The group meet on Thursday afternoons from 15:00 to 16:30 at the clubhouse. The first half of the class is devoted to reading out loud from the book Easy French Reader by R. de Roussy de Sales, and working on proper pronunciation and phrasing. During the second half, we listen to recordings.

We meet every Tuesday at the IWC clubhouse from 9:30 to 11:00 with 6-8 members out of a total of 10. Most of our time is devoted to very lively discussions on big events.

As an upperclassman, she would be assigned a “freshman(新生) friend”. Her duties would include helping her friend get used to high school life by offering friendship. Latrice thought it was important to have someone with whom to talk and share concerns. She knew that the friendship program was likely to make the freshman year of high school a positive experience. On August 2nd Latrice received a notice in the mail about the schedule of events for the freshman orientation (适应指导).

【推荐2】Reyes Clark， the owner of Yemaya a pop-up business， is part of a movement in El Salvador， composed of young chefs who are making traditional foods into contemporary cuisine．

"We used to go to McDonald's and Pizza Hut a lot when we were kids． We thought it was cool，" she says． "Anything from the U．S． was considered better than here． But attitudes about American fast food are changing． Salvadorans are becoming more curious about ancestral vegetables and herbs．"

Reyes Clark picks up a piece of paterna， a large seedy green pod （豆荚） that grows all over the country． "I'm going to make hummus （豆沙） out of the seeds，" she says． "The first time I made it for my friends， they thought I was crazy， but then when they tasted it， they were surprised by how good it was．"

Paterna， along with leafy green nutritional powerhouses - mora， chipilin and chaya - grow easily in the wild， but over the years they have been replaced with processed foods． You are not going to find paterna in the supermarket， Reyes Clark says．

"This is because most of El Salvador's food culture was wiped out，" says Luis May， a doctor who focuses on locally sourced food as medicine． He has a garden behind his office where he grows many local plants and teaches his visitors about their nutritional value． He says， "Nearly 500 years ago， the Spanish rulers abolished many local foods．"

Mirandal is a chefs at a newly opened restaurant Boca Boca， hidden in a tree-lined area of San Salvador， where they focus on what they call food nostalgia （乡愁）． "We take old plants from the farming areas and combine them in new ways． The taste is new and exciting for our generation， and brings back a flood of good memories for the older people，" Mirandal says．

Mirandal's 68-year-old grandmother， Elva Duran， is thrilled to see these foods making a comeback． " When I was young， we didn't have fast-food chains that have no health value，" she says． "I think it's incredible that this generation is taking steps to keep our roots alive．"

【推荐3】We are what we eat. From high-calorie meals to low-fat lunches, much of our health depends on what we eat. We know about the benefits of eating properly for our physical well-being, but cooking food is turning out to be good for our mental well-being as well.

Some people are now thinking highly of the treatment value of cooking food. It’s not just about the end result but the experience someone goes through. Dr. Mark Salter, a famous doctor, said, “Baking and cooking are good therapies (疗法) that help patients develop planning skills, short-term memory and social skills-all of which suffer in mental illness.”

TV chef and author Nadiya Hussain agrees that cooking is great for helping our mind. She loves to bake and became the champion of the TV show, The Great British Bake Off. She says that “Baking’s always been about therapy. It produces something tangible. Unlike something abstract (抽象的), you can touch and enjoy it! Besides, your creations taste delicious and make you feel good. It is a process that really increase your level of life satisfaction.

Certainly, creating some delicious food has helped some of us get through the recent lockdown (禁闭); it’s helped take our mind off things and given us something to do. People have said that kneading dough (面团) to make bread, for example, has given them a sense of calm and control. Research has shown that doing creative tasks, like cooking, makes us feel happier.

Nicole Farmer, who studies how food influences our biology, behavior and mental health, said that baking is an important tool for our socialization and mental health. She thinks that cooking gives you the opportunity to cook for others-in turn, providing the opportunity to improve and build relationships. It is a rewarding experience.

Hopefully, as we start to mix with friends and family again, we can enjoy the benefits once more and put us all in the right state of mind.

【推荐2】A Schengen visa is a short-stay visa awarded to persons wishing to travel to one or many of the countries that make of the 26 European country Schengen Area. It grants (授予) each holder entry to all the countries in the area on a single visa. Several new Schengen visa application rules came into force in all countries on February 2, 2020. Check out some of the major changes:

Increased visa fees

The Schengen visa fee has increased from 60 euros to 80 for adults, while children aged between 6 and 12 now need to pay 40 euros instead of 35.

The rise in fees is to increase staff numbers, ensure stronger security screenings, and upgrade IT equipment and software, according to the European Commission.

Electronic application form

The application process has been greatly simplified. Schengen member   states now accept electronic applications, and the application form can be signed and submitted electronically.

Longer application submission periods

Schengen visa applicants used to apply as early as three months ahead of their trip. Today applications can be submitted up to six months in advance.

Benefits for frequent travelers

Those who have previously visited the Schengen Area and have a positive visa history will be granted the opportunity to get a multiple-entry visa valid for up to five years. That is, people who have lawfully used their previous visas, have a good economic standing in their home countries, and intend to leave the area before their Schengen visa expires (过期) will now have the chance to get a visa for up to five years with multiple entries.

【推荐3】Archaeologists(考古学家)have discovered at least 58 shipwrecks(沉船)filled with ancient objects near the islands of Fournoi in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey. The discovery is believed to be the largest collection of shipwrecks ever found in the Mediterranean. They gathered there over a long time period, from time of ancient Greece to the 20th century. But most of the ships are from the time of the Greek, Roman and Byzantine civilizations.

Peter Campbell is leading the underwater research of the wrecks for the RPM Nautical Foundation, a group that studies ancient objects. He said, "The excitement is difficult to describe. I mean, it was just unbelievable. We knew that we had come across something that was going to change the history books. "

The international team began the underwater study in 2015. They found 22 shipwrecks that year. That number has climbed to 58 with the latest discovery. The team believes there are even more secrets lying on the seabed below.

Campbell called it "one of the top archaeological discoveries of the century". He told Reuters, "We now have a new story to tell of a trading road that connected the ancient Mediterranean. "

The wrecks and their contents show ships carrying goods from nearby areas like the Black Sea, Greece, Turkey, Armenia and Italy. Other goods come from places farther away such as Spain, Sicily, Cyprus, Egypt, the Middle East and North Africa.

The team has raised more than 300 ancient objects from the shipwrecks, including many tall jars(广口瓶)with two ears used by ancient Greek and Roman people to carry liquid.

Campbell said, "Those jars are used mainly for transporting liquids and semi-liquids in the past, so the goods it would be transporting were mostly wine, oil, fish sauces, perhaps honey." He added that fish sauce from the Black Sea area was rare and precious in ancient times.
