"At night, when I can't sleep, I can use my phone for up to five hours," she said, noting she checks her phone countless times from morning until night. She even checks it while in class.
Tyas goes to the University of Indonesia, where a team of students recently developed a device meant to fight phone addiction. The students spent three months creating the device, which can help internet users like Tyas diminish time they spend looking at their phones.
Inventor Irfan Budi Satria led the development team. The device is called “Nettox", which combines the words “internet" and "detox (排毒)". Users wear it on their arm. The device has a sensor that measures hemoglobin (红蛋白) oxygen levels and changes to the heart rate called HRV. Studies have found that using a mobile phone for long hours can lower HRV levels. The Nettox device makes a sound when HRV and blood oxygen levels fall, which reminds wearers to stop using their phones.
For people between the ages of 18 and 25, the HRV should stay above 60. At a recent trial, Tyas' HRV reading was 44.
Internet addiction is a growing social issue in Indonesia. In October, two teenagers were treated for their addiction to internet gaming, media reported.
Irfan Budi Satria's team is working to improve Nettox's accuracy. HRV readings can change depending on whether the user is a man or woman, and what their body shape and health conditions are.
The team aims to get a patent for their invention with the university by next year. Irfan says Nettox is for people already trying to change their behavior. "Our goal is to help people who want to free themselves from internet addiction," he said.

He revolutionized the industry, working as a consultant for more than 200 companies and creating designs for everything from packaging to refrigerators, from cars to the interiors of spacecraft.
Loewy's design all had one thing in common. They were shaped by the MAYA principle - Most Advanced Yet Acceptable. His idea was that people will not accept solutions to design problems if the solutions are too different from current designs.
After a short period as a fashion illustrator, Loewy started his career in industrial design in 1929 by re-designing a copying machine for the British manufacturer, Sigmund Gestetner. The 28-years-old designer completed the task in three days and the design of the machine lasted for the next 40 years.
The Gestetner duplicator was the beginning of many design which used streamlining. He described this as 'beauty through function and simplification'. He spent the next 50 years streamlining everything from postage stamps and company logos to the interiors of stores. The famous Greyhound bus and Studebaker car show his use of streamlining in action.
He is perhaps most famous for his re-design of the Lucky Strike packaging. In 1940 , the President of the Lucky Strike Manufacturing Company, Goerge Washington Hill, be Loewy $50,000 that he could not improve the appereance of the green and red Lucky Strike . Loewy accepted the challenge. He changed the background of the packet from green to white. Then he put the red lucky strike target on both sides of the packet. This made it more eye-catching and greatly increased sales. It is now recognised as a design classic.
Loewy's logo design aimed at 'Visual retention'. He wanted to make sure that anyone who saw the logo, even for a short while, would never forget it. He designed many highly visible logos for famous companies such as Shell Oil , Exxon, Greyhound and Nabisco.
By the mid 20th century, his industrial design firm was so famous that he could say 'the average person, leadinga normal life lose is bound to be in daily contact with some of the things, service or structure' designed by his firm.

It does not need any energy source but sunlight,” said Forró. “Thus our device can supply clean drinking water even at remote places.” The small, adaptable flat-bodied device was designed at Switzerland’s EPFL research institute, by a team led by Prof. Laszl6 Forró.
Water enters via a tube (管子) in the top, flows through a multilayer composite (复合的) material sandwiched between two sheets of glass, and exits through a tube in the bottom. The composite material is made up of titanium dioxide nanowires (TDN,二氧化钛纳米线) interwoven with carbon nanotubes. When the filter is exposed to sunlight, the UV light (紫外线) causes the composite to produce a group of molecules (分子) known as reactive oxygen species. These molecules are highly effective at killing harmful bacteria and viruses. Its potential challenge when working outdoors is rainy or cloudy days.
The filter has already been successfully tested on water containing E. coli bacteria, with results indicating that it should also have no problem ridding of other harmful bacteria. In fact, it is believed that the technology may also prove effective at ridding of micro-pollutants such as pesticides (杀虫剂) and drug remains. It should be noted that when activated by UV light, titanium dioxide nanowires on their own are capable of killing harmful viruses and bacteria. For that matter, even UV light alone can purify water, if the water is left sitting in the sunlight in a transparent container.
However, Prof. Forró told us that his team’s filter is much more effective — this is due in part to the carbon nanotubes’ ability to absorb heat from the sunlight, making the purification process faster. The present small-scale model can treat 2 liters (0.5 gal) of water per day, although that figure would rise considerably if the technology were to be scaled up.
1. Why can the new filter work at remote areas?A.It is small and flat-shaped. |

One day I went up to Michael and asked him, “I don’t understand it. You can’t be positive all the time. How do you do it?”
Michael replied, “Each morning I wake up and say to myself, ‘Mike, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or choose to be in a bad mood.’ I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Life is all about choices. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. The bottom line is: It’s your choice how you live life.”
Soon, I left the big company that I had worked in for years to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life.
Several years later, I heard Michael had a serious accident, falling off 60 feet from a tower. After l8 hours of operation and weeks of intensive care, Michael was released from the hospital. I saw Michael about six months after the accident. When I asked him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place.
“The first thing that went through my mind was the well being of my soon-to-born daughter,” Michael replied. “Then, lying on the ground, I remembered I had two choices: I could choose to live or I could choose to die. I chose to live.”
“Weren’t you afraid?” I asked.
Michael smiled, “The doctors and nurses kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the operation room and I saw the expressions on their faces, I got really scared. In their eyes, l read ‘He’s a dead man.’ I knew I needed to take action.”
“What did you do?” I asked.
“Well, there was a nurse shouting questions at me,” said Michael. “She asked me if I was allergic(过敏) to anything. ‘Yes,’ I said. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, ‘Gravity(重力)!’ Over their laughter, I told them, ‘I’m choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead’.”
Michael lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude.

Most kids have been teased by a brother or a friend at some point. And it’s not usually harmful when done in a playful and friendly way, and both kids find it funny. But when teasing becomes hurtful, unkind, and constant, it crosses the line into bullying and needs to stop.
Bullying is intentional tormenting(折磨)in physical or psychological ways. It can range from hitting, name-calling, threats, and mocking (嘲弄) to blackmailing money and possessions. Some kids bully others by deliberately separating them and spreading rumors about them. Others use social media or electronic messaging to tease others or hurt their feelings.
It’s important to take bullying seriously and not just brush it off as something that kids have to tolerate. The effects can be serious and affect kids’ sense of safety and self-worth. In severe cases, bullying has contributed to tragedies, such as suicides and school shootings.
Kids bully for a variety of reasons. Sometimes they pick on kids because they need a victim—someone who seems emotionally or physically weaker, or just acts or appears different in some way—to feel more important, popular, or in control. Although some bullies are bigger or stronger than their victims, that’s not always the case.
Sometimes kids torment others because that’s the way they’ve been treated. They may think their behavior is normal because they come from families or other settings where everyone regularly gets angry and shouts or calls each other names. Some popular TV shows even seem to promote meanness—people are “voted off”, ignored, or ridiculed for their appearance or lack of talent.
Unless your child tells you about bullying—or has visible injuries—it can be difficult to figure out if it’s happening.

But, amazingly, he has reached the age of 73. Even mere survival would have been a medical miracle, but of course, he didn’t merely survive. He has become arguably the most famous scientist in the world for his brilliant research, for his bestselling books, and, above all, for his astonishing victory over hardship.
Stephen received his “death sentence” in 1964, when I thought it was hard for him to go on with his study. Stephen went from Albans School to Oxford University. He was said to be a “lazy” undergraduate, but his brilliance earned him a first-class degree, an “entry ticket” to a research career in Cambridge and a uniquely inspiring achievement.
Within a few years of the burst of his disease he was wheelchair-bound, and his speech was so unclear that it could only be understood by those who knew him well. But his scientific career went from strength to strength: he quickly came up with a series of insights into the nature of black holes (then a very new idea) and how the universe began. In 1974 he was elected to the Royal Society at the exceptionally early age of 32.
The great advances in science generally involve discovering a link between phenomena that were previously conceptually unconnected — for instance, Isaac Newton realized that the force making an apple fall to earth was the same as the force that holds the moon and planets in their orbits. Stephen’s revolutionary idea about a link between gravity and quantum(量子) theory has still not been tested. However, it has been hugely influential; indeed, one of the main achievements of string theory(弦理论)has been to confirm and build on his idea. He has undoubtedly done more than anyone else since Einstein to improve our knowledge of gravity and he is one of the top-ten living theoretical physicists.
