How to Make Small Talk

There's nothing small about small talk. Many great friendships and relationships have started with small talk. Small talk helps you build a meaningful relationship with a person.     1     If you want to know how to master small talk, just follow these steps.

2    If you want to make a person feel comfortable, the best thing to do is have an "open attitude" and direct your body toward that person without being too forceful. Just make eye contact, don't cross your arms, and face your shoulders toward that person. This will make the person feel like you're giving him all of your attention.

Put away your phone. There's nothing more annoying than talking to a person who is often checking his cellphone.

Though you should look eager(热切的)to talk to the person, don't look too eager. Don't lean so close that you may scare him away.     3

Give a friendly greeting. If you're seeing someone you already know, just say hello and greet her by her name,"Hi,Jen,it's good to see you."     4     If you don't know the person, introduce yourself first so you feel more confident and in control of the conversation.

5     Just a simple "I love your shoes-where did you get them?"can get you into a fun conversation about shoe shopping. Even if the praise doesn't lead anywhere,it will still make the person feel more appreciated before you start discussing other subjects.

A.Start with small praise.
B.Have friendly body language.
C.Focus your attention on their shoes.
D.Many people are annoyed by a close-talker.
E.It also benefits you in the professional world.
F.You will feel uncomfortable when close to others.
G.This is simple and direct and lets the person know you're excited to talk.

【推荐1】Maybe you live in places where English is not the main language. When you speak, your speech might be slower than you would like. This is because your mind is still translating things from your first language into English, which can also sound unnatural. English, like every other language, has its own sentence structure. The good news is that thinking in English can bring you a huge step closer to fluency! It is not very difficult, but it does take conscious effort and practice.

Think in single words

Charles Thomas has taught English to Union members, children and teenagers for over 10 years. He tells his students to name the things that they see around them, wherever they are. Start with nouns and then add in verbs, he suggests.

Think in sentences

For example, if you are sitting in a park, you can tell yourself things like,“It s such a beautiful day” and “People are playing sports with their friends.” Once this becomes easy, you can move on to more difficult sentences.

Think in conversation

This is a great way to practice what you might say in a real conversation. For example, let's say the imaginary person asks you a question like, “What did you think of the talk show last night?” How would you answer? Imagine the conversation and practice it in your head. You can do this out loud or in silence.

Practice it daily

“When you're doing it every day, over and over again, little by little, that's the key. Because when you make things a habit, it just pops up into your mind without thinking and then, before you know it, really, you're thinking in English,” Thomas says.

【推荐2】Making Ice Cream

In fact, making ice cream is so easy, you might soon leave plain vanilla (香精)behind and put into your own specialty flavors.

To make ice cream, you can of course use a churn-style (搅拌式)ice cream maker. Churns produce very creamy, delicious ice cream, but they take up a lot of space and can be time-consuming to use. Alternately, you can make smaller ice cream with less investment cost by using the plastic-bag method or the coffee-can method.     2

Follow the plastic-bag method by gathering the following ingredients. 1 pint-sized plastic, bag; ice cubes; 6 tablespoons of salt; 1 tablespoon sugar; 1/2 cup milk; 1/4 teaspoon vanilla,     3    To make more, try doubling the recipe.

The coffee-can method is very similar. But it uses a 1-pint coffee can nested inside a 3-pound coffee can. Whichever method you use. you can adjust the recipe, making it richer by adding eggs, or bits of candy or chocolate. A couple of tablespoons of chocolate syrup (糖浆) will give you chocolate ice cream.     5

A.Remove the small bag, open it carefully, and enjoy it.
B.And it's much better if that ice cream is home made.

【推荐3】How to Improve Your English Writing

Whether you are learning English as a second language or you are a native speaker, improving your English composition skills is very important. Knowing your shortcomings and practicing will allow you to write an article that is at first grammatically correct, and eventually sparkling. To do this you'll need to read more, ask friends for help, and continually write. Practice does indeed make perfect.

Ask a friend with good English skills to check your writing.     2     Rewrite your paper or letter after listening to his or her advice, making the necessary changes and correcting the paper or letter.

Use your word processing software to fix simple errors. Whenever you misspell a word, replace it with the correct suggestion and then look at it carefully.     3     Most modern Web browsers also include spell-checking tools. Use them.

Think in English while writing if you' re a native speaker of a different language. Study English grammar if you are having difficulties.   Look up the rules whenever you' re having difficulties.     4

Practice writing!     5     Every skill requires regular repetition to achieve mastery, whether playing a musical instrument, flying a jet or writing good English articles.
