“I think I’m nothing more than a dead fish.” “I don’t want to do anything.” “I’m so beat and so sad.”…The young generation in our country used to enjoy their “happy culture” but now they have become “beat and sad” slowly and secretly. Some people even called it “the beat culture”. The “Beat” youths don’t want to do anything. They have no purpose, no desire and they are totally depressed so that they only want to live an aimless life. The “Ge You slouch (葛优瘫)” and the song I feel like having been drained are the examples.

Many media concern themselves about this phenomenon and try to persuade the youths into embracing positive and healthy feelings and encourage them to work hard to get rid of decadence. This is really a kind gesture. However, we don’t have to worry too much about this “beat culture.” In fact, it’s not a negative thing. “Beat” never means despair, but a way of self-mockery(自嘲)and pressure relief.

In general, the youths in China are not “beat”. According to a recent international research, the youths in China hold positive attitude towards the future. 29% of the Chinese interviewees believe they will live and work in peace in China because “as long as you work hard, you can have your own day”. Around 93% of the Chinese interviewees believe the future is promising because of medicine industry, renewable energy sources and computer. Compared with Chinese youngsters, youths in developed countries are more pessimistic (悲观的).

Of course there are some social reasons for the appearing of “the Beat Culture”. As urbanization develops rapidly, youths living in big cities are facing new challenges that their forefathers have never met before. Loneliness and feelings of insignificance and powerlessness are easy to get hold of the young people. Without proper care, they could threaten our mentality and cause many social problems. These problems probably need our attention more.

【推荐1】Singapore uses about two billion liters of water every day-a number it expects could double in the next four decades.

That kind of consumption is adding pressure to the Asian city state to address growing concerns about global water shortage. So it's building new technology to prepare itself for a future where obtaining clean water will be even more difficult. "Singapore truly has become a global water center,"said Shane Snyder, executive director of the Nanyang Environment & Water Research Institute at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University. “But as it stands, it imports approximately 40% of its water today. And with climate change, that water has become far less dependable.”

Singapore, meanwhile, is home to more than five million people and is covered in fountains, reservoirs and other water features-including the world's tallest indoor waterfall, The Rain Vortex that pumps about 45,000 liters of water per minute. But it has no natural water sources of its own, instead relying heavily on recycled water and imports from its neighbors.

Snyder's research facility is one of several places developing solutions for Singapore's water dependency. The hope is to create projects that could be used across the city. "What we have become used to as reliable water may quickly change-so we have to be prepared, and we have to be thinking about the basic facilities in advance. " Snyder said. " There's a big drive to become water independent-to control our own future -and that is largely dependent on the technologies we're developing. "

Another company,Wateroam, is already taking innovation from Singapore to the rest of the region. Founded in 2014,Wateroam says it has developed a lightweight, portable filtration(过滤)device that has already provided clean drinking water to more than 75,000 people across Southeast Asia. Wateroam CEO David Pong said one of the most innovative aspects of the product is its simplicity. The water filtration device is no bigger than a bicycle pump, yet it can provide clean water to villages of 100 people for up to two years.

"We've been very blessed to have access to clean drinking water," Pong said. It's necessary to bring the privilege to the rest of the region, and advocate that clean water is an essential aspect for life on Earth, according to him.

The wooden currency (货币) is good only in the small city of Tenino. It is part of an effort to help residents and local merchants get through the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. Decades after it created a similar program during the Great Depression, the city is again giving people in need up to $300 per month in wooden currency to spend.

Nearly every business in town is accepting the wooden money. The currency is made of maple wood and printed on the same 1890s-era press that once printed the Depression currency and the local newspaper.

Businesses in town can exchange the wooden money for real dollars at City Hall or sell them on the side. Some merchants said they had been offered three times the face value from coin collectors around the country.

“The city could have given out debit cards (借记卡) or cash, but we don’t know where that money was going,” said Tyler, former president of the local department of commerce. “This is how we could keep the money here in the community.”

Nowadays there are no hotels and the quiet downtown is just a row of shops. “We’re a small community that relies on a lot of tourism during the summer,” said Mayor Fournier, who decided to use the wooden currency again. “Now everything’s been shut down. Our businesses, restaurants and antique stores do not have the traffic. There’s no assistance available. We are on our own.”

3】Latin is a language no longer spoken by people in their daily routine life, but many Latin words are still widely used in our writings. For example, “in loco parentis” is a Latin term meaning “in the place of a parent”. It describes when someone else accepts responsibility to act in the interests of a child. This idea developed long ago in British common law to define the responsibility of teachers towards their students. For years, American courts supported in loco parentis in cases such as Gott vs Berea College in 1913.

Gott owned a restaurant off campus. Berea threatened to dismiss students who ate at places not owned by the school. The Kentucky high court decided that in loco parentis justified that rule. In loco parentis meant that male and female college students usually had to live in separate buildings. Women had to be back at their dorms by ten or eleven on school nights.

But in the 1960s, students began to protest rules and restrictions like these. At the same time, courts began to support students who were being punished for being politically and socially different.

Students were not considered adults until 21. Then, in 1971, the 26th Amendment to the Constitution (宪法修正案) set the voting age at 18. So in loco parentis no longer really applied. Slowly, colleges began to treat students not as children, but as adults. Students came to be seen as consumers of educational services.

Gary Dickstein, an assistant vice president at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, says in loco parentis is not really gone. It just looks different. Today’s parents, he says, are often heavily involved in students’ lives. They are known as “helicopter parents”; they always seem to stay above their children. Gary Dickstein says these parents are very likely to question decisions, especially about safety issues and grades. They want to make sure their financial investment is not being wasted.

As a result, in loco parentis has been replaced by what some administrators call a partnership between the school and the family. As a matter of fact, the orientation programme for new students at Virginia Tech this summer includes a meeting for parents called “Parents as Partners”.

1. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.From Substitute Parents to Partners
B.All-round Teachers
C.Educational Administration vs Partnership
D.Smart Consumers
2. “In loco parentis” is a term originally used to ________.
A.set a limit to teachers’ responsibilities
B.describe the responsibility for kids
C.shift the responsibility from parents to teachers
D.give more responsibility to teachers
3. The Gott vs Berea College case is used to ________.
A.prove that students should observe the dorm regulations
B.display parents’ loss of power in taking care of students
C.explain the adults’ authority in the interests of students
D.show the high court in Kentucky could commit serious mistakes
4. Overprotective parents could be described as “________”.
A.loco parentisB.parents as partners
