life until you let your past failures and heartaches go off.May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, and enough hope to make you happy. The happiest people do not necessarily have the best of everything;they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.Happiness waits for those who cry and those who appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives.Always put yourself in others’ shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts the others, too.

When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling.Live your life so that when you die,you are the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲的是作者头发开始掉了,却更明智了,不再像以前那样去沙龙理发,而是去当地的理发店花15英镑理发,作者认为这种改变太棒了。

【推荐1】I’m losing my hair. Don’t feel sorry. It will not be an explanation on how depressing it is that my body is submitting to the damages of time. It’s just a fact, and, honestly, I’m fine with it. Don’t get me wrong: had this happened when I was 25, I would have rushed to an Istanbul clinic with credit cards faster than you could say “Elton”. I would have had a baseball cap glued to my scalp (头皮). But I’m 40 now.

Hairdressers used to praise me on my “thick hair”, however, they’d make no obvious difference to my lion-like hairs. Therefore, this raises a question: why am I still spending £50 getting my hair cut? The answer to this is, I suppose, “habit”. But if the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that even our fundamental behaviors can be transformed when necessary. For decades, I’ve frequented salons (美发厅). I enjoyed the air conditioning and the coffee. But really, all I require these days is a short back and sides. So, for the first time, I’ve started going to my local barbershop. And… it’s great! For one thing, you don’t need to book an appointment.

The two guys are friendly, yet also business-like. Best of all, the cut costs £15, and my hair looks exactly the same as when it was done in the salon. The first time my barber placed a wet towel over my nose and mouth, I’ve come to appreciate the feeling of a freshly-shaved jaw. So yes, my hair is thinning: I am older. But also, I believe, wiser.

【推荐2】I had spent the 22 years following my childhood dream—becoming a professor of marine biology. However, in the graduate school I saw how applying for research funding is a constant source of worry for many professors, I decided I did not want to develop a career in research after all.

I began to attend career panels (咨询组), from which I expected to get some solid proposals. I walked into the room with other excited graduate students hopefully, Well-meaning as the panelists were, they fell silent when I brought up my puzzle. I felt totally lost.

I went to my professor for help eventually, After listening to my complaint , my professor told me that instead of focusing on finding a dream job, I should take account of what I am good at and what makes me happy at least 80% of the time. The practical advice surprised me at first, but it ended up being exactly what I needed to hear.

But I discovered that finding overlap (重叠) between what I enjoy and what I’m good at was not easy. I’m good at teaching but I don’t like repeating the same content every year.

To test the waters, I started a blog about the history of scientific discoveries. I found that I loved the freedom to choose what to write about, and I enjoyed the challenge. After 3 years of writing, I was offered a position as a science writer. It’s nothing like my childhood dream. But I am happy—more than 80% of the time.

【推荐3】Our interpersonal skills have a great effect on success in our daily lives. This appears not only in the workplace where we can make more money or enjoy our job more, but also shows itself in marriage, raising a family and the ability to reach goals in almost every area of life. Interpersonal skills come into play when our flight is cancelled and we need to make other arrangements. They come into play when a marriage is threatened by financial challenges or infidelity(不忠).
Our communication skills even matter when we are in traffic and we need to make a decision about how to respond to other drivers. Communicating with others becomes inseparable from having a good day, or a bad day not only in how we begin communication, but in how we react to the communications of others who are having a difficult time.
It can make a difference in saving a marriage or getting a divorce, celebrating a rise or getting fired, and even having your eggs cooked as the way you like at the local restaurant. Many wise men and women have stressed the importance of dealing with others in a skillful manner.
Getting feedback(反馈意见) from others can be of great value in improving our interpersonal communication skills. Often, however, others are not skilled at giving feedback. When we get negative results, they rarely include the details we need in order to improve our interpersonal skills.
Since life improves so much with greater communication skills, getting feedback and an opportunity to improve would be not only life-saving for pilots, but labor-saving for the rest of us.
